If you're in the Atlanta area (Roswell, GA, to be specific) this weekend, just know that I plan on having my TI-99/4a system set up and running at the Vintage Computer Festival Southeast 5.0. My system includes the original black-and-silver console, the speech synthesizer, the program recorder, the PEB with 32k expansion card and two half-height Epson floppy drives, at least 10 command module game cartridges, and lots of documents and brochures - all of them working and available to play with. In addition, my colleague at The Atlanta Historical Computing Society, Jon, will be there, too, with modded-out units (including the F18A upgrade), along with examples of the new Break Free game and the new Don't Mess With Texas Megademo.

I hope to see you there, fellow TI-ers!

Make a good show!

We are always on the yearly Retrobörse / Retrofaire to represent the TI-99 Austria Usergroup.

I am always enjoying it but always exhausted at the end as well.

People were mostly impressed by seeing the old computer again after so long, and by the incredible picture quality you get from the F18A, by the tinyness of the nanoPEB and last time by the FlashRom99.

Some are always asking if you sell a console or some cartridges for their console, or they want a working Power supply. So if you come with car, count in for such requests.

Would be interested to know which documents/brochures you have in your collection. So please do some photos where they are visible.

Thanks, Klaus

Here's a picture of my TI setup last year at VCFSE 4.0. This year's setup will be essentially the same except that the interior of the showcase will be different, I'll have more games, and I'll also have a working TI CC-40 Compact Computer (no software with it, but I already have Hangman installed). And please ignore the short, fat and bald man in front of the display:

And here's a more detailed write-up of this year's TI display:

Experience the Texas Instruments TI/99-4a — Mark Little — Atlanta GA

This display celebrates the 36th year since the official introduction of the Texas Instruments 99/4a Home Computer (June 30, 1981 in Chicago), the home micro-computing market’s first true 16-bit machine. This interactive display includes: one working TI 99/4a console (classic silver/black) with a working Speech Synthesizer; one working TI Program Cassette Recorder; one working Peripheral Expansion Box with 32k Memory Expansion and two half-height floppy drives; one pair of original TI remote controllers (joysticks); at least ten command module (cartridge) games for anyone to play, including popular favorites Parsec, Munchman, and Buck Rogers (all in original boxes); and various software on 5 1/4″ floppy disks, manuals and books related to the TI 99/4a. In addition, take-one hand-outs are also available outlining the timeline of the TI 99/4a’s history, from its inception as an improvement to the beleaguered TI 99/4 in 1981, through to the price wars with Commodore in 1983 that forced its abrupt withdrawal from the home computer market in 1984. Finally, this year’s exhibit features a working Texas Instruments CC-40 Compact Computer, TI’s final home computer, which was manufactured for less than a year beginning in March of 1983.

And here is a write-up of my colleague's display:

TI-99/4A Modern developments — Jon — Dacula GA

This exhibit will showcase modern TI upgrades including:

  • Newer cartridge boards (ROM boards + UberGROM boards)
  • The F18 VGA Upgrade
  • The new TI Mega Demo (2017)
  • The TI Break Free cartridge
  • RASMUS Game compilation cartridge
  • The Nano PEB (not really new, but cool to show)
  • The HxC Floppy emulator on a TI

I revamped (really, I upgraded) the display a bit for this year's show. Here are this year's pics:

Attendance was great, met a lot of great people (many of whom were 99ers back in the day), and although I'm completely exhausted, it was a great and fun show.
Hope to see you there next year!
