eBay china sellers tactic to cover their mistakes ?

So I ordered a GB boy colour from one of the many chinese sellers at eBay.

I waited 4 weeks to receive it and when it shows up it's actually the GB boy classic (the crappy B&W one).

I contact the seller telling him he sent the wrong item so please advise (btw the listing indicates buyer pays for shipping back).

He proposed to refund me half the price and keep the item, he cited a supplier mishap as the culprit.

I stated that he has to refund fully and that if he wants the wrong item back he should be paying the cost of shipping as they confirmed it's their mistakes.

Well I receive a "order cancel" notification from eBay and obviously a full refund so why do I even open a thread?

It turns out that I cannot leave any feedback to the seller as "order cancelled" literally reverts the transaction as if it never happened (I can't even see it in my purchase history).

Does this little trick opens the door to sellers to "hide" some of their misdeeds?

The only part that upset me a little was the "offer" to buy the wrong item at basically half price of the wanted item ..... which makes no sense to me, it seems more of a way to push unwanted inventory around at a discount, I can't even know for sure if it was done "purposefully" or really a mistake.

If he proposed right away a refund I would have left positive feedback anyway, with that intermediate half-assed proposal, not so much anymore! But I won't even have the chance now.

What do you think?

You should still be able to report that to ebay as suspicious seller behavior. They can and will investigate because ebay only cares about buyers and not sellers. Which is why I don't sell on ebay any more.

Also, yea, Chinese sellers are notorious for shady stuff on ebay. I've had the keep the item for X price and I'll cancel the order routine before.

Agreed with the other replies. The other thing I've seen from Chinese sellers is the "free gift" sent separately from what you actually ordered.

Example: I paid for a case for a computer tablet. They shipped a package with a tracking number. Inside the package was a hair scrunchie and a note saying my paid item was on the way, and to be patient. I reported the seller as "not as described," got a full refund, and won't do business with them. I felt a tiny bit bad when a MONTH later, the thing I ordered actually arrived, but these shenanigans are no good.

The partial refund scam is pretty bad, too.

These scammers have wrecked overseas sales by legit sellers for years to come.

^Served them right for wasting time and money to mail a scrunci to you. I'd think scam too and do the same thing. The free gift should have been in the same box would be my logic.

I've never heard of that tactic before with ebay but add that to another list of reasons I won't buy from China on there unless it's excessively cheap and I don't need it for weeks (I'm talking like a $5 adapter/cable thing.) I'd rather sign up to aliexpress and hope for the best because from what I've read they tend to hold sellers on there more accountable even if they do sell a lot of shady stuff. eBay just cares to hose over sellers in a majority of cases so I can see why the Chinese dude would pull a stunt like that to try and cover himself from their claws because the system won't allow punishment while many lazy people wouldn't call in to dish it out.

What some might not realize is that the money was likely an eBay refund, and did not go back on the seller... so they kept the money and continue to be liars and thieves. I have had this happen several times with Chinese and US Sellers. I learned about this when I had a LOT of back and forth with a seller and eventually eBay refunded my money... so I messaged this seller with an mostly inappropriate "I told you so" and he informed me that he didn't have to refund me and eBay ruled in his favor. SO I did some research and sure enough... eBay eats it in order to keep both seller and buyer happy when there is a difficult dispute. I am aware of more than five of these types of settlements over the last few years.

Just a friendly PSA if the seller offers to resend replacement, do remember the final day you can open or escalate claim, many dishonest Chinese seller often use fake number or just never send replacement and are hoping you'd forget. Also when you left a neg, do not be tempted by offer of refund if you removed, I've heard stories of people who removed the neg but never got refund and feedback cannot be re-applied.

I've ordered a few items from China EBay sales. I got an 8bitdo controller most recently, and everything went fine. Weird thing is, I keep getting shipments with small items I didn't order later. No indication they're related, but I'm assuming they're a result of the prior order, because they're definitely coming through customs from overseas. I got some little plastic seam ripper or something. It didn't say what it was. A week later I got a knife sharpener. Both we're worth a buck or less. I'm wondering if it's some kind of customs import racket where the purpose is to get something else through customs, and these pointless things are used as a way to make it look legit. Curious.

There's been a lot of Chinese sellers with 0 FB, odd names that looks like they used random number generator, and listed items at very low price. I've seen $20 Sony Vita with games, $25 new in box 5200 console, etc. The listing usually gets killed by eBay but if someone got suckered into buying the fake stuff, they aren't automatically refunded. If they don't open dispute due to invalid auction, after 21 days the seller gets the money where they can transfer or empty it out and eBay has no way to recover them.

Buyers are still protected after that, up until 1 month past estimated delivery date but eBay are losing money paying back buyers when the seller screws the system.

What I think needs to be done: if the listing is cancelled over suspicion it's fake, all buyers are to be automatically refunded and the seller gets nothing waiting to clean out.
