JayAre
Hello, everyone. I just recently joined the forum, and this is my first post. Growing up, I never knew that adult games were available for the 2600. I just recently found out about them online. I can't imagine them having been sold at department or toy stores. Out of curiosity, where were these games sold? Does anyone remember? Thanks in advance for any responses.
+-^CrossBow^-
Apparently they were sold at most brick and mortar locations, but were kept under the counter and out of site to protect the youth back in the day. I never knew of the existence of these games either until much later around the late 90s when I started collecting again. I never knew anyone that had them back in the day so I was quite surprised to learn of them much later as well. My questions is...how did people know to ask for them at their local retailers if they weren't in view? I'm assuming the companies that made them must have advertised them back in the day in adult publications. Therefore only adults would have known about them? Anyone have any old PB or PH mags with Mystique ads...etc scanned in anywhere? I am curious to know how the games were marketed in the first place. JayAre
CB, thanks for the information. That's really interesting. And you bring up a good point about how consumers would have known about them. I'd be great to see the ads that you're referring to. Thanks again for the response.
Torr
I'd imagine a porn shop... most of the porn I bought in my life came from one. (or any store with the curtained off booth of "novelties") Or if mom & pop stores had them behind the counter they'd probably know their clientele well enough to know who to offer the new inventory too.
JayAre
Thanks, Torr. Maybe adult book stores too?

The only reason I was aware of them was I overheard a friend's parents talking about "Custer's Revenge". He thought it was funny, she thought it was awful and ridiculous. I could infer that it was an 'adult' game, but I couldn't understand at the time what General Custer had to do with porn.

I can flick through the 80s mags (Up to 1985 should be enough) at work. Maybe I'll find something, otherwise it's nice to see some gorgeous 80s girls again (They don't make 'em like that anymore). In Germany, X Man was advertised in the gaming magazine Tele Match to buy via mail order Edited May 16, 2017 by high voltage

See again, I never heard anything about it. I can tell you this though...they weren't advertised on the PB channel hehe. My buddies and I of course would switch to the non kiddie stations back then whenever left to our own devices. But I honestly don't recall ever seeing anything Atari related advertised then. So yeah I have to assume it was more than word of mouth. There are too many of them out there in circulation, they had to have additional advertisement from somewhere? Same with the Wizard games.... How did people know about them? Can't be that only video store owners knew of their existence. Again, there had to be some marketing behind them in order for adults back then to even know anything about them?
JayAre
I found this TV news report from Canada from back then regarding adult games. Very interesting..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiYnpdtWXC4
Hyperboy
I saw them in the adult bookstores. I think the local one was "Paperback Mart". Sent from my phrenologists waiting room.

BassGuitari
The games were pretty terrible anyway. They're of little value as video games, and of even less value as adult entertainment. Novelty is really all they were ever good for.
high voltage
Beat 'em and eat 'em is not a bad Kaboom clone. And, I love X Man, very crazy game. I like games with crazy stories: You are X Man, a great lover...hunted down by scissors, crabs and teeth. Beat 'em....soda slinger, ice cream, soda pop, fountain treats....I mean really? syn
I remember seeing Custer's Revenge at non chain store places. RKST (Radios, Knobs, Speakers and Things) had all sorts of neat things.
+Nathan Strum
Our local video store (Video Hut) carried them. They had video tapes for sale/rent, and sold video games (I got quite a few of my 2600 titles there). The "adult" 2600 titles were inside a glass cabinet, so you could see them, but not get to them without asking. I seem to recall the owner telling me they were terrible. They, like many other small video stores, were killed by Blockbuster.
matt2d2
The thing many people don't realize is that porn and adult material were not as restricted in some regards back then. Although HBO couldn't play rated R movies until after 10pm, I remember 7-11 and Mom & Pop convenience stores sold not only Playboy, but Penthouse, Hustler, and many other magazines that are not around anymore. Right there next to comic books in many cases. It was not hard to get those if you wanted them. It was also common to go to a repair shop for work on your car, and see porn on the walls. Whether it be a calendar with bare breasts or straight up centerfolds. The backwards "morality" that the religious zealots have forced on us since the Carter era is why now even Cosmo has to be bagged to make sure little Timmy doesn't see any side boob.

Atari PAC-MAN Fan
All those Atari 2600 porn games are just just terrible, but hilarious. I can't imagine that those were meant to be arousing. Who's is going to get excited over seeing pixel-lated Atari porn games? If there were people who actually did get aroused by Atari porn games, it just shows that they couldn't even get their hands on real porn. high voltage
Started to read Playboy, so far I found an Atari Touch Me review in issue 2 1980 (plus several other handhelds like Mattel Soccer reviewed). Touch Me in PB, very apt. The main opening picture is great though, obviously the couple just had great sex, and now they're relaxing with a game of Waddingtons Wizard. Blah, I'd do the girl again..... Edited May 21, 2017 by high voltage
Flojomojo
It took me five minutes to understand what PB and PH were supposed to stand for. Public Broadcast? Peanut Butter? Even when referring to the magazines, I'm pretty certain Playboy and Penthouse are just one word apiece. :-P I'll bet the copies sold in mom & pop "novelty" shops were priced high, and sold only to the very curious, very well heeled.
maiki
It took me five minutes to understand what PB and PH were supposed to stand for. That is the culture of internet communication. Not to follow grammar but shorten every second word so that smilies and corresponding nonsence can be used instead. I have been forced to search for these "abbreviations" dozens of times to understand what the hell they are talking about.

Where those ads scanned in from? Were they separate flyers or something? Again, I believe part of this thread is in trying to remember or figure out how one knew about these games back in the day. I myself was only about 8 years old when I got my Atari, and I certainly didn't have any idea these existed as I said, until much later in life. So that means that those who saw these in glass cases or knew about them being sold in their local adult bookstore are either a decade older than myself, or had very easy going parents?! Torr
I still remember when I found out about them. I was emulating with, I believe, Z26.EXE. I had downloaded a 5 part ROM set. The two that I remember seeing as the ZIPs uncompressed; MEGAMAN.BIN and XMAN.BIN Holy shit! Mega Man for Atari!!! Well, they DID do Marios Bros, Kung Fu, Double Dragon... why not??........ Oh... it's Megamania. <insert sad party blower sound effect> X-Man?? Was he even a character yet back in the Atari days? Why would HE get a game? Could they have made an X-MEN game and this is a typo? Lets see.... Wow... a giant, pixelated, nude chick running by... hahaha, oh my god, being chased by a giant pixelated nude fella with a boner!!! What the Hell is this?!?! I gotta call Reggie... (this was around 97-98, so, like a savage, I actually had to disconnect the internet and go down the hall and use the one that was corded to the wall, imagine that bullshit?)
