Long-time lurker saying 'hello', rekindling the TI-99/4A love affair

Hi- if this isn't the right area on the TI boards for this please let me know. :)

As some background, I grew up with a 99/4A in our house many many moons ago- my dad was a TIer in the Sherman, TX area. His name was Sam Moore Jr., so if you've seen some of the music demos, you've seen some of his work :) (Forest Roses, Time in a Bottle, Yesterday, Maple Leaf Rag, Ode to Puppytown, etc)

For Valentine's Day my wife found a working TI-99/4A console in an antique store here in SW Missouri of all places. She knows I'm a sucker for the TI stuff, so picked it up for me; I still needed to get a power transformer and a video cable. Boy, did she not know what she was getting herself into!

Over the last couple of months I've managed through some eBay luck to pick up some neat stuff (new in box joysticks, cassette program recorder, speech synthesizer and a handful of carts); I'm still looking around for a PEB (particularly interested in the 32k RAM expansion, disk controller, and 5 1/4" floppy drive) but those auctions get really expensive!.

It's been really cool to mess with the computer again 'in the flesh' so to speak- I've used several really good emulators but it's just not the same.

Anyhow- thank you for listening to my story. :)

Nathan

Welcome back. You can get a NanoPEB when they are available from time to time on ebay for fairly cheap (around $70 US). They appear on ebay from the developer which lives around the Austin TX area at 5 to 10 at a time. It does not use actual diskettes, but disk images and plugs directly into the 99/4A side port. It has the 32k and the TMS9902 chip for serial RS232 communications. The disk images are 400k and it count mount 3 at a time.

You're getting a good picture there. How and what is connected ?

:)

Thank you! I have a 5-pin (I think) to RCA connector cable that's just running to an el cheapo Wal-Mart 19" TV :) I'm very pleased with how the picture turned out.

My TI is connected to the monitor, and then i have a TI Program Recorder connected via factory cable and a set of TI sticks attached to it (though I've been looking around for better sticks).

Thank you, and thanks for the super advice! I've messed around with the emulators some so I'm familiar with the disk images. I will definitely keep an eye out!

I definitely know and enjoy the music by your dad. Welcome back to the TI fold. There is a great group of people here.

Thank you! I joined the forums hoping to connect up with like-minded folks, and to not drive my wife nuts with me talking all the time about the TI-99.

Welcome! ...I think many of us have similar stories of loving the TI when we were younger and then getting that interest re-kindled. Regardless, even if the stories aren't the same this is a awesome group of people who are really the foremost experts at the TI and at being super cool :)
