New Atari Console that Ataribox?

I suppose I want another console manufactures because I'm bored with what the current ones are offering. Too much like PCs.

Of course, if someone else were to enter the market, they'd probably offer something similar. :(

I don't think there will ever be a mainstream retro console like you're seeking. In order to play the widest variety of games, you need reasonably up-to-date technology, and with reasonably up-to-date technology, it can easily do other things, so why not do them? Very few people ever clamor for FEWER features with anything, let alone videogame consoles. And it's not like any of the extra features distract from playing or getting more games. The big three consoles have no shortage of games of every type in every category. If they didn't do the media or online stuff, it wouldn't mean there would be more games available.

And if you're asking to go back to a time when games weren't patched, that's not going to happen either. That's a feature, not a bug, as they say, and has been the reality for decades now. Just because some companies abuse that option doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I also struggle to see the complaint with online connectivity as some people like to make. Everything is connected these days, and that will only continue to expand.

Anyway, I'd be curious what you're after. If you want a modern console, there are three fantastic options to choose from right now. If you want a vintage-style console, the old ones still work and still get new games released for them, no online connectivity, media features, or patching available. We have nothing if not an embarrassment of options for every mood or desire.

I don't mind media features, online connectivity, or even patching.

I do mind installing games, & having to download patches to get a game to work. That takes up time I could use for playing.

I suppose at this point the difference between a PC & a console are too small for me to care about. If I can't run a game as soon as I get home from the store I might as well stick with a computer. :)

You are in luck. Opcode is making a new console called the Omni. It's not pc based, but rather using mid 80's components.

In case you haven't heard about OMNI and is a little lost, OMNI is our new 8-bit system. It is a brand new system with old school hardware, capabilities in line with tech available around 1985/1986. The case/cartridge/controller is being designed by Ted Mayer, from Intellivision II and III fame, and we will have playable demo stations available during this year PRGE and RWX. More info to come.

I think Power Stone is the one that i'm most salty and/or disappointed about that nothing became of it beyond the Dreamcast besides a PSP re-release , because that one is a ton of fun and I think it would have a much bigger chance of success in this day and age with the whole esports thing going on and Smash Bros has exploded in popularity (Smash was always popular no doubt, but it seems like each year it just keeps on growing and growing) And Power Stone is from Capcom after all, where as if it was from a much smaller or lesser known developer it would be a lot more difficult to pull it off.

Skies of Arcade is fantastic, but we do have a lot of Final Fantasy-esqe RPG's out there, whereas for "arena fighting" games, it's a significantly smaller pond which mostly consists of just Smash Bros.

However, while Sega isn't themselves doing things with them, Sega has been notoriously even handed with their IP's,in as much as if fans want to do unauthorized sequels, remakes or whatever, as long as the efforts arent pornographic or distasteful, Sega has adopted a "go for it!" attitude.

nintendo and nutacotari could learn a lot from Sega.

It's such an odd thing w/ SEGA tho; I mean, recently they brought back Daytona, which was something of a mixed bag (AM1 nor AM2 did not handle that game, it was the Amusement division so that explains a lot), but it did get a patch update for the deadzone issues and getting updated releases in a smaller cab. They're also bringing back House of the Dead which looks great frankly, a spiritual followup to Super GT/Scud Race in World Driver's Championship (it's not as exaggerated as that game was tho, which I kinda miss), the recent Virtual-On and they're starting dev on a new Sakura Taisen.

So it's pretty clear they're at least somewhat trying to focus on legacy IP now that isn't just Sonic, but SEGA has it harder than most others simply b/c of the sheer amount of IP they actually have. Like, where's Virtua Fighter? Where's Panzer Dragoon? Where's Ristar? Pulseman? Eternal Champions even? Or Super Monkey Ball? A new Chu Chu or Space Channel 5 would work as small(ish) digital downloads on Switch and PC. I can kind of understand no Outrun 3; the license'd have to be paid for and racing games as a whole don't do the numbers they used to on consoles; even GT Sport is having a rough time and that's friggin Gran Turismo.

You're right tho; they're usually pretty friendly w/ fan-made stuff as long as it isn't doing some crazy stupid stuff. Then again, they did shut down that Streets of Rage 4 fan game and...still nothing with that IP xD.

Sega's adoption of Christian Whitehead was pure genius, and I hope the relationship is making everyone lots of money. I like how they've ported those games to just about every current platform. Sonic Mania is what was needed all along, and I think Sega's leadership understands that.

"Sega Forever" had a rough start, but seems like an effort to deliver what we want. I think they said they'd be working on some bigger games soon, so this is where Skies of Arcadia would first appear if it comes back. I think it would work great on mobile. It's much harder to rework a Gamecube or Xbox game than it is to convert a Genesis ROM.

