ASRock Announces iBox-R1000 AMD-Powered 'NUC'

AMD R1000 series, like the Ataribox. No price or release date. Made of an extruded aluminum top and a metal bottom. 6.76 x 5.91 x 2.75" (171.8 x 150 x 69.8mm).

The presence of the COM port suggests that this thing is designed for sticking in factories where you might potentially need one to talk to an antiquated piece of machinery.

Swap it out for a couple of old school joystick ports and you've got a better retro gaming box than anything Atari is ever likely to make though. Nice work ASRock.

This is what I'v been suspecting ever since the cpu change. Atari finally figured out they are not going to be able to pull off a custom board and decided to just put in an off the shelf (though new) embedded design in the cheapened-up shell. The removal of the sd slot is also a red flag for me. The board they want to use (cheapest one they can get their hands on) didn't have it, so they just dropped...no biggie...it was just a promised feature. It'll run linux easy, just slap a custom front end on it and call it a day. I would suspect the exact board that ends up in the faux box...if it does come out...will be available retail for a fraction of what backers paid. In the end, pretty much all they are going to get is a fancy case, though much less fancy than the case they thought they were buying.

I hope I'm wrong to be honest, I'd prefer the backers don't get cheated. It just seems to me that using off the shelf parts is the only way they are going to have any chance at actually delivering a product and I'm far from sold they can pull even this off.

almost all motherboards still have a com port, but usually its just a header, even my brand new MSI gamer blah blah blah AM4 board has a com port

and since I work in a factory full of antiquated machinery, com port's are not really that common

I wouldn't say that they're common, but there are enough multi-million dollar machines with them around that are going to have to be well and truly run into the ground before anyone thinks of buying the newer model that comes with a USB port or Ethernet.

And yes, you can add one to a regular desktop PC for the price of a $5 plate and cable but they're a relatively rare sight on a NUC.

every nuc I have ever seen has them, they are usually just not populated / broken out, but its still a place on the board for them and they do work

I was under the impression that in order to demo hardware, you had to have hardware to demo.

Then again, building an x86/x64 Linux box is a complicated drinking game, from what I am given to understand.

May PlaysWithWolves is clairvoyant and the link he gave is their new dev system... except....

That iBox 1000 will exist....

More like "don't write checks you can't cash," I think. Wasn't that guy wishcasting for a GDC appearance, too? We know how that turned out -- they showed even less than the prior year, when they brought an empty case and dumb answers to the hotel across the street from the show.

was that comment deleted already from the IGG page? Last one I see is about 'how many players/controllers supported'.

Yep. The Rainfactory Redaction Regiment is always on duty.

Side note: for a moment there, I thought Max had come up for air and was breathing again. Seems he's slid back under the Kool-Aid.

Of course, it's possible that he could be the greatest taco thread sleeper agent ever. And if he was that good, even we wouldn't know.

Was he the same joker who was like, "deal with google, confirmed!" Because that wasn't doing the project any favors. Better to set expectations closer to something they might deliver. Slow pc, amd inside, Atari Vault. Controller sold separately.

Atari: better late then never. That's our story and we're sticking to it.
