Making a remake of Atlantis (2600 and INTV)

Recommended Posts

I've been working on a remake of Atlantis which is based primarily on the Atari 2600 and Intellivision versions. Yeah it's gonna be a mix of the 2 plus some new features added in. I also took inspiration from the Atari 8 bit personal computer system version. The game's almost complete, and here are 2 screenshots (I understand I'm far from being the best artist):

A few words about the game. Atlantis was one of the first games I wanted to remake but I dropped the project due to lack of motivation (it was gonna be in a package with a Missile Command and Exed Exes remake, though that one was solely based on the 2600 version). This one here is completely redone cause I no longer have the files for my old version (other than the screenshot below), graphics or the game, though I tried to imitate the original style I had, with some improvements.

There are things I wasn't terribly happy about but with the direction I'm taking it, I feel I've done the best I could without ruining the game or having to do a completely do-over which would probably cause me to lose motivation for finishing this game entirely (long story on that), so I wanted to do the smaller fixes and push this game along to be released.

When the game is released its "official page" would be on my blog like my other games.

You mentioned that you wanted to remake it and that you weren't happy with the original versions, but you don't really explain what you didn't like or why you thought it should be remade.

Not that you really need to offer an explanation for what or why... just curious is all.

I'll give it a whirl when you release it.

I always like the concept of the game, but playing on the Intellivision controller is a bit of a challenge.

A mouse or trak-ball will be a nice change of pace.

Oh I was referring to my current game when I said I wasn't happy because I found that on the Easy mode there was an exploit where you keep getting extra settlements even if you die so you're able to play for an indefinite amount of time. I introduced an option to turn off the rebuilding plus I lowered the "death bonus" you receive for every settlement when a round pauses so hopefully this would be a decent way of getting around/solving the problem cause I don't have a better option with how I want the scores you get to increment with every level. (as a fixed number of points per regular enemy seems too static and predictable).

Thanks for commenting. Currently I'm thinking of introducing a game over music which I wanted to "show the world" again cause it's a piece of music that was originally in Microsoft clipart or something that I couldn't find any record of anymore, so I remade a part of it with Mario Paint (I have no experience with proper music programs). The first version sounds too silly so I lowered the pitch by an entire octave and it seems better, though someone thought it sounded too fast for the gameover screen so I'm not sure if I'll include this, leave it silent (and lose my chance to show the music), or make it slower.

Yeah. My game is near finish. Just gonna test it out for a bit longer for any bug fixes. My plan is to drop the music and include it as an unused track in the game download page.

You'll find retro game remakes and retro-styled games here. Please let me know what you think of some of them (just don't use the commenting system on those pages since it doesn't notify me).

I have seperated my games into 2 eras: http://shogikappa.tumblr.com/gamelist(Windows 8 and up era)

Here are my old games made in the Windows Vista era: http://shogikappa.tumblr.com/post/143073417522/vista-game-reuploads(Not a complete list since I had ~275 games in this era)

I'm not sure if I should make one more update to the game cause I found out at least in the 2600 version, if all your settlements are destroyed but you have over 10000 points, the game doesn't end yet, instead the Gorgons keep attacking nothingness and then at the level break you get your stuff rebuilt.

Hi, I was trying to check out your game, but Windows smart screen keeps preventing me from trying it out. I am using a Windows 10 PC. It says running this app might put your PC at risk lol..

It says that cause I don't have a known publisher attached in the game info. Just click "more details" and it would let you run it.

Edit: version 2 uploaded. If you lose all your settlements but you have reached the next 1000 points, the game won't be lost immediately and you would get a rebuild at the coming level break.

I created a manual for my Atlantis game in the vein of Strategy Wiki articles. There are issues when viewing it with Google Docs so if you want to view it in its original form, I think downloading it may be better, but the Google Docs conversion should still be readable.
