Resident Evil 7

So after playing the final update of the PS4 demo and reading really positive first impressions of the first five or so hours of the game, I'm feeling very comfortable preordering the game. At first I was under the impression it will be just an Outlast clone mixed with some Alien: Isolation. Then I played the demo and read that preview and my worries vanished. As much as I loved Alien: Isolation, I wasn't a fan of the instant death when the alien grabbed you. Even if it was pretty true to the franchise. It's different in RE7, at least with the father. I won't post it to prevent any spoiling of the gameplay, but I'll say it's something I wish the alien did in Alien: Isolation.

The first RE is still my favorite of the series because like Silent Hill, you had no idea what the heck was going to happen next. It feels like they brought the mystery back and the risk and reward of exploring. This and Dead Rising 4 might be the only games I buy next year. Has anyone else played through the PS4 demo? And is anyone else thinking about getting it when it comes out?

So the demo for PC and Xbox One has been out for awhile, has anyone played through it? I read a spoiler free review by a guy that received it early on PS4 and he gave it a 8.9/10 and he played it with the VR headset. It's pretty scary and almost like a soft reboot. He said it's best to go in without knowing anything, so I've been avoiding a lot of sites because of spoilers. The game length sounds just right and the nightmare difficulty sounds cool as it rearranges key items like in the director's cut.

I should get my copy Tuesday but anyone on the fence can check out people's impressions which seem good so far. I'll know for sure Tuesday if it was worth preordering, but I have a good feeling so far.

I played the PS4 demo on PSVR and will definitely be picking it up. It's been a while since I played an RE game but this feels a lot more like the good Silent Hill games than what I think of as RE (which has always been kinda campy, at least to me).

Encouraging to hear that someone who played it all the way through on VR gave it an 8.9. I'm definitely looking forward to it. If it's short (which is what people usually mean when they say it's "just the right length"), that's ok too, because especially on VR, I feel like I'm going to need a break at least every couple hours. The demo was about as long as I could play without needing to come back to actual reality for my own sanity's sake.

The right length to me is long as well. Games that are long aren't obviously made to be played in one sitting. That's what annoyed me with some reviews of Alien Isolation. They were trying to rush through it to just write a review, as in work.

I've heard people rush through it as short as 8 hours but averages around 12-15 hours. Video tapes will also add to the length eventually as well. I think they're a simple yet clever idea that allows them to experiment with different ideas. Playing as a character that is meant to die in a tape is creepy. It would be great if they expand upon this idea for the sequel and have all the "tapes" connected.

I'm pretty bummed I don't have a VR headset, but this looks like it would be worth it. I ordered two licensed candles that are supposed to smell like the house. I'd imagine it would be a terrifying experience with the headset. Man, if only those headsets were cheaper and worked on PC.

I haven't played the demos, but I've watched some videos of the demos being played. It definitely looks interesting, and I will eventually but it. But I don't have enough interest to pre-order it. I will buy ti when it's under $30.

I hadn't heard about the licensed candles. That's a pretty interesting idea.

I'm only an hour or so in, but I feel like I've experienced a lot. Man, they hit you hard with with some major effed up moments in the first half hour. My mouth was open like a moron at what I was seeing. So far it feels like what RE4 did to the series, but went to the horror direction over action. It's a lot like Alien Isolation, but WAY more forgiving. When you're spotted you're not automatically dead unless it's a special objective. Even then there are generous checkpoints plus manual saves. I couldn't imagine the scare factor playing this in VR. If you haven't gathered, it definitely has a Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe to it.

Slightly off topic, rumor has it that there will be a RE2 Remake demo sometime soon. I wonder if it will be fixed camera or more updated.

I am very much looking forward to this. As far as the camera angles go, I actually feel that the fixed angle adds to the suspense because it prevents you from seeing certain areas, especially around corners. I know that the camera angles had a lot to do with the system limitations at the time, but just because they can make a more updated game with a modern camera, it doesn't mean that they absolutely should.

Yep, I agree and that worked well with the Mr. X encounters and the surprise Nemesis ones in the third game. If they don't pre-render the backgrounds they could allow players to pick between a fixed camera angles or a more traditional one, which would be great.

I'm a few more hours in and the suspense doesn't let up. I had a boss battle with one of the family members that was very intense. I won't spoil it, but it involved a chainsaw. The boss battles so far are like puzzles in which you don't use your guns against them. You basically play along until the opportunity presents itself to you on how to defeat them. Some may not like that, but I do. It means your traditional weapons are for standard enemies. This way you're not screwed if you're low on ammo, and the developers won't spoil a boss encounter by giving you a ton of ammo before the fight.

Ammo is fairly scarce once again. The most I ever had so far for the handgun is like 36. Standard enemies take around three shots to the head to take down, and it's very easy to miss. So it's pretty easy to deplete your supply. The father will go down temporarily with headshots if you want to explore an area without being chased, but you can always go back when he's not in the area to save ammo.

So far I think this is easily the scariest Resident Evil game. It doesn't rely on jump scares either, something that worried me originally. It's all about the atmosphere, tension, and just the unknown. The less you know going in the better, just like the original.

That's good to hear. I've always considered jump scares to be a cheap way to make things scary. It requires real effort to make something scary with atmosphere and tension. I will be looking forward to this game.

I heard Resident Evil 7 is a first-person shooting game. Can anyone verify if this is the truth? I was hoping for it to be third-person shooting since I have been playing all Resident Evil titles in third-person mode. Other than that, it looks really intense and realistic.

Do you mean if there's a lot of shooting? There is combat, but it doesn't play like a FPS. It's like a more refined Alien Isolation. The latest boss fight I actually had to use a weapon to defeat them. They do give you enough ammo though were it takes place. So not all boss fights are puzzle based. They threw in some FEAR/Silent Hill 3 moments too that were very scarey and the music made the experience even more nerve wracking.

Do you have a link where you ordered those?

I ordered from the Merchoid website, they're based in the UK but will ship to the US. They're currently sold though. They had a small run, but they might make more or there's always eBay.

I was skeptical about RE7 (RE4forlife), but I gave it a shot as my friend bought it on PC.

... I regret the skepticism. It's pretty great. It has a lot of call backs to the original without ignoring the more current state of how games should be. It's fun, challenging, scary, and just looks great. I can't really get myself to throw down $60 for it, but I would definitely pick it up on sale.

Resident Evil 7 is a return to form in my opinion. I love the way it captures the essence of the original with the Bakers house. Admittedly the end of the story could have been a bit better location wise. I was hoping for some Resi 2 vibes! And that ending... So many unanswered questions!

Yea, the fixed camera angles do a better job of giving it that 'horror movie type feel'.
