bikeguychicago
On the box for the Flashback Portable it reads: "Some SD Cards might not be compatible due to SD card conditions or original specifications of downloaded games via SD card" Can someone explain what this means or what, specifically, is required for the SD card? Thanks!
+save2600
Stick with popular name brands bought at retail (you know about the cheap Chinese rip-off scams, right?) and keep it 8gb or smaller would be my guess. Here's another link talking about memory card scams. I've been duped by a couple of these throughout the years. http://www.instructables.com/id/Dont-fall-for-the-Flash-Drive-Scam!/
bikeguychicago
I have a Lexar 8GB Class 10 300x (45MB/s) one that I had used with my other FB Portable (the one where it stopped reading the SD card). I just wanted to make sure that what I have isn't one of the "not be compatible due to SD card conditions" ones to prevent me from having to return another unit. bikeguychicago
I was also experiencing issues with the Lexar card on my present AFP a decided to try an older 2GB Sandish card I have. That one seem much more stable so far. Maybe the FB doesn't like the newer, high-speed cards as much?
tjlazer
Stay with brand name 8GB or less and use the SDFormatter tool!
Flojomojo
Anything 16GB or higher is likely to be the faster, less compatible (with this toy) specifications. I'm not conversant with all the class 10 or SDHC specs, but I think the "keep it name brand, keep it small, old is probably best" approach seems most likely to work. Retro-Z
This seemed to be my experience as well. The fast cards (Class 10) seem to have issues (even with the name brand). Interesting. I've been using a SanDisk Ultra 8GB Class 10 Micro SDHC card in my AFP and it has been working flawlessly.
BillLoguidice
I honestly don't think it has much to do with the type of SD card (outside of perhaps the aforementioned Class 10 ones). We have successful reports from 32MB to 16GB, and all kinds of brands (and even adapted microSD cards). I'm sure there are some that don't work for whatever reason, but it's not really something you should have to sweat, particularly if you follow the formatting recommendations (as needed) in the other thread (EDIT: and in an earlier comment here). The 8GB Sandisk is what I've been using, and Amazon presently has a two pack for $11.31 with free Prime shipping (it's often a bit cheaper than that): http://amzn.to/2hr0RYu There's also a single 16GB version for $5.49 with free Prime shipping, but I don't know if it will work (only 8GB is officially supported, but again, people have reported success with 16Gb): http://amzn.to/2htaZAv Side note, it's crazy how inexpensive these things have become, right? I remember it used to be such a big deal to have cards of this size. Now I (and I'm sure many others) have bags full of the things (in fact, often-times much bigger in size, like 32GB and 64GB). +Intellivision Master
Which SD card has the best compatibility for the Atari Flashback 2600 Portable? I've seen different answers but I just need to know so I don't buy the wrong type. Thanks!

I recommend the 8GB Sandisk in my comment, but, as others have stated, you shouldn't go wrong with any name brand between 2GB - 8GB.
+Intellivision Master
Thank you for letting me know which SD card is the best to use.
Tanooki
Thanks for the memory card link, that 8GB x2 package is by far the best deal. I recall seeing recently a 4GB x2 package, can't seem to locate it on ebay so maybe it was elsewhere, doubtful it was that cheap either. I just ordered the handheld from toys r us as it's cheap and free shipping, then did this on amazon. I'm set whenever they both arrive. tremoloman2006
EDIT: I coped the files into a folder called "GAME" and it is now working for me
Gregory DG
Hm... What format does the card need to be? FAT? FAT32? NTFS? I have a 2gig Kingston and it won't read it. Unbelievable.
+DrVenkman
Use this tool to format your card: https://members.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ (It's the official SD Card Association's tool, and more likely to format the card correctly as compared to the built-in utilities for Windows and OS X). Put your games in a folder in the root directory called 'Game' I'm using an ancient bare-bones 1 GB Sandisk card I had lying around the house and it's working great. Guitari
I'm interested to know more about the speed class. For devices such as digital cameras I always go with the highest class I can find. Does anyone have any experiences with a range of classes though, on the FB portable? Many thanks.
Retro-Z
I've used up to a Class 10 Sandisk Ultra microSDHC card with success. The AFP did load from it noticeably faster, as the "LOADING" indicator typically popped up for just an instant compared to the Class 4 card I'm currently using (the Class 10 card was borrowed from a Raspberry Pi set I hadn't set up yet). Wal-Mart sells a twin-pack of Sandisk Class 4 SDHC cards for about $8 that works very well with the AFB. One approach is to fill one card with ALL of the ROMs available, and the second card with just the "favorites". I'd recommend this option if someone doesn't have a bunch of older SD cards sitting around, as it's much easier than hunting down a sub-8GB card that MAY work. Sure, the 8GB size is overkill, but the cards are still very cheap and I have found them to work flawlessly when properly formatted.
Deteacher
I got my AFP this evening and I dug up a 1Gb Memorex SD Card. I loaded up some games on it and it worked. But then I took it out (after powering it off) and I tried loading a few more games on it and it stopped reading the card. I tried formatting it in Windows 10 with FAT and FAT32...no dice. Then I downloaded the SD Formatting tool listed above and the card was readable, once again. So, for those having trouble getting their AFP to read their cards, use the tool from post #16. Seems to have brought my card back to life.
Guitari
Got my AFB arriving later today. I'm going to go for 8gb class 10. I should be able to feedback in a few days..
Hyperboy
I use a Class 4 2gb SanDisk Micro SD and it works perfectly. Sent from my non beer holding hand.
coachbrj
My Lexar Platinum II 8GB SDHC worked just fine for a while. Then it stopped working and I re-formatted it with the above mentioned tool and now it works just fine again. My question is, what games you guys are getting to work? I have downloaded all the roms and renamed them according to the guidelines and some show up and work but some are still not showing up. coachbrj
And, as a follow up, is anyone going to mod an Atari Flashback 7 Classic Game Console to accept an SD card?
