Swami
I'm a little puzzled by what I see online for replacement AC adapters for my XEGS. They are 5V 2.0A, versus 5V 1.0A or 1.5A for the original, which I know is okay, but have you seen the size of the XE brick? About 6cm x 6cm x 12cm, but the "replacement" is tiny. Is this okay? https://en.retrogamesupply.com/products/power-supply-for-atari-xl-xe I ended up getting a couple of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/140954042315
+DrVenkman
The amperage is the maximum under load; unmodifed XL's and XE's don't use much. 1.0 - 1.5 is generally fine but 2.0 won't hurt anything. And if you install a bunch of internal mods that might increase current draw, you'll be okay. The size difference has more to do with modern power supply design than capacity. New components are smaller and more efficient than the originals from 30+ years ago.
SignGuy81
It is a switching power supply. As long as voltage is same and current capabilities meet or exceed you should be fine, unless the switching power supply introduces noise.
SignGuy81
Realized someone else already answered while I was still typing. But switching power supplies are smaller because they don't need as big a transformer like a linear supply.
Swami
Okay, good to know. Also interesting. I have seen where for model #5 adapter "the mini", it says not to use on 800xl or 130xe, esp with MIO or RAM upgrades. But, as you said, this is old technology .. although my xbox 360 brick is still a beast. I'm sure the wattage is much much higher, though.
