Games Beaten In 2017!

Recommended Posts

I recently built a Retropie mainly for some MAME gaming, so I've been putting it through its paces recently. I ran through a game I haven't played in ages...

Dodonpachi: Arcade (MAME)

dwUdiJxl.jpg

I know it's cheating playing it on MAME with unlimited credits, but whatever, it's fun! The collision detection in this game is so liberal, and that's great, because things get out of hand very quickly. Great game!

39. Airlock (PAL version) (Atari 2600)

This has some significant differences from the NTSC version (which I've always liked for some reason), with decidedly nicer graphics for your character and the torpedoes he has to jump over.

Unfortunately the upgraded graphics also introduce a bug that makes your character bang his head against the top floor's ceiling if he jumps on the wrong animation frame, making an already-aggravating game into an exercise in frustration. Still, it's short, and within an hour I was able to beat it. D-.

40. Star Voyager (NES)

Same comments as last year. How did this one get the reputation of being so hard? This year it took me less than 5 hours to beat, and that includes an hour or two of simply remembering how to play the darn thing. D+.

41. Wayne's World (SNES)

Beat this back in 2013 on the Genesis, and most of my comments still apply. But the SNES version is probably worse, with pervasive slowdown and buggy one-hit kills I don't remember from the Genesis version. D.

I've beaten quite a few games this year. Of course, "beating" certain games, especially those of Atari/ Intellivision categories, can be considered "subjective." I only included those with a definite ending screen. I probably would beat more modern games if I haven't had more interest in Atari collecting a of late. The homebrew scene has made me fall in love with vintage gaming again.

I'm most proud of adding Anguna to the defeated list, it was by far my most favorite game on this list.

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End PS4 01/03/17

2. Doom PS4 01/24/17
3. Bravely Second: End Layer 3DS 02/07/17 (Easier than the first game)
4. Final Fantasy Explorers 3DS 03/09/17
5. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection PS2 03/25/17
6. The Witch & the Hundred Knight: Revival Edition PS4 04/15/17 (More like Witch and the Hundred hours, this game took forever to beat, first played it in October)
7. Life Is Strange PS4 04/25/17 (There's no way to really lose a game like this so not sure if it counts.)
8. Mega Man X7 PS2 04/28/17 (This game DOES suck as bad as everyone says. Mega Man and 3D don't mix well.)
9. The Last of Us: Left Behind PS4 04/28/17
10. Mighty No. 9 PS4 05/08/17
11. Anguna 2600 emulated 05/08/17 (Later beat it on an actual game cartridge)
12. Castlevania: The Lecarde Chronicles 2 PC 05/15/17
13. Homefront: The Revolution PS4 06/01/17
14. Pitfall II 2600 06/05/17 (I actually never knew how to beat this game, for some reason I could never beat it before)
15. Isaiah’s Wii Chase 2600 emulated 06/18/17 (didn't know it had an ending but it does)
16. Sword of Iffrit 2600 emulated 06/18/17 (hope this gets a physical release soon)
17. Rise of the Tomb Raider PS4 06/19/17
18. Heroes of Ruin 3DS 06/20/17
19. Shantae: Half Genie Hero Vita 07/10/17
20. Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified Vita 07/19/17
21. Dead Rising 2: Off the Record PS3 07/26/17
22. Star Ocean: Integrity & Faithlessness PS4 08/09/17 (Why this game got so much hate, I don't know. Always one of my favorite series to play)
23. Deadrising PS4 09/11/17
24. Drakon Croisade 2600 09/14/17 (Could never find any info on it so I bought a copy, and it was a blast, I love Atari hacks too. Need a Haunted House hack.)
25. Another Adventure 2600 emulated 09/15/17
26. Another Adventure 2 2600 emulated 09/15/17
27. Suicide Adventure 1 2600 emulated 09/16/17 -- Reminds me of all those NES hacks where they just up the difficulty of an existing game. Beating it deserves some bragging rights.
28. Dead Rising 2 PS4 10/05/17 -- What can I say? I enjoy zombie games.
Currently working on, a bit at a time:
1. Dead Souls 1 (PS3): At the rate i'm playing i'll beat it sometime in the next millennium.
2. Persona 3 (PS2): Same here. Could be worse, my last save state for Mega Man Command Mission is 2007, and now I'll have to start all over just because I can't remember how to play it.
3. Earthbound (SNES Classic) -- Never played it back in the day before because I thought the graphics looked stupid but never knew it had such a great story.
4. Possible Mission (7800) -- Just acquired a copy so I can make the impossible, possible. Ahem. (Bentley Bear, you're next.)
5. Resident Evil Origins (PS4) -- Beat those games on other systems, I just wanted to see how well the game looked on a PS4).
6. Dragon Quest VII (3DS): Beat it on PS1, but heard theymade some major changes for the DS version. I logged 120 hours on it a decade ago, and loved it, even if most other folks didn't.
7. World of Final Fantasy (Vita): Haven't given the Vita much love lately. Maybe because I can't find a copy of Ys 8 in stores yet.
8. Zelda: Windwaker (Gamecube, playing on a Wii, though)
Think I have enough game systems? I need to stick with one game.

