Pikachu919
I recently picked up a 1040ST with original box and upon turning it on, I am greeted with a lovely 20 bombs across the screen So I opened up the computer and reseated all the chips, and saw a few solder connections that looked suspect and re-flowed those, but nothing has changed. I will attach pictures of the board later when I am home from work. Has anyone had this issue before that did not go away after reseating the chips? ParanoidLittleMan
Well, things are that your 1040ST is now about 30 years old. So, the answer is yes - a lot of people had issues. First thing to check/replace are capacitors in PSU. If you don't know what I'm talking about better bring it so some HW service man, someone who fixes computers, electronic devices. Pikachu919
I'm pretty handy with HW stuff, so I will start there with the PSU and check it with my multimeter. Also, since the computer just requires a 12v and 5v line on the main board, is it possible I could use a power supply from another Atari computer and just tap off the lines coming out? I imagine I could
leech
20 bombs? Don't think I've ever seen that many. In theory the number of bombs should tell you what error it is having. My old Mega STe didn't even give me that. Gave me a lovely white screen, so power was working, and even video output worked, but I couldn't get it to do more than that. I think even the sound was working.
Pikachu919
Yeah, it shows up immediately with 20 bombs; no pauses in-between any specific number, just a white screen with 20 bombs. I will be getting around to it probably in an hour or so probing the power supply and making sure the voltages coming off are correct. However, if the power supply was malfunctioning, wouldn't there be no picture or anything on the screen?
Ayreon
Information about bombs can be here here: http://www.atariarchives.org/cfn/13/0222.php No Info on 20 bombs though. Must mean something they didn't want the world to know.

I also used a power supply from an SF354 floppy drive as it has both the 12V and 5V output and I got the same result with both, the 20 bombs. This is just one giant mystery to me! Pikachu919
I came across a website dedicated to the Atari ST line, I'm hoping their forum can help me shed some light on these bombs! I will report back any interesting info!
rustynutt
Isn't something with that many bombs a ROM bus error ?
