Are YouTubers Ruining Retro Gaming?

Recommended Posts

Metal Jesus is one of these YouTubers who is in loooove with free stuff.

I mean...free is usually pretty sweet. I know I'm not nearly willing or able enough to put in all the work a lot of the more popular youtubers (yours included, which I enjoy) to maybe one day get games and controllers sent to me, though.

Gotta love when Youtubers make videos, and mention, "I have this, and this... but I don't have THIS yet. BUT GEE. I SURE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT IN MY COLLECTION.

WINK WINK.

NUDGE NUDGE.

BOY THAT SURE WOULD BE GREAT.

FILL THAT HOLE OF AFFECTION AND HUMAN INTERACTION IN YOUR LIFE BY BUYING ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM ME AND A SHOUT OUT FOR YOUR CHANNEL BY SENDING ME A $300 GAME."

I'm sure I could get game companies to send me free stuff as well, but if they did, I would never review them. It would be hard to give a 100% honest critique of their products. It's different of course when viewers send me stuff though, because they don't have anything to gain from my review, aside from a shoutout.

I'm going to Retropalooza in October and am thinking about asking some of the Youtube personalities there what they think.

I'm not going to spend money to give any of them anything. I am taking one of them a sealed Back to the Future trilogy dvd set that I have because he's a big fan of the movies. I don't even remember where I got it. But it means nothing to me.

Youtuber RGT85 recently did a video of opening mail where people have sent him stuff. There were a few from kids with hand drawn pictures or whatever, but the last one he opened was a couple of Saturn games... Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force. So yeah... someone just gave him about $700 to $800.

I mainly stick to youtubers who at least try to bring something to the table. Users like LGR, This Does Not Compute, VectrexRoli, Ace, ArcadeUSA, and Ewhac do a good job providing information that I didn't know before or show me new things. I also do enjoy some good fluff entertainment like Steve Benway.

I think one of the best things to come from youtube is an easy platform for chiptune artists to show off their talents. Guys like Deejay Verstyle, ChiptunedRaijin, and Savaged Regime (aka Gecko Yamori) make great stuff and I wouldn't have found out about them without youtube.

I think the real question we should be having is....Is Retro Gaming ruining YOUTUBERS?

My stupid joke aside, I have a hard time watching some of the "look what I got sent!" stuff. It's cool that people are willing to do that, but the jealousy monster in me is all like "OH YEAH THEY TOTALLY DESERVED THAT FOR NOTHING OTHER THAN BEING KINDA SOMEWHAT FAMOUS!" Damn you envy! >_<

I like a weird selection of YouTube though and try to stay away from the clickbait-esque Youtube personalities. I'm generally more into seeing or learning odd game facts or tricks.

I don't think I've ruined anything and I've been youtubing since 2009. I think the key to my success is that no one listens to a damn word I say.

Atari Leaf,

Ive been following you on youtube for years. I have to say you have a nice channel. It doesnt feed to the money hungry masses who see something and try to capitalize on it. Your just a cool guy with games and shares his passion for games. THIS is what youtube should be. I always look forward your videos cause its just a gamer having fun. No fluff ,hype or monitary gain to be had like bigger channels. Never change man. Your impact helps us true gamers enjoy our stuff even more.

Well I have plans on continuing my reign of destroying gaming for everyone and I am going to start with my next video soon to be released. In fact its going to set Atari onto a new avenue and shame others into never giving me anything.

Well that's the goal anyhow too bad procrastination rules my life. It even makes me not want to.......

Because MJR is so into free stuff, I have a very hard time trusting his opinion. Unfortunately lots of folks DO trust his opinion and then you get "scandals" like his endorsement of a potentially dangerous HDMI dongle for the Gamecube, and then it repays him by killing his console.

I watch more retrogaming YouTube stuff now than I did a year ago or six months ago, but even then it's mostly just Game Sack, Gaming Historian, CGQ, and MLiG (edit: almost forgot StopDrop&Retro). I'd much rather play games than watch/read about them (although I'm learning that I do love talking about them) so I've never been a big YouTube watcher. I'm an even-less frequent YouTube uploader. My most famous video has all of 5900 views.

I mostly skip pickup videos. They tend to be rather long and I usually get really bored very quickly.

I don't understand them either so maybe I should do them so I can understand better. Its just too bad because some people just would rather not be on video and getting permission can be a pain and we know everyone follows those rules ha ha.

No really I don't like them either its like watching someone else open christmas presents or creeping in on a Chuck E Cheese party, even offering other women advice on buying undergarments. ( ok that last one might be too much...but is it though?)

I'm not in the youtube know, so I don't know the slang. What is a "pickup" video?

I'm referring to videos where collectors usually just list the stuff they got, often when they get a good deal.

I could enjoy a pickup video if it was more like one or two games and they went into interesting things about them. Usually it's like reading a shopping list. I get the excitement to share when you have an audience but boy, I just don't care about your bag o goodies.

I only watch Pickup videos to find if they got anything interesting that's maybe a title I haven't heard of.

Other than that... I kinda like the "Goodwill" style of pickup that LGR (Lazy Game Reviews) does. I think it's cool to see these things in the wild... I just don't have a lot of accessible thrift stores / junk shops in my area. The few I do see rarely have anything worth putting the effort into. The only thing I found in the several years that I tried was a Complete in Box Dragon Warrior IV.

I like the idea of pickups if they go into details and show off individual games so I can find interesting titles.

Can you think of anything less creative, skill-based, or interesting than here is the latest batch of stuff I randomly scrounged? Except maybe those game by game boxes that read numbers off the box variations into the microphone, like trainspotting for shut-ins.

If I ran YouTube, Id make people click through multiple dialogue boxes that say things like, are you sure this is something the world wants/needs to see? Is it relevant or interesting to anything or anyone? Are you really sure?

I don't mind pickups videos if the person gives their opinion about the game or discusses some interesting facts about it. Just talking about how much they payed for each one and how much each is worth is not very interesting or entertaining at all. Sadly, those kind of "how much is it worth" pickup videos seem to be the most popular.

Remember when people used to find stuff in the wild and just post pics in the "thrift finds" thread? Now you have to sit through a 15 minute video complete with backstory just to see what they got. It reminds me of a lot of online recipes that I see nowadays. Like the first 3 paragraphs are just talking about why they wanted to make the dish, and a bunch of other fluff, before they finally get to the cooking instructions.

I mean, I guess I'm kind of a hypocrite because I have a YouTube channel, but I try not to make the show about me. It's about the games and their history.

The worst type of "retro" YouTubers are the shelf collectors who have no clue what they are talking about. These people get on my nerves when they overinflate prices on their "pickups" , therefore causing a jump in the said items price.

This opinion I can really relate to. These guys haven't got a clue even about the stuff they buy. Sure, we all make mistakes but at least most proper gamers understand the history of what they're in to.