At least in the case of AM2R, Nintendo was already working on Samus Returns, which is cool.

There's so much product out there I can't get too bummed about companies holding things back, especially if they're working to make better versions of the oldies on many different platforms.

Agreed that we have enough console (and mobile) platforms. A "new Sega console" would just be a resource drain, a money pit for the company.

Yeah, I don't know why people keep asking for a new Sega console (tho I don't think the number doing that seriously is that massive); personally I like the aesthetics on their systems more than others, especially modern systems, but there's no logistical reason for a new Sega console these days. Everyone's gonna move to digital anyway; they should just do a digital platform for all past and future content, make it sub-based even, like a Steam or GOG but for their content in particular (but still roll out those games to those platforms, obviously).

Would like if Atari, SNK, etc. did the same, it's more workable than a mini-console and can reach more people especially if also on mobile. Atari in particular, it could be a great way to get the console, arcade and microcomputer stuff out there, provided they handle it seriously and better than this VCS campaign's been going. But specifically w/ the Forever service, they probably need to rebrand and promote it again, I forgot all about the damn thing. Wonder if they've even started putting Saturn and Dreamcast stuff up there.

Virtua Fighter 2 is on PS3/Xb360, and the Xbox version works on Xbone now. The lousy Genesis version shows up on retro collections too.

Panzer Dragoon's source code is lost, and the PC version of the first game doesn't hold up that well. It's playable inside PD Orta, which is downloadable on XBone.

Ristar is in Sega Forever on mobile and is always in the Genesis collections.

I don't know what Pulseman is

Eternal Champions is silly but the cartridge version has been on AtGames clones

Super Monkey Ball Sakura Edition was recently updated (after like 4 years of neglect) and re-released on iOS under Sega Forever

Chu Chu is probably out there somewhere

Space Channel 5 Part 2 is on PS3/Xb360/Steam and I too would love a new Space Channel 5, with or without Michael Jackson. They probably need some special expertise to do it well. We got a VR version of REZ in the meantime.

I think Sega is doing OK with the retro fan service if you pay close enough attention. The M2 releases on 3DS are wonderful, everyone should play those.

I agree that there isn't any logical reason for Sega to go back to making home consoles again. o u o

At the same time though, I have no interest in the PS4 or Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch is the best out of the three, but Nintendo have strange business practices that I don't like, and they're generally very cold towards fans, sending DCMA notices to people making free fan projects and streaming their games on YouTube, etc. Nintendo is actually single-handedly destroying the emulation scene as we know it. The Switch, while a decent system with a unique concept, doesn't actually do a whole lot for a $300 device. People shelling out that kind of money usually would expect a tablet device to be able to go on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and the Switch does none of that (it has very limited social networking functionality and that's it). A lot of people just want a normal gaming console from Nintendo.

I'm actually very much on pacman000's side when it comes to console gaming. Console's have gotten so complex that they're basically like PC's in special little boxes. You have to worry about updates, downloads, running out of disk space, initial setup, installing the games, having a decent internet connection, navigating the menus, etc. At that point, I might as well just use a PC. And that's exactly what I decided to do. Lol. > w <

I much preferred the way Sega did their hardware over any other console maker. They were as innovative as Nintendo, but also put effort into making a powerful console. They had their share of adult-centric games but they also had plenty of IP's with bright, cartoony graphics like Nintendo. Sega were really diverse in their game libraries-- they didn't just stick to a certain audience or certain genres. Hopefully someday Sega Forever evolves into a platform like Steam. Then in a way it would almost be like they're getting back to maintaining their own platform again.

My son helped his mother with the grocery shopping, and when they came back home, I was helping them unload. Guess what I saw in one of the bags... the shells, the meat, the seasoning, the cheese, etc

Its TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACO time for the household!

Gonna head to Del Taco soon!

I suppose, lol. They havent finished doing it yet, but theyre in the process. They sent emuparadise and isozone notices, and they're complying. Its legal for Nintendo to do this, but its still crappy of them

I'm having trouble reconciling Lodmot's views on Nintendo and pc-like consoles with his love of sue-happy Atari and a 32GB AtariVCS with likely no streaming apps. Talk about having to delete files to make room!

LOL, Ive already said a few times that I wished Sega was doing it. I like the idea, and I like the atari brand and i appreciate it for what it is, but i dont "love" the new console. If rather support it than the big 3, but only because its not the big 3 and its an older brand from yesteryear

Much of the ROMS from ISO. zone have been re-uploaded and are intact and available under new varied file hosting links over at retrozone .co ;) Much of the community have relocated as well as ISO. zone will completely cease at some point while many including myself still use the forums there until such time.

;) Note, I put spaces on my site addresses and did not link for obvious reasons, if my post is still not allowed I understand if it is removed or edited accordingly.