Had a few minutes last night to run through another arcade game via MAME on my Retropie...

Violent Storm: Arcade

6eEjgdel.jpg

M5xTrp9l.jpg

JXJejsxl.jpg

This game has become one of my favorite side scrolling beat-em-ups of all time. The gameplay is great, the graphics are so early 90's (in a good way), and the music is ridiculous, especially the infamous rap track on level 3 that makes absolutely zero sense. Konami nailed it on the head with this one!

I kept meaning to do little writeups on all these games as I went along, then got distracted yet again and wound up with a pile of beaten games so large that I didn't want to devote the time to writing a paragraph about each of them. Sooo... here's a big ol' plain list. :P

47. T2: The Arcade Game (Game Boy)

48. Touch the Dead (Nintendo DS)

49. Moon Chronicles (Nintendo 3DS)

50. 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Nintendo 3DS)

51. Centipede: Infestation (Nintendo Wii)

52. IronFall: Invasion (Nintendo 3DS)

53. Rayman: Raving Rabbids (Nintendo Wii)

54. Sonic Generations (Nintendo 3DS)

55. The House of the Dead: Overkill (Nintendo Wii)

56. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (Nintendo Wii)

57. Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis)

58. Link's Crossbow Training (Nintendo Wii)

59. Haunted House (Atari 2600)

60. Super Football (Atari 2600)

61. Breakout (Atari 2600)

62. Warlords (Atari 2600)

42. The Hunt for Red October (SNES)

A surprisingly playable little submarine action game. It's a bit too thin in the content department to qualify as a hidden gem, but as licensed titles go, one could do far, far worse. C+.

43. De Zaak van Sam (Philips CD-i)

This ultra-rare Dutch CD-i FMV detective game was only available via mail order, doesn't appear to have been dumped, and though it has English subtitles, they're offscreen when played in NTSC. So a lot of things had to go right for me and my wife to play it, but I happen to have a CD-i player that supports PAL mode and an Atlona PAL > NTSC converter I picked up for $15 which works very well, and I was able to find the game for a tolerable price.

In a funny way De Zaak van Sam is about as close as I've ever seen to an "interactive movie" that's a movie first and foremost. The interface itself is essentially non-existent, with all decisions made by pressing a single button at the right time. You could almost conceivably show this to someone without them ever knowing it's a game -- but not quite, since a certain unskippable sequence will inevitably have to be replayed a few times. It's got well-known Dutch actors, very reasonable production values, high video quality, and multiple endings -- plus a false ending that's possibly the most risqué thing I've ever seen in a non-pornographic commercial game.

It also has very little content, and took us less than 2½ hours to beat, with some of that taken up by "I wonder what will happen if...?" But it's memorable, and we had fun for as long as it lasted. C+.

44. Jajamaru Gekimaden: Maboroshi no Kinmajou (Famicom)

I played this action RPG courtesy of a fan translation that's mostly quite well-done (though it could do without the "Hey, bro!" stuff that shows up once or twice). The game itself is totally by-the-numbers, however, as it's a mediocre Zelda clone with a dash of StarTropics -- and very little in the way of distinctive ideas. Since it's very easy it wasn't unpleasant to slog through, but there's a reason I only played it while watching TV and never gave it my undivided attention. D+.

9. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

THIS has been the big timesink that's been slowing down playing other games for the last couple months. Being my favorite of the Final Fantasy run, I was all too happy to sink away all my gaming time into it. I am having to forcibly remove myself from playing new game+ right now, or I could not bother with any other games for the rest of the year!

Over the weekend, my friends were competing in a 24 Hours of Lemons event with their 1976 Datsun 280Z, and I was up with them to cover the event for the auto blog I write for. I tossed my Retropie in my backpack and we busted it out to play some arcade games via MAME in the RV in between driving stints and after hours. That resulted in beating a few games!

1941: Counter Attack

0Sp2d7hl.jpg

I haven't played this one in a long time. It has a much different feel than the earlier games, but it's tons of fun.

WWF Wrestlefest

H6H7Egfl.jpg

In honor of one of the other teams at the event, the Altimate Warriors (they have a Nissan Altima dressed up as the Ultimate Warrior), I fired this one up. I don't care that this one is a button mash fest, it's still fun.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

dZKzauCl.jpg

Now this was a blast! I haven't played through the first TMNT arcade game with 3 other people since one of my friends' birthday parties in the early 90's, where we probably spent $150 in quarters to play through it at the arcade.

Smash TV

obOPAGil.jpg

I was worried about the controls, since this is a dual stick shooter in the arcade, but somehow MAME figured out the button mapping on my Logitech "Dual Shock"-style pads and used the face buttons for the shots. I've never beaten this one, so blasting through this with a friend was a great time.

This thread is new to me. Ironically, I have just "beat" Centipede: Infestation for the Wii, and was curious for any discussion of it on AtariAge.

I love twin stick shooters, so I really enjoyed playing it with Pro Controller, although I tried the Wiimote/nunchuck controls better than expected. It's a very short game, which is good for me. I'm definitely planning on playing some more to both finish up all the Accomplishments and playing on the unlocked "Insane" difficulty. The "Normal" difficulty - which I completed it on - should likely be named "Easy". And I'm not a great player.

I don't know if it really feels like a modern/re-imagined Centipede as much as a new game just paying homage to the original. But, overall, I really enjoyed it. The ending definitely left it open for "Centipede: Infestation 2" but since it's six years old, and I don't think it was a big seller, I'm guessing we won't see that.

I also thought it was interesting that there a definite references to Missile Command in the game like the included "Missile Command Pack" unlockable, and mentions of it in the cut scenes, making me wonder if there was also originally going to be a Missile Command game in this series, too.

I don't beat too many games, but will definitely keep up on this thread and report back in when I do.

10. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Right now work hours are up, and a lot of my spare time is being spent keeping the dog away from the guys who're remodeling the bathroom (he is unusually scared of them & we're concerned he'll bite.) This was a perfect game, since I could play it in small chunks without losing progress. Plus, it was fun- I like puzzle platformers.

11. Sonic 3

I had not realized/forgotten how important memorization is in old Sonic games! I played a lot of 1 & 2 as a kid, and I can (for the most part) buzz through those... but we didn't have 3 back in the day. I got it from my sister during one of her teenage purges, and never really got around to playing it. Man, do I suck at it!

Although, there were definitely moments were my B button didn't respond like I expected. I probably need to clean the controller. I also want to have my Sonic fangirl friend stop by and give it a whirl... I wasn't able to get a single chaos emerald, and I can't decide if it's because I'm just bad at that special stage or if I've introduced some lag into my setup between the switchbox & the HDMI converter. (for the record, I've not noticed anything in other games.) She's basically a Sonic 3 expert, so if there's something wrong, she can tell me! ;)

45. Super Battleship (SNES)

I'll have to go back and compare, but my gut feeling is that, though this release is more polished than the Genesis one I beat back in 2013 (which crashes in lieu of an ending!), the slower SNES CPU makes for a more tedious experience. C-.

