Homebrew RAM Upgrade for 1000s and Slot Converters for the EX/HX

Recently, I came across this interesting homebrew board : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Duo-Slot-512K-RAM-Card-for-the-Tandy-1000-1000A-or-1000HD-Memory-Board-/272770380504

and there is this adapter : http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?58793-Tandy-1000-Adapters-expressions-of-interest

The first adds 512KB of RAM to maximize a Tandy 1000. It also adds two expansion slots, but the cards you can put into those slots are likely to be limited. As I have determined here, the lack of DMA is not likely going to be a problem for many people : http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?58833-Experience-of-a-DMA-less-Tandy-1000

The second is becoming an ISA card riser for the Tandy 1000 EX & HX. There is a riser for a RAM expansion equipped EX/XH and a 3x riser for the unexpanded EX/HXs.

Very timely post from you regarding this, as I was just trying to figure out how to add RAM to my Tandy. Alas, the Tandy I recently picked up is a RLX. I have yet to examine it fully, but I am playing it safe and assuming it only has the standard 512k. Do you know of ANY homebrew projects that are addressing the RLX and getting it up to the 1 Meg that RLX-HDs have? It seems most games I want to play on my new RLX want to have 640k of RAM.

You don't need a special upgrade or adapter, just four of these chips : http://www.ebay.com/itm/20PC-NEW-MB81C256-12PSZ-FUJITSU-20PIN-ZIP-PACKAGE-256-x-4-120NS-DRAM-/131847324355

A little pricey, but you can upgrade five RLXs this way!

Oh, thank you!

I am still learning the ins-and-outs of the RLX, as I never have had one before, so I am pretty ignorant to a lot of this.

So, basically, a person just has to pop in these chips into the appropriate sockets and voila...you are good to go? Like I said, I have yet to open up the RLX, but are its innards pretty easy to navigate when it comes to placing RAM chips in?

I guess after those, all I would need is a CF XTIDE board for the 8-bit slot to be used as a hard drive and the RLX should be fun to play with!

  • 4 months later...

Going to bump this from earlier in the year, but just wanted to say, I FINALLY set up my RLX today. My wife and I just moved into our new house last week, so I was waiting all this time to get the Tandy up and running. To my astonishment and surprise, the 1000 RLX I bought off of eBay all those months ago in the early summer already has a meg of RAM in it, as well as a 30-meg hard drive! I was actually very surprised there was a hard drive in it, as the auction didn't advertise it nor the extra RAM. A nice little surprise after all of these months not knowing what I had!
