Roy Orison 'Pretty Woman' sound demo

Back in the early 80s, I had two digital audio demo's where you would pus the start button on the computer, and the screen would blank and play roughly 10 seconds of digitized audio (although it sounded terrible) of a song. Who would have ever guessed back then that this would be the norn for listening to music years later. :) Anyhow, there were two of these demo's floating around back then, each taking up a full disk. One was "You Really Got Me Now" by Van Halen. The other was "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison. I have Van Halen as an XEX file. Does anyone have Roy Orbison?

I remember the Van Halen one, but not Roy Orbison? I have the Madonna 'Material Girl' on disk somewhere and also the 'Juicy Lucy' sample! ;-) Heh, used to think they were amazing BITD.

'Pretty Woman' is an original song by Roy Orbison. Van Halen did a remake. Roy was rocking while the Van Halen bros. were still playing with baby blocks.

think he's referring to "remembering the van halen one" - as the van halen sample of "you really got me"

Spent my early years doing digi demos, as soon as I bought my Replay sampling cartridge. I've dug out the dozen or so disks (each with 3 samples on) I did back in the day and packed them up into a ZIP file. They're all in ATR format, and work OK in emulators. They all come with the same music player software I wrote back in the day, which needs some instructions to use. The disks have on-disk instructions, but I've extracted them out and created a PDF file (included in the ZIP), correcting my 30 year old spelling errors along they way! They're all as-is, etc. I have attached the ZIP file to this post.AtariDigiDisks.zip

Spot on - I meant I had the sample program that was Van Halen's cover of The Kinks 'You Really Got Me' - by the way does anyone know of or have the original hardware/software that was used to make these? I remember there was an intro page with the details but it's been a looooong time since I booted these!

EDIT - just seen the above post!

you can still get hold of Replay - but usually in joblots of ebay sales

IIRC, there were two versions

1] 2-Bit Systems - Replay - they also produced digidrum/digisynth

2] Gralin Replay

both comprised a cart (with an audio cable/ ¼" jack) and a software disk

the sampling frequencies were (pretty cr*p by today's standards)

6, 8, 10, 12, 16, and 21Khz mono.

the capture/load/save/playback process was all menu driven

i'm wondering if there's a pc application that can convert mp3/wav files to atari (2-bit compatible) files

Sorry to be Mr Pedant Brenski, its a 3.5mm jack :)

1/4 inch is the OLD headphone size :)

Its my Maplin Electronics coming out :)

But on a on topic note, Scotty did you have either an ST or an Amiga, the reason I ask is that I do remember a Pretty woman sample but I'm pretty sure it was on an Amiga disk, it could be just coincidence but I just don't remember an Atari 8 bit one and I'm not bad at remembering the stuff from that time (with the odd minor error)

I had a Parrot (paddle device), and I'm pretty sure I sampled about a min of Yello's "Oh Yeah" back in the day, and some Art of Noise and Kraftwerk too. Sadly, all of my disks are lost.

Parrot put out a superb demo disk that inspired me to write Digi-Studio, and my digi-demos. I have attached a copy of their demo disk in ATR format. It works in emulators. ParrotDemoDisk.ATR

Yeah, I actually had both. I had the 800 and C64 side by side, then sold the C64 and got the ST. Then after a wile, sold that and got the Amiga. I was well versed in all four of the major platforms back in the day.

There was a wheel of Fortune game for the Amiga, when you played solo, the computer players were 'Amiga Red' and 'Amiga Blue'. It used software speech synthesis similar to SAM, and would say "Go Ahead Amiga Blue". A friend and I say that to each other all these years later. Sticks in our heads like an old movie quote.

I remember calling long distance and downloading a disc with the Van Halen sample on it. Took all night at 300 baud for 8 seconds of really low quality sampling. Ahh the memories.

OMG..... The days.....
