Matterhorn #8? First NIB

Recommended Posts

And this is the german version (with german manual and box with german stickers)... ;-)

Now you have to find the english/american version (with english manual and box)... ;-)

... search to be continued (for another 15+years)...

This is the only version that was offered. See the back of the box is in English. The cart is in English. This cart was only distributed in Germany. We've only seen carts, and the insert advertisement that came in the TigerVision boxes. I'll get mine out from my Espial CIB has it too and scan.

Nice to see it uncovered again even though stupid watermarks covers stuff up though... also, there were at least 8 United States (Genuine NTSC, not international) copies of Matterhorn in circulation, though the web has a way of making it all such a mystery, I often wonder where such information gets born.... it is funny how every 6 or so years Matterhorn re appears as a topic though... in any event. Play it in emu or favorite cartridge solution. I am certain Youtube will have play throughs, people posting videos to supplement their ebay sale or such over the years.. slowly getting them out to the masses as time goes by...

It very nice to see it complete and in Excellent condition...

You think that just because you've seen the cart that makes those NTSC, and this one is not. There is only one cart. There is no international version.

The cart is EXACTLY the same. I have a loose version in addition, also brought to the US.

The box is US. It was distributed in Germany, hence all the stickers on it.

These are found in Germany! I've been informed by a good source, they ALL originated there and slowly made there way to the US.

I watermarked it, I'm getting sick of these ass holes knocking off the box artwork, etc. in attempt to make copies. Yes it doesn't stop them.

And somehow that prevents you from enjoying the image. If you want to see it without a watermark, go look at in the Tigervision promo sheet.

I marked it as #8, it very well could be #9.

I posted this as I love Atari home computer cartridges. From when I started coding on my Atari 400, I loved the art work, and everything about them. I couldn't afford many though.

I still remember my friend got Miner 2049'r and I borrowed it almost permanently since it was my favorite. Then a few years ago I got a boxed Miner 2049'r. That was awesome. You can still smell the 1980's.

To have something that is 30+ years old and still be packaged, is still amazing to me.

I now have what I think is the largest cart collection in the world and this Matterhorn is by far the most rare I've ever seen. It's the hunt, deals, challenges, that makes collecting the most fun. And stressful at the same time.

I get excited about this stuff. Not as a race but as a journey.

I found this cartridge (and some more :) ) in a small German town. My thought was wow, this can't be true. It took 40 days to receive, as it was held in customs. I really thought it was too good to be true.

But it finally made it.

My loose copy ended up somehow on a US base in Germany in a storage locker. It was found by someone on base and I ended up getting it though $$$ and a trade.

:)

Are the stickers on the box or the wrapper.....or both?

If the cartridge works in both NTSC and PAL someone should look at the code to see if it adjusts timing or colors depending on machine it runs in.... you know some programmers actually did that correctly.... If it is all in English with German added stickers... what makes you think it wasn't coded for the UK or US? I'd love to see all those knock off boxes and cartridges out there... I haven't seen any yet... if they duplicated it right down to the cartridge shell, That would be crazy good! maybe we could contact the counterfeiter and get a lead on new Atari cartridge shells... or the injection molding house doing them for him.... The minimum run to make a good cartridge run almost always dictated a larger number of carts... It's possible cases of em are sitting around somewhere.... who knows maybe they are in a dump somewhere.... but these things tend to get found or dug up eventually....

in any event the cycle will continue.. another 7 years or so...

I have not met a PAL Atari 8-bit commercial cart. :)

They are all NTSC.

It is my understanding, and granted I'm no expert, that Atari changed the hardware to take advantage of PAL code, but that is commercial cassettes and disks written for PAL.

http://www.atarimania.com/faq-atari-400-800-xl-xe-what-issues-surround-ntsc-vs-pal-versions-of-the-8-bit-atari_16.html

http://www.ataripreservation.org/websites/freddy.offenga/megazine/ISSUE5-PALNTSC.html

So for this cart. Tigervision produced English cartridge labels and boxes, then apparently a German instruction guide for the German distributor. In which it was the only distribution country for these (read some posts).

They are stickers on the box, there was no wrap. My guess is because the distributor needed to open it.

And in Germany look at the Thorn cartridges, same US labeled cartridge, different packaging and instructions as example. I can't speak for Ravensburger yet.

As for duplicating the boxes, I get requests often for high res images of carts, etc. And I've seen the 2600 side, many that look EXACTELY like the originals. No markings that they are reproductions, etc. The boxes are incredible. Why is it so unimaginable that someone could take a Springer cart and convert it to Matterhorn. Eventually they will try.