46. Super Final Match Tennis (SNES)

This Japanese-exclusive title has decent mechanics but offers little challenge once you've learned the basics, and -- despite the presence of several different shot types -- gives you no real reason to use anything but a single button for most matches. Still, it's fair and very playable. C.

47. Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday (SNES)

I expected a milquetoast, lighthearted "spooky" romp. Instead, I got one of the stranger games I've played in recent memory, with a surrealistic design that's full of Looney Tunes imagery (especially the early days, when Daffy Duck was an amoral wildcard), and a musical score that's at times boldly dissonant.

It's an easy game overall -- I 1CC'd Hard mode and had 33 lives or so left over at the end -- but can also be a pain in the neck, with forced hits and questionable platform detection marring a few stages. It's also buggy -- I soft-locked the game once (and nearly twice) -- and shows other signs of being rushed, like the typo on the company splash screen (!), the dearth of voice samples for Porky, or the fact that they didn't bother to remove the unused, empty fourth life container from the HUD when playing on Hard.

Still, despite the occasional annoyances (and trivial boss fights), Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday sure is a trip. I appreciate its enthusiasm and creativity, as well as its smart ways of rewarding a skillful or adventurous player. B-.

Had a few minutes Thanksgiving morning, so I popped this one in the ol' Genesis and gave it a go...

eyc8pAZl.jpg

Fire Shark (Genesis): This is a Toaplan shooter, but not nearly as hard as Truxton is. Speaking of that game, Fire Shark is like Truxton and 1943 made a baby, and what a cool baby it is! This is one of those shooters that really rewards you for avoiding death. Once you get fully powered up, especially with the fire laser weapon, you are almost unstoppable. If you die (and when you do, it's mostly do to laziness), you get relegated to the next level down, and back to the multi-directional pea-shooter. I was on the last level and lost it, and almost didn't beat the end boss. Down to my last life, I did it!

And this is the screen I got:

Asz5UFKl.jpg

What that has to do with a retro-futuristic shooter starring a biplane, I'll never know, but YEAH!!!

48. Ghostbusters (NES)

I originally beat this in the early 1990s with turbo; this time around, I didn't. I may have triggered the stairway infinite health glitch by accident -- not that it matters, since it's triggered by a normal gameplay event and you can't see your health anyway.

Too bad that stairway scene is so fundamentally broken, as the rest of the game is a bit more playable than it gets credit for -- especially if you know that the ghosts you immobilize on the map are the exact same ghosts you can then suck up with the Ghost Vacuum, allowing you to slow the PK increase and grind to your heart's content. But the stairway sequence may be the single worst segment in any licensed game on the NES. D-.

49. RPM Racing (SNES)

Not as long or as difficult as I expected, this early SNES release and precursor to Rock 'n' Roll Racing is still a simplistic and repetitive slog that offers little challenge -- though I'd take this game's clueless CPU drivers over rubberband AI any day. And at least the controls are OK, despite the weak frame rate: basically speaking the game plays fine. But the grind-heavy design and weird approach to game saves are major demerits. D+.

50. WarpSpeed (SNES)

I've beaten this before -- twice, even. D+.

Another one down, sorta...

Shantae and the Pirates' Curse: 3DS

ATIOxhdl.jpg

As you can see, since I didn't 100% the game, I got the "bad" ending. I plan on going back and collecting everything and doing it again.

Also, this game is AWESOME. I bought the 3DS mainly to play Zelda games, and since the day I bought this one, it hasn't left the cartridge port. If you like new retro-style Metroidvania/platformers, you need to play this one. It's right up there with Shovel Knight in my book. The music, gameplay, and story is all done very well.

Gunstar Heroes: Genesis

LMjvE3el.jpg

qurDRiml.jpg

2U5yYHUl.jpg

I've beaten this one before, but not for years, and I've never done it without dying like I did this time! I bought this game way back out of the bargain bin at KB Toys for $19.99. I didn't know anything about the game, but the screenshots on the back of the box looked cool so I took a chance. It was obviously the right choice! It's one of the best run and gun games ever made, and one of my all-time favorites. Now I need to dig up my copy of the GBA sequel...
