Why does my E.T. look and sound better than yours?

I am new to "collecting" for Atari.

I recently picked up a copy of E.T.

It looks and souands different from what i was expecting.

It has more colours and a better quality sound than what iv seen online.

I cant find any info on why.

Could it be a regional difference? Or a homebrew remake?

The E.T. letters at the intro are 3-D.

E.T. has whites in his eyes.

The land in the gameplay is brown instead of green.

And other colour differences.

The sound is also much better.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I know PAL versions of games display different (usually bizarre) colors than expected when played on an NTSC TV.

I didn't think it affected the sound any. What exactly is different about the sound?

That said, just looking at the screen shots you posted, a few of the pictures look like the TV tint and brightness need to be adjusted. I'm no expert though.

I use an old crt tv. The color is fine on all other games and systems.

The intro music sounds "better" i cant explain it. Kind of like its a sine wave vs a square wave, (if that makes sense).

I trust my tv is fine. The pictures i took are a good representation of what it looks like in real life.

Nowhere on the cart does it say pal.

...my curiosity is getting the best of me.

Some of the videos you find online were likely captured through an emulator because it's easier. They don't always get the colors right.

Also games designed for CRT look better on CRT in general. The designers created the graphics on CRTs to look good on their screens. Plus the scanlines on those displays help hide the blockiness of low res graphics.

I know this game gets a bad buzz so i was currious to check it out for my self.

I was expecting to play the same thing as the AVGN. However this looks nicer than what he was playing.

Im suprised too, I am having lots of fun with this game.

Thanks for the response.

I am still curious tho, is this PAL?

Id like to see some real screen capures of a PAL verion played on a 2600 for coparison.

The colors don't look like PAL on NTSC to me. Here are some shots emulating this setup.

BTW: The 3D effect you are noticing on the title screen is created either by your TV, the video signal creation of your console or the cable. Most likely all three together.

Hmmm.. i donno. Is it a coincidence that E.T. is in his proper color because my t.v. connection is crappy?

If so, i dont want to change a thing.

I would assume something was wrong if E.T. showed up pink like that.

My connection should be solid. Im using a

Coax RF adapter and a gold rca cable.

Every other game looks "regular"

I just think its cool how good it looks.

E.T. has whites to his eyes and is properly coloured.

Its hard to capure on a cell phone camera.

Thanks for the immediate responses and tips!!

I still believe however, this cart would look the same on your Atari as it does mine!

Yeah...the 3-D like effect on the ET lettering is due to artifacting on your CRT. It was actually used on purpose in many games through the 80s to simulate additional colors being on screen that actually weren't. Could also explain why your ET appears to have whites in his eyes as well.

I adjusted the color, tint and brightness settings on my CRT TV and now I too have a unique colored version of E.T. !!

That said, it would be very interesting to hear the sound.

That also said, please tell me you're not planning on putting this up on eBay with like a $1,000 opening bid.

But then there is the sound...lol.

I swear its different in quality. Can i post audio here?

I know im digging too deep but... yeah.

What are you comparing it to? Sound quality can vary quite a bit from device to device. Sound from actual hardware played through your TV's speakers is going to sound better that a youtube video captured from an emulator at who-knows-what quality level playing on computer speakers.

Moycon! Haha! That looks good! Thank you for doing that! And no im not a reseller.

I only have one copy of the game so, your right, i have nothing to compare it to.

If i have to, ill make a quick vid for youtube to show you what i mean about sound and colour.

Oh! And btw, Moycon, with those t.v. setting, do other games look funny now?

And thanks again for the education.
