Poll - Model preference & value

Hi everyone,

 

I recently acquired a few units, and I am having internal dilemmas. I would like to only keep the 2 most valuable ones but I would like to have your insights.

To you, which units have the most collector/overall value?

Here are the systems I just got :

 

520 STm - 1 Meg - TOS 1.00

520 STfm - 4Meg - TOS 1.04

1040 STf - 4Meg - TOS 1.04

1040 STfm - 1Meg - TOS 1.04

1040 STe - 4Meg - TOS 1.06

 

I was thinking keeping the first and last one. The first for collector reason because it was a very early model, to run early games. The last because it is the "Enhanced" version, 4Megs to run a bunch of fancier games.

 

What would you do? What would be your sorting order and why? Please share.

The 1040 STe is a no-brainer. There is enough that is only available on e's that you simply have to keep it and explore that. As for the second, it really doesn't matter a great deal. I voted for the 4MB 520 STfm with TOS 1.04 because it's probably the best combination of compatible and resource rich of the remaining options.

Yeah, this really isn't any contest. The 1040STE with 4mb is clearly the best on the list. The only thing better would be a Mega STE.

 

The 520STFm is the next. Simply because the difference between the 1040STf and the 520STFm is the modulator. If you really wanted to, you could hook it up to a TV.

Yeah the 1040STe.

 

Plus whichever other machine has the same floppy drive eject button/top case plastic, so you have a source of spares for the future.

 

From memory the power supply of the STf/STfm cannot be swapped with the STe, but the keyboard, floppy drive, top case and a few other items can.

Is TOS 1.04 compatible with all previous software?

 

I voted the STe of course and the 4 meg 520 STFM. I voted the 520 STFM because you would probably upgrade the 520 with TOS 1.0 to 4 megs and TOS 1.04, plus the STFM can be hooked up to a TV in a pinch.

Oddly I've just done this (UK mind you so I don't know if there is something else different about the US ones). The only thing I had to do was remove the STE supply from the metal frame it sits on and transfer it to the STFM frame as they are different.

The STm and the STe are the obvious keepers but personally I wouldn't get rid of any of them.

Considering difficulties with RAM expansion in some ST(f) indeed you need to keep some of 4MB STs. And STE, of course.

Did not ask what to do with money after selling. Of course you need to get an Mega STE !

Me personally? I would sell four out of five, and use the money to buy a Mega STE. It is the absolute cream of the crop for the ST line of computers. Selling four should be enough to get a nice MSTE, maybe.
