Back to Montezuma's Revenge...

I've downloaded the program twice from Atari Mania, and both times I find the same bug. I'm running it on my 800 and

every time I go through a single red door on one of the lower levels the game glitches and I loose everything I am carrying.

There is a large lava pool and no way to get across it in this room. However the rest of the level is still lite up. If any one

would like I can post a couple of pictures of the room with the door and the room after it.

I many try this on my 130 XE to see if the problem replicates there too. Anyone else having this problem?

Yep, pictures would help here.

Besides, there are two versions of Montezuma, the older 48k version (approx. 37k filelength) and the newer 16k version. The older version has a title-screen and title-music, but it cannot be finished, since you cannot beat Montezuma; afaik this older version also has some other bugs and flaws... (thats why I personally prefer the newer 16k version)...

It's a known bug - they mention it on DigitPress. On the map, see the leftmost room at the 2nd level from the bottom.

It exists in the Parker Bros. prototype cartridge as well as in the UK Databyte tape release, but in the US disk releases by Parker Bros. or BCI Software this room works correctly.

There's also another difference - the cartridge and tape versions do not play any sound when the sword is used. In the disk versions, the sound plays correctly.

I like this version the best and consider it finished if you can get all the way to Montezuma. Then you only need to power off or press RESET key.

Thanks so much for the info. The version I downloaded from Atari Mania doesn't have any intro, you just appear at the beginning screen.

One of these days I may get around to taking a screen shot of every room and making a booklet out of it. Now that we are retired, my wife

seems to think that I've become her personal servant. I had more time of my own when we both worked! (A word of warning to you guys

thinking about retiring!) And remember: It is a scientific fact that married men live longer than single men. So guys, if you want a slow death...

Well,

Montezuma version without intro = newer 16k version, look here:

Yes, you got the commercially-released version. To clear up any confusion, my answer also mentioned only various releases of the commercial version.

The early version with intro is an unfinished prototype, this thread is quite specifically NOT about it.

One of these days I may get around to taking a screen shot of every room and making a booklet out of it.

Why? There already are full maps available at http://mapy.atari8.info- well, barring this one broken room, as the maps were probably based on a crack of the Databyte release.

Well I tend to think dying slowly is somewhat better than being already dead, but to be frank, I have pretty limited experience when it comes to dying.

Thanks for the mapy.atari8.info site, I never knew it existed. I'll look around for some of my old favorite games there.

Thanks,

David

Sorry to beat this dead horse once more...

I bought the U.S. Parker Bros disk version at Toys"R"US in the 80's. I know it is a PB product and think it was advertised in the mags here at that time. According to above, this version can be finished?

So there were 5 (common) versions?

1) Utopia disk version -- Europe?

2) Parker Bros. U.S. disk version

3) Prototype cartridge version

4) Released cartridge version

5) Cassette version?

It appears that Montezuma is taking his revenge on me!

Totally forgot about this thread. I guess I was not clear enough the last time, so:

There are 2 versions of Montezuma:

1. The unfinished CES demo by Robert Jaeger aka Utopia, with animated intro and all other bells & whistles, but lacking an ending. It was never published commercially.

2. The cut-down final version by Parker Bros. You can call it finishable, if you want 0 PB added level progression, so each level can be finished, but the 9th level repeats infinitely.

The PB version exists in the following formats:

- US disk release by PB,

- US disk release by BCI,

- EU disk release by Databyte,

- EU tape release by Databyte,

- prototype cartridge by PB, never published commercially.

The Databyte tape and the PB proto cart contain the room/audio bug, while the PB and BCI disks don't.

Which one is the cracked version with a title screen while loading? The title says something like cracked by Bruce , preliminary monty.

That is the one I knew and enjoyed, from a copied cassette.

Is there any difference wrt the no-utopia versions?

As stated above, it is the "non-Utopia" version.

Any way the Utopia version can be finished?

Nope, as admitted by Jaeger himself.

I think we should try to contact Robert Jaeger and see if he might be willing to add a quick end to it.

He was asked about it when interviewed few years ago - he was not interested. Interview (in Polish)

I swear, I cannot seem to locate an ATR or XEX of this where the sword makes a sound when used. Could someone please help me out?

Hardly a surprise, a nigh on 40yr old program, there's no real impetus to bother with it...Still, its a shame...

I couldn't agree more with you; It is a shame, but I can't blame him either. Still, I am grateful for what he gave us! Who would have thought

that a game written 40 years ago would still generate such interest?

The ATX's of PB and BCI releases are in Farb's "A8 preservation initiative" torrent.

An ATX file is fantastic for using with Altirra but I'm hoping to find a copy of the Parker Brothers disk release that I can play on real hardware via my UNO Cart.

OK, I am a dope sometimes. As it turns out I did already have a copy of the Parker Brothers disk release in ATR format. It was tucked away in a sub-folder that I had all but forgotten about. It runs A-OK on the UNO Cart. Posting it here in case someone wants to check it against the ATX file.
