Jim Pez
Do any of you know if it is possible to some how hook up a smart phone to a dial up modem ? I have seen a retro phone you can connect an iphone to. this method would let you hook the iphone to a 70's modem like they did in wargames movie. It's most likely not going to work, due to the level of compression that is being used over cellular networks. One could try it with an acoustic coupler and a bluetooth headset of course. Flojomojo
Interesting question. Looks like someone else had a similar idea ...back when it was easier to buy analog phone stuff in stores. http://ask.metafilter.com/29798/Traditional-Voice-Connection-Modem-over-CDMA-digital-Cellular
low.blow
I have an Atari 400 with an Atari 830 Acoustic coupled modem. I bought one of those retro phone things to connect to my smartphone to try and do exactly what you are suggesting. I did not have any success. I think Grimakis is right, the cell network compression prevents this from working. I am now using a lantronix mss100 to telnet into bbs's instead.
