CDX caps quality

Hi!

Brought a working CDX a while ago, both cart and CD works fine.

Now, should I change the caps? How is the cap quality on the Genesis CDX?

I dont like to fix stuff that's working. There are a few exceptions that a cap change is really needed due to leakage, like the TurboDuo.

Are there any known big caps problems on the CDX that needs to take care of?

Well..I'm not sure about the CDX. I do own one myself that works, but have never attempted to crack it open and look. I know that recap kits are available for the CDX from console5 so it must be a thing for him to have a kit made up for them. I also know that the cdx uses SMD caps so given the time the CDX was made and around, I'm sure the caps are likely crappy.

I did a recap on my sega CD model 1 this weekend. The audio board and CD drive/laser assembly seemed okay using standard through hole caps of primarily rubycon and in the case of the Sony CD mech and laser, Nichicon caps. But the main Sega CD logic board?! Wow...it is using small SMD caps and they were leaking already. In fact I was able to literally pull half of them off the board with my fingers. They were just coming apart. I'm really suprised my Sega CD was even working honestly. So I was very glad to get that taken care of.

I guess see what other responses you get or check other forums with lots of Sega users and ask around? I never use my CDX because they are so expensive to get and are fragile beasts I'm told. So it mainly sits in my display case as a museum piece honestly.

Genesis isnt a primay system of mine, play it some.

I think the unit dont befefits of never being used either. If I look at all theese PC Engine CDROM2 drives that have laying around for 20 years. 1/20 works. Use it sometimes so you know its properly working. Cap leakage comes even if you are using it or not. If you dont discover its not functioning for years the leakage can become major.

Ordered a CDX cap kit from Console5 along with some others, there was only like 2 SMD ones in there. Think its the SMD ones from the 90ths that are a leak hazard.

Hope someone else can pitch in with some info on the CDX cap quality.

yeah..see I'm sheepish as all get out when thinking about cracking open my CDX. I do understand what was said that it will still leak from lack of use..and the belt on the drive mech will still wear out..etc. I guess for me it just isn't that convienent to use since my primary genesis is fully modded as is my 32x and I have it all attached to a model 1 sega CD that is MUCH easier for me to crack into when needed for the most part. But on a CDX everything is sandwiched in there and just little to no space. yeah...scares me to think about trying to open it up. I do agree that the caps needs to be replaced on them as I have heard much about them essentially requiring cap replacement just like the TG-16 and turboDuo units.
