It's a tedious build, but not terribly hard. It turned out, the only issue I had, was an incorrect chip in my PAL configuration. The assembly was all done properly. Does it take time, yes. I would say, it's not like being able to do a brake job on your auto. It's like re-building the engine, transmission, chassis, body, and suspension all by hand. Worth it in the end. I was probably the least experienced person on the beta test team, as far as soldering and electronics are concerned. The problem I had initially was not bending up a pin and forgetting a few jumper wires, and that was because I failed to read a few posts in the beta thread. To be honest, the hardest part for me was the desoldering on the U1MB to replace the right angled headers with straight ones -- and after watching a video FJC made I got through that part. If you've never used a soldering iron before, I would not choose this as your first project, because there is a good chance you will have trouble. Oh, but powering it on and seeing the U1MB screen for the first time -- it was awesome. I agree with Michael, Dropcheck, and others that if you are new to soldering and trouble shooting electronics then I highly recommend buying a completed board from McRorie. I've completed several builds like this in the past, and had to help correct others work who had good intentions, but were a bit over their heads. Not trying to scare the DIYers, but know what you are getting yourself into by looking at every requirement to complete a working board. I think Jon's (JFC) build video's is an awesome idea to help those taking the self building route. Talking with Stephen, he has put together a nice list of everything you can order in a batch from say Digikey, so will do that too most likely. What about a bulk order, or a good source on the relan case and custom bezel - OR I guess maybe a sticky posting of source locations for all the bits. James It is my intention to put a lot of info and links on a permanent page in my AtariBits website (link in signature). So far there exists a placeholder for such which has been used to relay recent events for this project. Might be a good idea to separate the construct project into another thread, as all of those interested might not keep up on this thread regularly, to better gauge the amount of interest and not derail this one nearly as much, by keeping all of that info in one place. Give it a good amount of lead time. If it's a couple dozen or so in the first go, it might not be so bad. If it's a few dozen or more... my sympathies to the team. But yes, still a considerable task none the less since we are talking about a motherboard and not a peripheral or upgrade.. One thing I did when ordering parts for the beta board was to put the component locations in each part Reference field. Then the locations are printed on the ziplock label with each part. I am interested in at least 4-5 maybe as many as 10. MacRorie has volunteered to be point man for the assembled versions, but I believe he is also willing to handle bare board orders too. You'll definitely get a little discount if you order 100 boards vs 10 from the board house. The one restraint I believe he mentioned is a weight restriction on a single board order from his PCB house. May have to break it up into seperate orders for assembled and bare. That makes it extremely hard to follow traces. Perhaps some projects do that on purpose to make reverse engineering more difficult (although if somebody really wanted to do that, etching the layer away is trivial). The black boards are probably the worse in this regard, and the green are the best. Why would you want to follow traces in an all-new PCB? Just wondering It's an artistic thing, because a nicely done PCB is a piece of art. seeing the traces just adds to that aspect. Since the files have been made public, you are free to have them made in any color you desire. My preference would be black also, or a bright yellow. But if it means saving money via a group buy, then I'm good with whatever color it is. Well the PCB files still haven't been released yet, but soon. Just wondering What mytekcontrols said (artistic point of view), especially if it's not your own making. But also quality inspection if it's the first board you receive from a manufacturer.
