New Atari Console that Ataribox?

It would be a lot more interesting to me if the fugly shell actually served a purpose. It's possible I don't feel nostalgia for the "breadbox" case like others might.

I would think that anyone who could work a C64 could follow these simple instructions and roll their own while waiting for the C64 mini. They might find that they already have what they wanted, and more.

The Pi Lizard's C64 image, with working modem

Combian64 - readymade C64 image

I haven't done this myself, but Pi Lizard's setup seems like the one to beat.

Hmm. I'll have to look into that.

Regarding the Raspberry Pi and C64, I've just built a 1541 disk drive emulator on a Raspi Model 3B+ for my real-deal Commodore 64.

It perfectly replicates the old 1541 drive by emulating the 6502 and some other stuff.

See https://cbm-pi1541.firebaseapp.com/ for more on Pi1541.

1. How did you build it?

2. Does it also work with the VIC-20?

I Have a couple Retropie setups and I think I like fiddling around with them more than actually playing anything.

That seems to be the thing for most people into the Retropie, they seem to spend most if not all of their time tweaking it and loading every rom in existence and then re-imaging it. Once I got a stable image of my setup 3 years ago I haven't had a need to tweak anything and spend 100% of my Retropie time actually playing the games :)

Maybe they're performing maintenance? Though it's still business hours in Paris. Maybe Tin Giant has taken over their website duties.

hahahahahahahahaha

so Atari will reopen their website soon with an untouched TYPE-3 taco shop template?

It's almost a month after the campaign ended and they finally gave an official word on the joystick/paddle combination. Let the "it was just wishful thinking" begin!

OMFGBBQ that is not a good answer. Especially when their website goes down immediately afterwards. Memorialized here for the long form journalists to write about next year. :lolblue:

As for the "twist," this is what happens when your marketing gets ahead of your engineering. Who used the word "twist?" Atari did, of course.

I'll paste the text here so we can search on it later. I'll bet IGG won't let them change it. :lolblue: I've noticed that the person answering IGG questions refers to "Atari" in the third person, rather than "we" or "I."

Hi Matt and backers. As of today, Atari has only expressed "wishful thinking" about that feature. We have thus far made no official confirmation of this. The "twist" referred to in the headline is about the modernization and illuminated surfaces.

Their "wishful thinking" statement is the most incompetent nonsense I've heard from an ostensibly professional organization since "Coleco is back."

That "COLECO is Back" title was added at the last minute by our PR firm. And I guess we can all debate what "Back" means. In a sense it is back. Even if in name only. The future of what that means remains to be seen. If this product, with the COLECO name on it, becomes a success at some level, then what will that mean? Is it "back" then? Is there a future in that brand to bring out or lend their name to other "new" products? I really don't think most are reading much more into it other than, "Hey, it would be cool to see that brand name back on a new product." The Chameleon will be the first "new" forward thinking product to adorn that brand name and none of us know where it could take the brand. It was never our intention to indicate this was anything but a licensing deal.

Maybe they canceled the website "to make it even better!"

But seriously, they should just borrow Tin Giant's generic template, complete with the sandwiches and the hipster coffee.

Their "wishful thinking" statement is the most incompetent nonsense I've heard from an ostensibly professional organization since "Coleco is back."

Considering the odds stacked against them, everything they've ever said about "that Ataribox?", and all their future plans for it, could be considered "wishful thinking."

Has Atari.com ever been taken completely offline? When Hasbro took over the domain they redirected it to their website, but the name's always led to something, hasn't it?

I've actually seen it offline or loading really slowly on various days during the last year, though never this long. I figure they're trying to revive GeoCities as their next zombie IP.

Gee, time flies doesn't it? I kinda like how this thread turned out anyway, even in total absence of any real news related to the OP itself. It became kind of sarcastic meta-chat about crowdfunding, food, other tech and life in general :)

You can get the Raspi from the usual sources (I recommend Pimoroni for all your Pi needs).

I got the ribit hat from this ebay sale. He sells them as kits or ready assembled boards.

I bought mine in kit form. You need to be able to solder very small surface mounted components - not a beginner's project.

I don't know about VIC-20 support, but I suspect not. See the link I posted before.

This is what I've been saying. They can't even demonstrate a working 4 way stick let alone decide if it has a paddle function or not. Oy vey!

So far I don't know a single IEC device intended for the C64 - both old and new - that doesn't work on the VIC-20. If the Pi1541 would be the first device ever to somehow be incompatible, that would be an achievement. Actually I've read about people elsewhere use it with both, so I don't think that is an issue. The soldering might though, although Ribit also offers pre-manufactured hats on their own website.
