We all love the Atari 2600, but with every good console, there is always bad games. I am cutting E.T. and Pac-Man some slack because they have already been bashed enough. Also, the porn games are another story. My list is full of games that truly deserve it.

1. Fire Fly

2. I Want My Mommy

3. Sorcerer

4. Karate

5. Skeet Shoot

6. Sneak n' Peek

7. Glacier Patrol

8. Star Fox

9. Sssnake!

10.Fire Fighter

AKA games I never want to play. It burns my butt that many of these keep coming out on Flashback type collections, simply because Atari has the rights to them.

Swordquest 1

Swordquest 2

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Riddle of the Sphinx

Home Run

Basic Math

Football

ugh, that's enough

Think it would be more fun to come up with popular games that you don't care for, but most people seem to like. And for every asshat that says Pac-Man or E.T. sucks, could just as well shove their Megamania cart up where the sun don't shine.   :rolling:

In about 1982, a friend purchased Air Lock, largely on my recommendation -- presumably based on a careful review of the Data Age catalogue. It was the worst game I had played up to that point.

The Swordquest "games" make little sense without the supporting materials, and they should have quietly disappeared after the contest ended.

Any love (or hate) for Strawberry Shortcake's Musical Matchups?

Swordquest: FireWorld.  Worst 2600 game ever, and that's even if you do count Pac-Man and E.T.!

Let's see, nine other games I found I could do without are...

  • Karate
  • Fire Fighter
  • RealSports Baseball & Super Baseball
At least with Home Run you can actually tell why a pitch was a ball or a strike!
  • Sky Skipper
  • Amidar
  • Basic Programming
  • James Bond 007
  • Rubik's Cube

I haven't played everything in the catalog, so I'm sure there are some even worse stinkers out there.  But these games stick out in my mind not only because of how overall bad they were, but also on how badly they failed to deliver on their promises.  Sky Skipper and Amidar are hollowed out shells of their arcade games, Basic Programming isn't even that, and James Bond 007 captures absolutely nothing from the Bond films, and so on.

Why all the hate for pac man?  Granted it was ugly compared to what the system could have done, but at the end of the day it played like pac man.  At the time, I played the heck out of it.

Holy crap, really?  Demons to Diamonds is one of my TOP 10 Atari games!  Love that game, childhood favorite of mine.  I'll agree with all your other choices though.

Even in text form, see how famously recognizable the sounds are. How many movies have used those sounds all the decades since? Atari might still be around today if only they had licensed those samples.    :rolling:

The *one* thing Atari freely gave up and didn't enforce by way of litigation. How ironic. And it's not just Superman III… plenty of other movies, TV shows, documentaries, radio spots, etc. use Atari's Pac-Man sounds for various things. Coleco's Donkey Kong sounds too.

Well, I like E.T. for one. I also like Hangman and Canyon Bomber. Not a hated game -- just an unpopular opinion -- but I actually prefer Atari's Phoenix port to Demon Attack.

Some "F"s I've given out on my blog: www.woodgrainwonderland.com

-Gauntlet

-Basic Math

-Congo Bongo

-Airlock

-Almost all the Mystique games

-Final Approach

-Double Dragon

-Dishaster

Not a comprehensive list, but all significantly worse than E.T. (a C+) or Pac-Man (not rated yet -- only up to the Gs alphabetically -- but I'd probably give it a D+).

Infiltrate must be an acquired taste or something. To me, it's a fun and quick reflex romp once it gets going. About the only game where I can forgive the trippy color palette and seizure inducing explosions too.

Grew up playing it though as we ran across it at the local Eagle grocery store one fine day. lol

So hard to pick just ten...

  • Miner 2049er (agonizingly slow controls, abysmal collision detection, grating music)
  • Miner 2049er vol. 2 (more?!? really?!?)
  • Karate (aka "Dancing Diaper Stickmen")
  • Racquetball (cool concept, impossibly awful execution)
  • Defender (thanks for ruining one of my favorite arcade games, Atari)
  • Shark Attack/Lochjaw (anytime you think 2600 Pac-Man was terrible, play this and see just how bad a maze game can be)
  • Donkey Kong Jr. (Donkey Kong was merely disappointing, but this is like Shark Attack with apes)
  • Zaxxon (it might have not been quite so awful of a game, if they weren't trying to call this mess "Zaxxon")
  • Quest for Quintana Roo (it's been so long since I've played this festering stinkbomb, I've forgotten the myriad of reasons I hated it - but there were oh-so-many...)
  • Math Gran Prix (I really shouldn't have to justify this one)

Any love (or hate) for Strawberry Shortcake's Musical Matchups?

That game always looked terrible to me. Well a couple of months ago, I found it cheap and got it for my daughter. My kids LOVE it. I realize now it's actually a great game for young kids.

Firefly and Air Lock I'd definitely consider bad games.

The coloured boxes surely were firsts, innovation, experimentation and so forth. Games like Home Run, Football, Basic Math, Flag Capture, Board Games, Card Games etc...

Atari programmers were looking for ideas besides space games, and Atari let them experiment. You could do anything, the freedom to create. Artists. Best workplace in the world, surely.

That you could play Golf at home was groundbreaking. So I believe there are no bad games in the colour box range.
