What would be the ideal/perfect CV Controller?

Recommended Posts

I say TWO.

1. Original Colecovision controller (I've always played games just fine with it and you need it for games like War Games).

2. An NES-like controller (sometimes all you really need is two buttons and a d-pad. A select button could change Skill levels).

When a player has the power of choice, he/she is satisfied.

I also like the original controller, but I can understand those who hate it

The original design is not very reliable as well

Interestingly enough, I actually do BETTER in the games with the original controller (most games, I should say). Cutting corners in Venture or Oil's Well with the original controller... no problem! I will admit that I do better in Smurf Rescue with a d-pad, however (but still good with the original).

Right now, I have a modded Sega Controller with a passthru connected to port 1 in the Colecovision. I do want to get a modded SNES keypad thingy for it. I'm a bit paranoid if I keep unplugging the controller port, I may somehow break that IC chip. So Sega modded controller with passthru with the ball-knob'd controller stay in that port.

I was filing away games the other day and discovered I had a Wico Command Control for the CV. I legit had no idea I had this or where I came across it... it just randomly spawned in the drawer, I guess. :D

I was hoping it was the answer to my controller conundrum... I have two or three controllers in reasonably fine condition... but I just never, ever liked the disc. Mine came with the little joystick adapter thingies attached... still not a fan. Thought the Wico would be right up my alley... but I found it to be fairly stiff and not very responsive. Ideally, a big arcade stick with a keypad and overlay would work for me.

I am liking the super action controller for its lack of thumb cramping and arcade-style ball-top joystick. Also, with four action buttons, when using emulation I don,t have to worry about the fire button setting off some other keyboard function since I can just switch to another button. Standard overlays no longer fit of course. That is about as flexible as you can get until they make a fight stick with a keypad controller for the CV. Was this what stalled out with Edladdin?

I have to give a shout out to Atariguy1021 for his amazing craftsmanship.

He has designed a board to fit perfectly into a Famicom Network controller. I have one of these, and one NTT Data controller. This D-pad truly transforms the playability of many CV games!

I would commission Atariguy for a run of these if possible.

Grisp also did this if I recall correctly

I've the exact same one, works like a charm!

There is a Wico Command Control for ColecoVision that looks good in idea, but it looks like it would be big and clunky. The keypad looks like it is on the wrong side to be convenient, like it would be awkward having to reach past the joystick. And although a lot of people seem to really like the bat style wico command control joystick for the atari 2600, i found the dead zone and range of motion too large for my liking. I am leery the joystick may be the same on this one. I like the ones you can twitch down in the hollow between your thumb and index finger.

Anyone found this better than this or something like it but better?

I had that controller at one point. HATED IT. Absolutely hated it. I liked the original Colecovision controllers much better. I also liked the Flashback controllers; I thought the shorter stick for the knob was a good idea. The best controller is probably a modification of the original Colecovision controller itself, however. The Wico was the worst. It will haunt my memories forever.

Edit: I have an Atari 7800 I haven't hooked up yet. The controls for that look terrible; I wouldn't be surprised if it's just as bad - or worse than - the Wico.

Thank for the warning. I had a Sears Video Arcade II controllers with a used console I bought that I thought would be great with a foosball krazy-glued to the stick. The stick and fire button response were crap, I tried it with a new old stock one and had the same issue. Maybe they need some cleaning/refurbishing, but I just went back to the CX-40 and suncom slik stik.

Just curious, has anyone tried the Spectravideo Quickshot III? It seems to be fairly rare. Has two exclusive fire buttons on the stick. It seems really bass-ackwards though, with the cord coming out on the player side.

The SpectraVideo QuickShot III controller is another failed attempt at a replacement controller for the ColecoVision. Stay away from this one unless you are a collector.

I have an unused boxed one for sale if anyone's interested. I agree with NIAD though, it's not a good controller.
