No shoulder buttons on 6-button controller?

I bought a 6-button 3rd-party controller. Thought there was going to be shoulder buttons on this, but there is not.

 

Is my memory failing me, but didn't the Genesis in some controller revision have shoulder buttons on them, or not?

There is a mode button on the right, which is used to switch back to 3 button mode for a handful of games that are not compatible (Ms. Pac-man, Golden Axe 2 etc...) and some games use the mode button as an additional "action" button (Beyond Oasis, Fatal Fury 2, Etc...). Sounds like you are thinking of the Sega Saturn controller, which had 2 shoulder buttons used solely for game play.

Saturn. That's gotta be it. Maybe my memory was clouded a bit for the fact the SNES had shoulder buttons.

Yep ....the USA Saturn was jet black like the Genesis, too. Shoulder buttons were a SNES only thing until the Saturn, and then the PlayStation added FOUR of them. The Atari Jaguar required you to buy a "ProController" for shoulder buttons, and that goes for big bucks nowadays.

There are some third-party offerings that give you shoulder keys, like the SG Pro Pad 2.

Yes and no. Yes in that it has eight buttons, but no in that the shoulder keys are just mapped to other buttons on the controller, so you're not getting eight individual functions.
