BillyHW
Does anyone know of any decent Berzerk or Frenzy clones for the C64? Thanks.
landgraf
Berzerk Redux is pretty good: http://www.rgcd.co.uk/2013/03/berzerk-redux-c64-2013.html
carlsson
I was about to suggest Amok! but that one seems only to have existed on the VIC-20. There are a few older Berzerk games on Gamebase64 but perhaps none is particularly good. I suppose games in the Shamus and Wizard of Wor segment are too far from Berzerk to match your needs? There are 1151 games in the category "Shoot'em Up - Miscellaneous". Fortunately all Berzerk, Shamus, Wizard of Wor etc type games are located in the same category so if you have a lot of time on your hands you can browse through the entire category trying to identify matching games. http://gamebase64.com/search.php?a=5&f=5&id=5&d=18&h=0&p=7 Edited July 9, 2017 by carlsson
BillyHW
Well I'm really looking for shameless clones of Berzerk or Frenzy. I don't think they were ever officially ported to C64. landgraf's suggestion looks interesting, but it appears to be a recent homebrew. I will definitely try it. Not that I'm against new homebrews, but I would also be interested in something made in the 80s. Speaking of Gamebase64, has anybody had any luck downloading anything from that site lately? It hasn't worked for months for me.
carlsson
It seems the server used for individual downloads was shut down late last year, not sure on which premises but one can take a wild guess... The entire collection though seems to be available from other sources, if you can spare a few gigabyte and have a fast connection. Anyway, if you want some titles these are the ones I found: Arena 3000: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=388&d=18&h=0 Berzerk (Alpha Software): http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=13714&d=18&h=0 Berzerk (Element 114): http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=21621&d=18&h=0 Berzerk (Donnie Russell): http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=24651&d=18&h=0 Berzurk: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=19591&d=18&h=0 Booze Cruise: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=19477&d=18&h=0 Cybermen: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=1893&d=18&h=0 Cybertron Mission: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=1898&d=18&h=0(perhaps more of a Shamus clone) Cybotron: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=1907&d=18&h=0 Zip: http://gamebase64.com/game.php?id=22515&d=18&h=0 Generally, the category of miscellaneous shooters contain a lot of unknown games with seemingly big, colourful graphics quite unlike the general C64 style so it might be worth exploring in detail.

Thanks, I could have sworn I searched for Berzerk titles a few years back and didn't find any.

+cvga
Berzerk Redux is pretty good: http://www.rgcd.co.uk/2013/03/berzerk-redux-c64-2013.html Based on the video, it looks really good! I never realized that Berzerk wasn't ported to the C-64 back in the day.
carlsson
Berzerk (Stern 1980) perhaps was getting a little old by late 1982, early 1983 when the C64 was gaining ground, and newer types of shooters like the previously mentioned Shamus filled part of the need. Frenzy (Stern 1982) as far as I understand was officially only available for the Colecovision in 1983, plus at least two unofficial versions for the ZX Spectrum. Possibly Coleco obtained exclusive rights to home versions of Frenzy? It should be noted that neither of the following Stern/Konami did appear on the C64: * Amidar * Anteater * Bagman * Berzerk * Frenzy * Super Cobra * Turtles * Tutankham Actually the only exception seems to be Pooyan, which was released by Datasoft. There were a number of Scramble games too, but those more likely were clones using the same name rather than licensed ports of Stern/Konami's game. I suppose if one goes through the rest of the Konami library, we'd see a lot of missing titles as well, they aiming more at video games and eventually MSX computers than other formats with a few exceptions.
BillyHW
Hey folks, I found an NTSC and trained version of Berzerk Redux at the following link. Does anyone know what "+4D" means? http://csdb.dk/release/?id=117031
carlsson
I think +4 means four different options in the trainer, and the capital D for built-in documentation/instructions. What the other letters like E, G and H represent I'm not sure of. I saw some game released as +44D which seems excessive if it has so many trainer options. landgraf
H stands for the addition of a Highscore-saver the original didn't have, D is for Documentation included and F may stand for NTSC-Fix. E might be for a release modded to run from the Easyflash cartridge, but G totally escapes me . As for those Stern/Konami releases, at least for Bagman there was Bagitman by Aardvark Software, which was also released with a different colour-scheme as "Murphy" by Mogul Communications Ltd., and then there was also Gilligan's Gold by Ocean as more or less inofficial ports. No idea about the other games, though. Edit: Just asked someone in the know about those cracker tags, E stands for translation to English (mostly done with text-heavy games like adventures), and G is for additional Graphics, like a title pic from a different system that's converted to a C64 graphic format.
