coleco82
I ask because it was a popular OS for PC games in the Late 80s and mid 90's. What are your experiences with DOS games back in the day ? Do you have any favorites ? Do you use DOSBOX or a retro PC ? I appreciate any and all comments :-)

I appreciate any and all comments :-) My personal favorites were the Lucasarts games, and world builder games like Transport Tycoon Deluxe, SimCity, oh and the early first person shooters, like Doom, Heretic, Rise of the Triad-- Doom was the game that finally convinced me it was time to switch to PC in the first place. I've used Dosbox primarily. But I've been bothered with lack of updates recently. I don't know much about RetroPC, I'll have to look into it. coleco82
Thanks for your reply zzip. By retro pc I meant any vintage pc, Packard Bell, HP Vectra, Compaq etc. Some of favorites were: MegaRace, Mad DOg 2 The Lost Gold, Star Wars Rebel Assault 2, Doom 2, Skyroads, X-Men Children of the Atom, Scorched Earth, Battle Chess CD Rom and of course Jazz Jackrabbit and EPIC Pinball I typically use DOSBOX and I get games off of GOG.com when I can. Sometimes GOG.com will never have what I want so then I have to put on my pirate hat to get what I want. Examples are : X-Men children of the Atom and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo CD. Tanooki
If a section happened DOS isn't quite fair, perhaps a vintage computer topic in general. Quite a few people did end up using stuff from IBM OS2/warp to Apple lovers and their various Macs and things. They all got some really solid for the time (and yes some better still timeless) in the 80s and 90s before things went all 32bit and then 64bit required level stuff. The early 3D or pre-3D (polygonal video card needed) era like 1985-95.
carlsson
For what it is worth, there already is a category for Classic Computing. My understanding of the non-Atari sub categories is to cater for formats that don't have much of a following elsewhere, or at least not much of an US-centric following elsewhere, which is why several of the minor formats are present but some of the major ones lacking. As for DOS gaming (and also Windows 95/98 gaming, I would think), I don't know which other forums are available. Dosbox takes most of the pain out of having to deal with TSRs and Dos memory management , plus adds convenient features a real Dos system doesn't have. There are LOTS of old and good playable games out there... Since you are soliciting comments I'll make the following.... *IF* a DOS section is formed, it might be nice to have a couple of 'pinned threads' at the top.... 1) Containing DOS BOX and idiot proof installation and operating instructions in PDF form for users. 2) A thread containing links to or downloads of some of the really cool, but now public domain games.
Tanooki
I could see those 2 steps. I haven't setup DOSBox in a lot of years, and even back then I had to keep referring to the guide to get the steps down right on the whole mounting procedure and things, and I never did bother to figure out how to fine tune those .conf files. Personally I use GOG, they have much of what I found fun anyway back then by now, but there are some rotten annoying hold outs like the old Epic games stuff (Solar Winds, Epic Pinball, Silverball) and some Apogee things like Jill of the Jungle, Keen1-6, Halloween Harry are missing too which sucks. At this rate and it's lazy I suppose, I rather not waste my time as I have enough to bother with as it is, but if someone made some dumb app that just cobbled things together like those old useful GUIs in windows people made for crusty command line stuff without shame I'd use it. I don't mind a challenge or learning things, but it would need some continued long term usefulness and this wouldn't be that case.

Yeah, pre-configured and ready for it's own subdirectory would work, then a person could put all their shortcuts in one directory. The first download of this new thread could have the DOS BOX and about 4 or 5 games in their own subdirectories as an example for others to see the structure and formatting... then continue on in the same method. I have no clue what people would want for the initial 5, but you mentioned Jill of the Jungle, Pinball and the Keen series which would be cool. I'd also like to see Castle Wolfenstein or maybe even SimCity and the Terrain Editor.
boxpressed
A DOS section would be nice. But check out vogons.org too.

Besides, DOS isn't as old as the old 8-bits that have their own sections. There's no category for Playstation or Saturn, either. Just use Classic Computing for now. If there's enough traffic or demand, a DOS subforum will come.
Tanooki
VOGONS would require yet another website with another login/password to manage. Couldn't hurt to have a little corner for those here for general stuff, then refer back for anything too complicated no one answers.
coleco82
I have my dos games packaged in a exe file that installs to C:\DOSGAMES. The shortcuts are put on the desktop. This makes everything easy as pie.....mmmmm pie :-) I have a whole slew of dos games spanning many genres, some of which are still/never on GOG.com
Tanooki
You know one game I played the hell out of in the day I still haven't noted from before that was in DOS and most excellent for that time was Speed Racer in the Challenge of Racer X. Amazing 3rd person view racing game, and all of those special tricks of the Mach 5 worked great and were not gimmicks but well used accessories to win each route of the races. Game had a digital copy of the 60s tv theme music/vocals on the opening done with some nice color animation too and I think it was like over 3 disks. Not DOS but Win95, still loved the old SIM Tower too, but at least it was copied on GBA as The Tower SP which I do have.
mr_me
Where is the best place to put emulation topics; in the system's section or in this general emulation section? Sometimes it's better to go in the system's section. The system section for MS-DOS would be "Classic Computing". Usually a subsection gets created when there are enough topics to justify one. And I liked Civilization, Railroad Tycoon, and Stunts. There's lots of topics in the classic computing section about favourite games. Sadly, DosBox works worse than the DOSsubsystem on windows 10, and i know its also for mac, but we should NEED to find a better emulator! also, its called "FoolProof", otherwise, yeah. Windows 10 64-bit doesn't have a DOS subsystem. It has a command line interface with DOS-like commands. It doesnt run 16-bit programs . The 32-bit versions of Windows does have NTVDM which runs 16-bit dos programs. Its not emulated like dosbox. I didn't know it was better than dosbox to run old dos games on modern PCs.

Atari 2600 H.E.R.O
@coleco82 I'm using OSx16 Boot-CD (Boot-USB, Also), Atari Games with Easy-To-Use OSxGC Interface (Command) Included. OS and/or System is not my problem, Just Now. I Have problem With My USB Sound Adapter and OSxUSND of OSx16 and BOOT-USB, Sometimes with Some Systems (OSx16 Supports USB Sound Card/Adapter With OSxUSND). But With OSx16 BOOT-CD, No, I Have Not. I Think OSxUSND Developed By OSx16 Developers, For Atari And Atari Games, Only ! Suggestion : Download and Test it (OSx16 BOOT-USB OR BOOT-CD). Good Luck. +-^CrossBow^-
I primarily use DOSbox as well. It is an older version, but contains the MT32 emulation built in so I've not updated it. Works great for most of the old adventure games I like to play, but not everything. I can't get any settings on DOSbox to work well enough with the Wing Commander Games for my liking.
