Going for the best of 3

You need to get both. :D

The 800XL is a great machine, is still my all time fave machine simply because of the design and reliability.

The 1200XL is sexy. Compatability isn't that big an issue, remember the 1200 was the first of the XL line so it was the system that made the jump to the new OS. People forgot about the OS problems when Atari launched the 600 and 800XL and dumped huge numbers on the market.

As you have a 130XE , I'd go first for the 1200XL, then get the 800XL later. Having said that, the 800XLs are cheap as chips, even on ebay.

If you don't have a drive yet, look out for an XL and 1050 drive bundle, you'll save on shipping and people don't pay much (stateside) for them.

Thanks for the heads up but I do have a drive, RANA 1000, and I am very pleased!

Which one should I get first because in the perspective that you put both in I might just end up with both??????

Hey don't forget the XEGS! The detachable keyboard is unique and you can play carts or disk games that don't need to use keys in a very small unit. Please don't pay any attention to the pastel buttons ;)

I own a couple 800XLs, a 1200XL, 65XE, 130XE and an old 800.

I use the 800XL the most, my original one with 256k upgrade. I don't like the start/select/option keys on the XE models. The 1200XL has a nice keyboard but I don't like the cartridge slot being on the side (that's where my disk drives are.) I *do* like not having to hold down option to boot most software though! You can get around that with an OS upgrade on the 800XL (or 65/130XE too.)

I hardly ever use the 800 since it's just so big and clunky (I know, I know... some people think this is its charm.)

If your interested in collecting the "best" Atari 8-bit machines you need a modified one.

A modified 600XL with upgraded video circuitry and 64KB RAM will beat any standard 800XL and 1200XL. At least it beats any 8-bit in size ;)
