+davidcalgary29
I've wanted to install some upgrades for some time now, but have no soldering experience and think that a VBXE upgrade is probably not the best place to start. Is anyone selling their services?

Ely
I am, but am in the UK.I'm curious, what sort of costs do you charge? I've an 800XL that needs stuff doing but I'm not confident in unsoldering chips really.

Marius
Not me... but I absolutely van recommend FlashJazzCat. This guy is fabulous and tests stuff till the very end. He really cares about atari 8bit and he has lots of experience in addressing the usual issues people can run into while installing modern upgrades in old computers.
beamer320i
And recommended by me as well- Jon (FlashJazzCat) has worked on nearly all of my machines, whether it be an upgrade/modification or repairs to non working/faulty machines. His knowledge on these machines is plentiful, is very reasonable price wise and can be trusted with your much loved Atari!
+davidcalgary29
What about a new pinned thread collating instructions and videos for hardware mods?
ndary
JFC is recommended, see his videos on you tube.. Paul from Portland is also good at it. the alternative is to come to one of the Polish Atari meeting and bring your computer for an upgrade Nir

+davidcalgary29
Ha! The thought of a twelve-hour international flight (and five hour drive to the airport) is almost worth the thought of going through customs: 'Anything to declare? Just my NTSC 1200XL. It's in the AtariAge registry! I'm taking it to the ABBUC meeting so I can get VBXE, 'ultimate 1mb', and stereo POKEY installed!' (Security called, causing a diplomatic crisis). Just for kicks, I went to the local computer store yesterday: Me: 'Hi, do you do custom soldering?' Store guy: -blank stare- Me: 'But it's for an 8-bit computer! I need to run 'Tempest Elite' in VBXE mode! Store guy: -backing away slowly- Me: 'hello? I have cash! I also need a DB 15 to DB 9 male/male cable to connect my Falcon! Wait!' -tragic scene ends-

Let me know what you want done and I might even have a machine with those upgrades already in them (or close enough) to save on some time. Jetboot Jack
I totally recommend FlashJazzCat - his work is superb, my 1200XL is a delight post surgery! sTeVE
BillC
I totally recommend FlashJazzCat - his work is superb, my 1200XL is a delight post surgery! sTeVE May be fine for UK/EU, but shipping costs would be too high to make it economical for Americans/Canadians. It's bad enough just between USA and Canada. I sent a 2lb. package to Texas a few weeks back, the rates were CDN$21.25 with tracking or CDN$16.82 without. flashjazzcat
May be fine for UK/EU, but shipping costs would be too high to make it economical for Americans/Canadians. It depends somewhat on what you want doing. If it's a $25 soldering job, then no: it's not economical. But if it's a $100 plus job involving - say - Dremel work on the case or fitting a DIN13 to the motherboard which can easily end up making your $300 1200XL look like crap in the wrong hands, then it is arguably worthwhile. VAT and import duty at the UK end can be quite legitimately avoided by declaring "warranty repair" or similar on the customs declaration.
+davidcalgary29
Shipping costs WITHIN Canada alone is insane. This isn't a deal-breaker for me. For some reason, though, items take 1-2 months to arrive from the UK, so patience is required. Conversely, I've never had to wait more than ten days for a package from France. Mystery!
