Memory question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So i'm trying to resurrect the smashed up STE by using parts from all the dead machines I have. The memory is physically damaged so I already know that needs to be replaced. Question is, will the following work for the STE?

http://www.memoryx.com/ape.html

It's listed as 9-chip parity memory but as far as i'm aware parity shouldn't matter as the ST just ignores it anyway..... can anyone confirm that will work?

I will get this machine working....... too much money and time has been invested in all this stuff, NOT GIVING UP!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

my advice would be getting one or two 256k RAM sticks and test before commiting to more expensive (and rarer) 1MB modules...

besides, little software makes use of RAM above 1MB, so with 4x256k SIMMs you should be fine...

here´s one option:

usually i would recommend Exxos (Chris) store but his site is offline ATM or Jays Retro Computer, though i didn´t see any 256k SIMMs for sale (but i´m sure if you ask, he´ll have some, but from the other side of the pond), but this kit seems reasonably priced and apparently with return option.

Parity should be an issue on the STE. I used various memory modules of different chip types and speeds without a problem although I've always used modules of the same type in the same machine, not mix and match.

Obsession pinball is reason enough to max out the RAM on your STE. It will play with 1MB but I recall it recognising any extra RAM and taking advantage it. Great game.
