A2600
Is the 1200XL the one with the cool atari boot up screen or does the 800XL do that too??
Curt Vendel
Originally the Atari 400 & 800 would boot to Memo Pad if not cartridge was installed or disk drive connected. The 600/800XL would boot to built in BASIC or Diagnostic if the OPTION key was held down... the XE's would do the same... The 1200XL "Attract Mode" as I guess would be the best way to describe it was pretty, but useless and while the Note Pad on the 400/800 wasn't capable of being saved or printed, I can remember many a day when I needed to take a quick note of a telco# or msg and no pen/paper were handy, so a quick flick of the switch and I was typing away, that was a neat feature of the 400/800's... svenski
On the 1200XL it is the HELP key that puts into diagnostics. It may turn on with memo pad. If it does, it is a case of call your nearest Atari service center...but they closed many years ago . Turned on without a cartridge or loaded drive connected then depending on the ROM your 1200XL has it will boot into a black screen with a multi color (scrolling alternating colors) ATARI on screen. If left it will then go into the normal attract mode where background and border colors alternate.
