Another Release From Piko Interactive

my switchblade arrived today.

i am unsure why there has been some cost cutting here? it does not appear to be as good a quality a product as custodian was.

  • the cartridge label is not big enough for the cartridge
  • the cartridge label looks like it has been drawn on with a ball point pen down one side
  • my manual appears to have been crumpled somehow

the custodian label is not a correct jaguar cart label (rounded edges at the top and flat at the bottom) but it is much better than the switchblade label. and in my opinion acceptable

as for the game, it works, i haven't tried it apart from making sure it boots, i will have a go later. i would think a good job was done with this considering who got it running :)

the box looks OK, apart from the orange '64 - bit' which kind of sticks out. the jaguar standard is yellow is it not?, it was orange on custodian but it was a slight inconvenience, just thought i would mention it here because of the other bits

Well I mentioned the other day that the side of the box appears to have been printed upside down. In order for it to match up with the rest of my games I have to put the box on the shelf upside down. That was not the case with Custodian. The manual is smaller than the Custodian manual which makes it dissimilar to typical Jaguar manuals. That's fine but it is different from the previous release. You are also correct that the cartridge label is too small for the cart which is a departure from Custodian. That's also a small gripe that I don't care too much about. The most glaring thing though is the large number of typos in the manual. There are numerous places where the main character's name is spelled wrong (Hire instead of Hiro), words are run together (the worst case of this being in the Shields section where it says "ThisgivesHiroasixteen"), misspellings and other mistakes like graphics shadows on top of text. I would think at the very least the text of the manual would be run through a spell checker. Preferably it would be proof read by numerous individuals. The game played well but it froze for me when entering my initials for the high score screen. I haven't tried to duplicate it yet. I will play it again later and see if it happens.

Your post mirrored my thoughts. The overall quality of this release does not match the quality of Custodian. I'm not sure what changed but I hope the kinks can be worked out going forward.

Hey Guys,

Just reading posts. I want to make an official statement.

Labels arrived in the wrong size (tooooooo small) so we had to do our own and worked on them to make them as acceptable as possible to be able to meet shipping dates. Same happened to the Booklet, the size was supposed to be the same size as Custodian. Printshop messed up on us, and there wasn't enough time to reprint.

However I didn't think much of the sizes because (with Jaguar and all our games) I consider our releases as an "unlicensed" developer, manufactured as a 3rd party. So Im ok if our games are not 100% same as official releases (this applies too to the orientation of the logos).

However I do see a problem with the crashing. We tested the game to play from beginning to end, but never thought about inputting the name for high score. Unfortunately I tested just now, and it does to crash there. I'd like to point out we tested the game to be able to pass it from beginning and end. Since Custodian we decided to do our PCB without RAM saving to keep pricing low; so never thought about testing the high score screen.

I do see this as a problem.

For this matter, I will offer a $5 refund to anyone that requests it + a $10 coupon for our store for a total of $15. I apologize for not testing more and going all the way to the Highschore screen.

Just pm for your refund and coupon =D.

Cheers.

Guys, I apologise for this. I have no idea how this one slipped through :(

I have discussed with Piko, and will send a fixed ROM to him shortly. He has agreed, on top of the above statement, that If you have purchased the game he will email you the fixed ROM file for use on a Skunkboard or emulator.

There is also a cheat mode for the game: On the Piko screen, press 2+0

Again, sorry for this folks.

can i just point out that an eeprom either 93lc46 / 93lc86 is a relatively tiny priced item and would have been $3 absolute maximum depending on which one used, probably less.

my last calculations were:

93lc46: £0.26

93lc86: £0.62

Update: just got home and tested.

If you click the END button on the highscore screen (bottom right) the game will continue and not lock up (In fact, it doesn't lock up, it just doesn't refresh the screen on the high score entry part) - you can still move around blindly. High scores are not saved anyway, as Eli mentioned above.

In short, don't enter your name, and it'll work.

Priceless. God I want this game now

Though I haven't been around as long as a lot of people, I've had my Jaguar about 10 years and relatively new the forum as an actual member and not just lurking, I have to say I love that the homebrew community is still going. I think these ports are fun. Gives someone like me, who never spent much time with an Amiga or ST a chance to play fun games from the past.

Honestly this is a little disappointing. I was going to order this game soon but really, how hard is a little attention to detail?

Most repro makers on ebay can cobble together a decent label that fits the cartridge, and you guys (Piko,) a legitimate retro game company are sending out stuff with off-size labels, creased-up instruction booklets, etc?

For $60 bucks the product should be solid. Please fix and update, as I do want to buy this!

It's good that they are offering a rebate for those who have already purchased the game once the bug was discovered. I'm sure they will do a ROM revision on any future copies sold. It is a minor bug after all. as far as the manuals go, sending out replacements for those who are interested could be an option, although I doubt it will bother many people.

According to the tracking number, my game was supposed to be delivered on 9/28/17. That didn't occur. After no updates over the weekend, now it says the package was delayed in transit. It has arrived at the Chicago Network Distribution Center as of 10/1/17. Hopefully I will receive it in the next few days. Then I can request my $5 refund and $10 coupon.

I received my copy of Switchblade for the Jaguar today. The game is OK once one got used to the handling and controls. But I have the feeling that the production was rushed? After a quick round of playing I found some issues.

In the manual there is a line indicating a function of button A but there is none. This is not the biggest problem as there is really no use of button A.
But the game crashed when I tried to enter a name in the highscore list. It simply froze. Or maybe it didn´t. But I wasnt able to move the cursor or enter anything or exit the screen. Strange.
The Pause button does not work. This is also strange. I don´t remember if the original version had a pause function but really, if at least minimal changes can be made to justify a release of an almost 30 year old game then it is using the controller properly.
And is there any save game function? Or does it work via codes? I am sure it is not expected that players play through the entire game in one go - or is it?
Are there any cheat codes?
I asked Piko by PM but maybe somebody here knows anything.
Cheers
Stefan
The poster is low res 8-(( I have no problems spending money for a game if was properly done. I would spend 2 or 3 times as much for a good conversion of Turrican, Oids - even Wings of Death... but this just looks rushed or done with minimal interest. If I am unfair pls tell me. I appreciate Piko's effforts though. I just want to give hints on how to improve things.