And for some reason, I can't tell if you're trying to insinuate that this is some sort of knock off or what your doing. And you keep discrediting and down playing the find.

Cartridges are always found, and this is my find, today. And boy is it nice.

God forbid anyone say anything... let alone allow anyone else who might come along with any question of any kind... a comparison of carts couldn't have hurt anyone.... way over top protective attitude... Nothing wrong with the find... it's your second one? I thought it was nice...

Just remember your not the only person on the planet to have a copy.. and if it bothers you that would be your problem. I am not going one step further with it. That should make you very happy..... don't forget to kick me or the dog, and maybe the cat for that matter...

Still glad you got your original back from a locker all these years later, especially with how often those lockers change hand....cool as h*ll

and again very cool to find a pristine complete boxed unit, here's to finding another and another...

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 9 months later...

Only 999 USD for a 15 year search! Let me calculate this, thats 999:15 = 66.60 dollars per year of search (and 5.55 dollars per month of search). Good to know, will take that price for all my A8 epay games then... ;-)

On the other hand, why search for ages (or decades) for a certain game, only to sell it (fast) then ?!? Strange, really strange...

Yup....I could imagine at some time down the line you might want / need to sell but straight away after such a time does not sit well with me.

Also the statement that its the only one in the world is potentially misleading as this is based on 'as far as he knows' which really should be on the same line..

that is explained in the Market Place.

but I shouldn't have to, that is what I hate about this site, the people with all their wonderful insight to why a person should or should not sell something that they own.

@Albert: As we discussed before, If you or anyone else knows of someone that wants to buy a collection please let me know.

No, I'll admit its badly worded, I mean as in its not something I'd do, your cart, you do what you like with it....Just seems odd to get rid of it so soon after you found it.....Most of the folk in here also collect but they love the stuff they collect and would never want to sell it unless they really had to, I guess it just feels a bit cold after just getting it.

As for the only one in the world, its a bit of a claim, there's lots of collectors out there who do the same as you, I'd have used 'probably to only one in the world' but again, its your advert..

Apologies for the wording, I did not mean any control by it...

Bit harsh that, you used the forum for an advert that should be elsewhere and then say you hate the site..

Also, you posted in a forum, not an advert place so its all up for discussion as are most things in a forum, you can't suppress peoples opinions just because you want to make a buck or several. I'm not being rude, just pointing out the fact its a forum, you also have a choice..

Just chill out, no one is stopping you from selling it or doing a crafty link, just relax and take the rough with the smooth..

really, wow, now you're saying I hate the site.

I actually said "that is what I hate about this site". That would mean - the idiots that just reply to just about every post without ever really contributing.

Start taking your own advice.

I would never say something like"but straight away after such a time does not sit well with me", who the %$!*# cares that it doesn't sit well with you.

Are you buying it. No. Do you collect carts. No.

You have an issue with words, if you say "what I hate about the site" then it determines that there's hate about the site"..DOH...

When you say its the only one in the world its pure buck grabbing fiction, I was trying to help you by saying that claiming its the only one in the world might just back fire IF you sell it and another person puts one up, as the buyer I'd be well pissed off that I was lied to but you looking for the big bucks ignore that chance and go for the cash.

Again, you don't know if I collect carts but big balls atari8bits carts speaks and he must be heard...Sigh, another huge bag of gas on the forum looking to be the big I am....Just use the auction part if all you want to do is sell, this forum is for Atari enthusiasts, not people just looking to get prices and post advert..

Will I buy it, LOL...at that price....Out of your mind and a rather dubious statement in the advert...No thanks, I'd rather flush my money down the toilet...NEXT...One for the IGNORE list methinks, and that's two people so far...

Now I'm a liar.

You have issues, deep ones.

You're constant misrepresentation of what I say, who I am, and just generally replying to almost all topics just doesn't sit well with me.

And now you're saying Atari cartridge collecting is a worthless hobby in which you'd rather flush your money down the toilet.

Well, it is a bit weird that you are searching for this cartridge in box a very long time and then you decide to sell it. Ofcourse you can sell what you want, it is none of my business, but I can understand that others (including me) think it is weird.

I have never investigated the Matterhorn cartridge, but looking at the packaging with the professionally produced German stickers and the German manual it is quite hard to believe that only one complete in box copy exist. Teldec (a large German record company) distributed games and when you are saying that they used the US packaging, it is hard to believe to make stickers and German manuals for just one copy. I found some reviews of the game in German magazines.

I agree with Mac that stating that only one complete copy exist can back fire. And this is a public Atari forum, everyone is allowed to have an opinion of your Ebay auction since you posted it here ;)

Good luck with the sale. I see that you already have one bid
