Bobbety_F
I realise that this is a game I had no business being unaware of...but I was, and I just lost the best part of Saturday to it...and I couldn't be happier to have done so:-) I became determined to reach the 40,000 needed for the Activision patch, despite knowing that I'd never actually receive one in 2017! I didn't get there, and the more I played after my highest score (around the 30,000...ish), the worse I became. After playing, I Googled around a bit, and discovered that this game is considered fairly easy...and 40, 000 therefore pretty easy to reach. Ah well...I still had an absolute blast with it. Are there any more 2600 shooters as awesome as this that I should know about!? This gameplay is emulated on the Android emulator, through the Nvidia Shield TV. I have the real cart (minus packaging) in my Amazon basket, but am holding off final purchase in case this wasn't released in Pal territories. Anyone know for certain? https://youtu.be/w0xEDxelN0g

+remowilliams
One of my favorites as well. When you get into that Spider Fighter zone - awesome...
Bobbety_F
You've really nailed it, calling it the 'zone'!I haven't played a shooter for years, literally years, that got my focus like this one!
+DrVenkman
I never had this one as a kid. I just discovered it myself about 18 months ago. My high score is about 120,000 or so - to me, the hardest part of the game is between about 18,000 and 30,000 points. I can't really get into a flow in that early/middle sort of action. After about 30,000 I am totally in the zone.
AtariBuff
Bought Spider Fighter as a kid in favour of Megamania that day, if I remember correctly. What a furious blast this game is - a great, speedy shooter with nice graphics.
+KaeruYojimbo
Lead is a pretty amazing homebrew shooter you might like. Edited March 20, 2017 by KaeruYojimbo
davyK
Spider Fighter is a great game though I found it a bit easy when I was young....not so much now! Another shooter I really like is Solar Storm by Imagic that uses the paddles!
Bobbety_F
Will be checking all of these out at the weekend - thanks for the suggestions, guys:-)
G-type
Robot Tank is sort of a shooter... I'm hooked on it.
Flojomojo
Yes on Spider Fighter. Beamrider is another game I ignored back in the day but really shouldn't have.
davyK
Beamrider is a great shout. I was a huge fan of Megamania back in the day as it reminded me of the great Astro Blaster by Sega. I still feel it holds up well today. Edited March 25, 2017 by davyK
Atarian7
I like Spider Fighter a lot. I played it for the Activision Patches challenge that was here on Atari Age this past summer. I finally made it to 40,000. 30 to 40 seemed easier than 20 to 30. My experience is similar to DrVenkman's. I think GORF is a great shooter. It's a game I would have never played if not for the High Score Club. Edited March 25, 2017 by Atarian7
Cynicaster
M-Network Astroblast using paddle controls is probably one of the most underrated shooter experiences on the system, IMO.
Bobbety_F
I'm now the proud owner of a real Spider Fighter cartridge, which feels great to play with a genuine Atari joystick (as painful as it is;-)) Tomorrow, a package should arrive containing paddles and a trackball, so I should be able to try Astroblast and the other suggestions the way they were meant to be played...If I can find the carts:)
Lord Innit
I liked Spider Fighter but when I bought it bitd, on my first go I lasted for over an hour before I had to switch the console off. I thought I might have had it on a children's setting, but no. Even now I find it too easy because too many extra lives are awarded. Shame really. I don't always agree with Kermode's reviews (Sing was dull imo), but I enjoy listening to them nontheless, especially his rants and particularly the ones against Micheal Bay films. Bobbety_F
I've finally reached 40, 000 on Spider Fighter (unemulated), and recorded it for posterity:-) https://youtu.be/BiTRpyfJb0E
