Neo Geo Game by Game Podcast

Recommended Posts

Hello! Just to say, I am making a podcast looking at all of the Neo Geo AES, MVS, CD, Pocket, Pocket Colour and Hyper Neo Geo 64 games in chronological order. I plan to cover two games an episode, with an episode dedicated to hardware and year reviews. It will use the typical Game by Game podcast format, with user feedback welcome. Because of the insane prices of Neo Geo games, as well as audio equipment and so on. I will use official emulation if available (for example SNK Arcade Classics vol. 1), I hope to have the first episode out by the end of 2020, that may seem like a while but this will be expensive, and I need to save money.

If a Neo Geo podcast is already out or in the works that I do not know of, I will scrap this.

Also, what are people's thoughts on using patreon to fund this?

Anyway, the Facebook page is here

And my Wattpad account is here

Feel free to contact me here, or on either page.

Any questions?

I'm excited about this, because the Neo Geo was always a mysterious alien technology that only existed in arcades when I was a kid. In a time of fibs and one-upmanship in the nerd's schoolyard, nobody I knew ever even claimed to know someone who had a Neo Geo.

But I have to ask, why 4 years before releasing the first episode? I wonder if you're overplanning things up-front and perhaps committing the "big software project" sin, when it might be less risky and more fun to wing it a bit and just do an OK job on the first few episodes.

Simply because Neo Geo stuff is expensive, very, and I do not have enough money for all the games yet. In four years time, I feel like I will be in a situation that I could carry out this plan. Also, I don't have any editing software or decent audio equipment yet.

4 Years? Just get on and do an episode and see how it goes. You may surprise yourself. Maybe just keep it a monthly show.

I expect you, and everyone who is waiting will have lost interest in 4 years time.

Plus, someone else will enevitably do one in that time.

You don't need tons of expensive recording equipment either. Get yourself a blue yeti microphone and the free software Audacity and give it a go. You may surprise yourself.

That is a fair point, I just looked up the price of blue yeti microphones and I would not count £150 as not expensive. I know that Neo Geo games will be expensive so that is why I said that the first episode will be released within four years, so I have enough money. I think monthly might be a bit difficult in some cases, as some games are hard to get. Before starting I want to have enough games to do 5 episodes. I am going in chronological order and in episode 2 there is a mahjong game I cannot find anywhere. If someone else starts a Neo Geo podcast I am fine with that, they will probably have a different review structure to me and the more people talking about the console the better.

One of my friends is a musician and podcaster, he just got this mic and he loves it. We do a podcast together and it sounded great, even over Skype.

Thank you Ferg, by the way I love your show, I am on episode 90 I think at the moment and it is amazing. :)

WoW! - You can't go wrong with that mic setup. It even has the shockmount with it!

Give it a go! If you are unsure, I'm sure some of us podcasters would give it a pre-listen for you and give you some pointers, should you need them?

Even I got the hang of it fairly quick. The first few weren't good quality at all, but the contenet was ok and it got better with time!

That would be great! I need to do quite a bit of research for the introductory episode though.

Seven things,

1. Spaces between episodes may vary, as you know, Neo Geo cartridges are expensive and as I am going in chronological order and plan on playing every single game some games are hard to find.

2. Phil the No Swear Gamer always says to keep first things first, I will

3. Are you ok with using official emulation where needed (e.g., wii virtual console, anthologies)?

4. Related to 3 but not to the podcast, I just saw a copy of Metal Slug anthology for wii for £429, why?!

5. I will probably be doing this on my own, but in the Neo Geo Pocket/ Pocket Colour episodes I might have a co-host in the form of my brother, Cyberpunk Starfish, who currently has no online presence.

6. My WonderSwan podcast will probably come first, as most games are around £10 compared to the £100 of the most cheap Neo Geo games.

7. I know this will only be necessary right at the end, but does anyone know anyone with a copy of Samurai Shodown 5 Special?

Buying all the games you want to talk about is madness. Just buy the ones you really want for yourself and just use emulation for the rest. You can even get 100 in 1 neogeo carts and the games on them are indistinguishable from the real ones.

I am not a big fan of emulation, for stupid self-governing rules I cannot overturn even though I set them, if it is not official available, or available second hand, I will just describe the key details of the games, or see if someone near me has a copy. That's probably what I would do with the mah-jong games. I will try to play on original hardware where possible, as intended, but space, money and so on will limit this.

Hello...

I have been trying to write this for a little while, but I have some bad news. After recent events impacting my life and months of self-evaluation I have come to the conclusion that I will not be able to create a Neo Geo podcast. I apologize for waiting so long to announce this, to be honest I have been afraid of what people's reactions will be. I know this is somewhat irrational.

In recent months my mental health has declined significantly, and I spent last year trying to deal with tragic events with over ambitious projects and aims, all of which led to failure, or at least failure by my own standards, that have made me feel even worse. I feel it is best for this wonderful community and myself if I reduce my plans to just the Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Colour, a system I feel I will be able to cover better.

Thank you for your support in trying to get this podcast to work, and I am sorry that it has not amounted to anything so far.

I hope I can still contribute to the Game by Game podcast and wider retro gaming communities.

- Philip the Whovian
