hunter44102
I am getting back into Atari and like the Lotharek 1MB upgrade but have a few questions - 1 - which system would it work best in, 130xe or 800xl? soldering not an issue 2 - can I stack carts, like Basic XE + SpartaDos? So that BasicXE can have access to Sparta disks, etc. Would I plug in my real BXE cart or can I have two roms virtually with just the 1mb upgrade? 3 - Which supercart should I get to run cart roms? The side2cart seems overkill because I would have redundant sparta + RT clock since Ultimate 1mb already has it. thanks
flashjazzcat
1. Take your pick. If soldering was an issue, go for a socketed 800XL, but since it isn't... the U1MB works equally well in either machine. 2. You can only run 8KB external cart ROMs from the U1MB's internal flash (OK - with workarounds you can hack larger banked ROMs in there, but it's not easy), but there's no problem running Basic XE and/or stacked carts. 3. If you want to run banked ROMs, SIDE2 isn't your best option, but it is your best option if you want to run a hard disk off the U1MB's internal PBI ROM. There are some really nice carts out there, in particular Robin Edwards' (electrotrains) Ultimate SD Cart and UNO Cart. Check out some active threads on the forum for more information on these solutions.

hueyjones70
I just installed a 1MB upgrade to my 130XE and it appears to be working ok. The computer boots and installs the clock and Sparta Dos, unfortunately, I have no clue what to do now. What do I type on the screen to get something going. I don't have a SIDE2 or any of those other carts that go with the !MB. How can I get around the 1MB at this time and just use the 130XE as I did before. How can I use BASIC or run an ordinary game cart?
tjlazer
you can enable Basic and use it as before. You press HELP on a reset to enter the BIOS menu to make the changes! You might want to update the firmware to the new one created by FlashJazzcat which is a big improvement.
hueyjones70
That's just IT, I don't know how to enable basic. This thing comes with zero instructions. My screen has D1: and I don't know what I am supposed to type. I have pressed every key combination that I can think of.

hueyjones70
That worked, thanks. Which key combination is supposed to get me to the screen that lets me set up the system.

Mclaneinc
Jon, did I see you mention using the turbo freezer in the 1MB via Altirra? If so, how please? (I think I have the dump on my HD of the freezer but never seen it running, just curious) Thanks whatever the answer.. Paul..
flashjazzcat
No: I said that I'd be using the Freezer to debug the BIOS were it not for Altirra. The Turbo Freezer's functionality is more than covered by an emulator debugger, especially a debugger as good as Altirra's. As far as real hardware is concerned, the alt BIOS was specifically designed to work well with the Turbo Freezer.
hueyjones70
Found out via utube.

tjlazer
http://spiflash.org/node/14 Don’t the new boards have a work around to avoid hacking the motherboard? I didn’t do that on mine.
flashjazzcat
RD4/5 resistors are built into the newer boards, yes.
hueyjones70
Can you use an U1B and an APE Warp on the same computer.
flashjazzcat
A 32-in-1 board or the APE Warp OS itself? The 32-in-1: no, since both upgrades sit in the OS ROM slot. But there's no point in having both upgrades on the same machine. You could flash the APE Warp OS to an U1MB OS ROM slot.
Kyle22
But, what is the advantage of APE Warp OS if you already have High Speed SIO in the BIOS? I do divisor ZERO just fine using the BIOS and RespeQt.
+Nezgar
APE Warp OS SIO drivers are dated, yes. But if you are an APE PC software user, the Warp OS has additional functions to remotely control the APE host. Mount/swap/create disk images, etc. Actually that's probably part of the selection OS, so that function probably can't be used standalone...
