Switch physical sales vs digital

Glad to hear that. I only download digital when no physical version is available, and more often than not, if a physical version of a previously digital title is released, I keep it sealed on my shelf.

On Switch, I may make a few exceptions and download a few. The kids want that Snipperclips game, and I want to get World of Goo.

Japan might be a bit different than the US, though. In Japan, people still mostly buy their music on CD, for example.

Exactly. I'd be much more interested in a study that looks at physical versus digital in the United States. I bet the numbers are much more skewed towards digital over here.

With you 100%. I have an extensive eShop and VC collection spread across consoles. World of Goo is an excellent title and they did a stellar job porting it to Switch. Also the original release was the first WiiWare game ever to receive a 10/10 on NintendoLife. The game uses the touch screen undocked and the gyro sensors take the place of Wiimote + sensor bar in docked mode, though they do drift somewhat over time as you play you can center the cursor at any time. No sensor bar required.

Little inferno is also a great time waster which I rather enjoyed during the Wii-U launch drought.

You may have a point, judging by CD sales still being huge in Japan, with downloads/streaming occupying just a tiny percentage of the market.

Pity Best Buy just pruned their CD selection down from 3 isles to just half an isle, which royally upset me since they had the biggest selection after FYE folded up and left town. Now I think Target has more shelf space dedicated to CDs but about the same otherwise as they are sparcely populated and mostly new artists or exclusives.

I do love vinyl as well but flipping records is a PITA plus the turntable is in my bedroom and I only got one turn table so I need to use an FM transmitter kit to stream music to the living room. I should really buy a second turntable, but the nice ones like the Audio Technica LP-120 with adjustable tone arm and direct drive are pricey. Don't ever buy the rubbish USB powered junk.

Given the tendency for Japan to charge a mint for a lot of their stuff, I'd wonder if they get anywhere near as many or as steep sales in the digital market. As a large amount of digital sales in NA are from the flash sales, steam sales, humble bundles, etc.

Its hard to find real data on USA physical/digital sales. But I did find this statement from EA.

They say that by end of 2016 digital sales of games on Ps4/xbox1 will be nearing 30%.

But I'd still like to see some data for some specific titles.

Do you seriously buy music from FYE or Best Buy, or are you just complaining about times gone by? It's not like the mall/box stores know anything about music, or let you listen to stuff.

Never really bought music from Best Buy. But i continue to buy cd's and vinyl from FYE. My local FYE has very knowledgeable employees and you can even listen to an album by scanning the upc and put on the headphones by the scanner.

I never pay full price for digital downloads. Hell, I rarely even pay 50% off. Humble Bundle, Bundle Stars, GOG and Steam sales are the way to go.

Kosmic, sometimes your behavior is a mystery to me. Do you seriously buy music from FYE or Best Buy, or are you just complaining about times gone by? It's not like the mall/box stores know anything about music, or let you listen to stuff.

Sometimes I just like to browse the selection and walk out with something I may not have picked up otherwise. There's a wonderful used vinyl shop in my town as well that I like to frequent, and they do let you preview vinyl before purchase. ;-)

Last one closed at the mall a couple years ago. Then Hastings in the next town gave up the ghost. CD stores are all but gone here. And Radioshack as of yesterday... :_(

The BB here isn't as small as a half isle, but it's not like 3-4 like it was some years ago.

Either way I don't remember Japan ever breaking down digital/physical either, kind of nice to see. Impressive Nintendo has 9/20 spots on that list, and they're all in the top half but one and I think that was #11. I'd be curious to see if the more guarded fools of the industry here would allow that digital lease copies moved number get squeezed out too vs the physical.

I still like the Japanese buy physical CDs, but then I make my own MP3s of them. :)

TEchnically it's one isle, one side. I count an "isle" as both sides. We can argue over semantics all we want but very recently they have significantly downsized their CD collection, and without an FYE to browse anymore, it makes me a sad panda.

http://nintendotoday.com/nintendo-dominates-japanese-game-sales-charts-for-april/

I don't recall sales charts breaking down physical v digital before.

This is a Japanese list, but interesting all the same. Physical still sells a ton more than digital. We need more.

You also have to look at the system in question. There's actually less incentive to go digital on Switch because, as of right now, there's no way to use what you purchased on more than one Switch system. That's not true on PC, Xbox One, or PS4, so it makes a lot more sense to go digital on those platforms (and the sales split backs that up, although to state the obvious on the PC side, there really is no physical option anymore). In fact, I just bought my third Xbox One over the weekend, an Xbox One S, to use on the modest 4K TV in our bedroom, and I was able to get up and running (and access to all my digital content) in no time at all once I logged in with my account. Although I'd like to buy a second Switch since my daughters like to use it a lot, I'm hesitant until I can have some confidence at least my digital purchases will be usable on more than the one system (and obviously the same account(s)).

Frankly, I consider the cartridge thing a necessary evil on the Switch. I'd much rather it be all digital. As it is, I have to go to the trouble of physically switching games. I know that sounds silly, but it's an inconvenience to my limited play time and something I don't have to worry about with digital. The older I get, the more I seem to prize convenience over physical ownership of an object.

We got a FYE back here a couple years ago, and your description of the amount of CDs that BB has is the same, a front and back situation and little else and much into that ends up being USED turn ins. Don't feel too bad.

So your FYE went to the crapper in terms of CD selection too? When we still had one at the mall a couple years back, they had about equal floor space for music and movies. One day I was nosing around in the adult / hentai section, peeking behind the white bunny cards they placed over the movies so as not to offend people, not really looking to buy anything either, until I looked up and realized the red headed cashier was actually a lady from our church. I think I grabbed a couple random CDs and some trashy used Lampoon's movie (the newer ones aren't even worth watching besides the classics like the vacations and animal house) and checked out. We exchanged out how-dee-dos and she gave me this little smirkish look that conveyed "I saw you back there looking in the smut section" and even though she didn't say anything, I knew she caught me peeking... :dunce:

Yup and went to a far smaller location totally across the mall. The one that had been there over a decade was in a huge mall end area that was massive, like the size of 4-5 normal sized spots and it had rack after rack of movies, games, and a lot of CDs and some vinyl. The existing one is like 20% the size and most of it is toys, posters, lowbrow electronics, fanboy (of some series) related crap, and a lot of (as always) overpriced movies.

Hah got busted by Church Lady. I saw that... satan!

It's nice to see some physical copies of things are still selling. Some of us aren't so privileged to have the right connections or to be able to afford the subscriptions to do download content all the time. Personally, I find our modern, iPhone and download obsessed society to be annoying anymore. To me, everything is now a hassle and super boring. As for FYE, ours here has really cut down on the CD and DVD selection in the past year. Vinyl selection has gone up, which I am fine with, but there's also a lot of just crap in their stores now. Oddly, the receipts from our FYE still have the old 'Record Town' logo printed on the top!

Privileged? I understand that a small percentage of people don't have access to high speed Internet, but if you have money to buy games, you probably have money to pay for select subscriptions. Both PSN and XBLG cost about the same as a single AAA game a year and you get access to much more than a single game. A subscription to EA Access on the Xbox One, for instance, is half that price for the year.

As someone who overdid the physical ownership thing to the nth degree, I find the modern option to go download-only to be extraordinarily liberating.
