CarpetSoldier
Just picked up an STE and I've read that some early models had defective DMA chips. Is there a way to test in my DMA chip is defective in my STE?? thanks!
ataricrypt
Oh no, here we go again Exxos is the man to ask, he's done so much research and found no evidence of this myth... I myself have a few STe's using TOS 1.06 / 1.62 / 2.06 and all work a-ok with my ultrasatan. No data loss.
CarpetSoldier
Nice.. I hope it's just a myth! Going to order an ultrasatan this week and I'm super excited to have an STE finally. I also managed to get a SCART cable for it, and get it hooked up to a Sony PVM.
ijor
Not everybody agrees that it is a myth, I would say that there is some controversy. And even Exxos agrees that the (so called) bad DMA chip has more chances to make problems. If you want to know, open the computer and check the part number of the DMA chip. There is no (reliable) way to find out with a software test.
CarpetSoldier
Thanks.. I was hoping there was an easy software test that would grind away at the IO and report back if it found any checksum errors or whatnot. Alas I will record my part number and help contribute to Exxos' database.
TheNameOfTheGame
Open your Ste and check the DMA chip. Quote from Jookie's home page http://joo.kie.sk/?page_id=250 (you can find out by the chip signature – C025913-38 == bad, C398739-001A == good)
EzdineG
This is no myth. I have an STE that does not work with my SatanDisk. It corrupts any SD drive after the first boot. Doesn't happen with my 1040STFM. Edit: Id like to add that said STE has no issues reading from a real ACSI Supra drive. EzdineG : have you checked your DMA chip to see if it has chip signature "C025913-38" ?
