Well, you removed the RF shield - of course you're going to get interference and RF noise. The RF shield was put there for a reason. What did you expect? :?

Routing the cable properly will help, and a squirt of contact cleaner (CRC or Deoxit brands are great) will ensure the channel switch works better, but it won't do a thing for the interference. AV modding will give you a sharper picture but the board will still radiate RF noise from all the non-exposed chips and components. That doesn't matter as much as it used to with TV stations not using NTSC analog TV anymore but the signal can still interfere with digital TV reception nearby, but that depends a lot on the kind of antenna being used and so forth.

The shield was starting to rust in places. The channel switch works fine just the cover on it is rusted.

So? Clean the shield, sand off the corrosion if it bothers you that much and put it back on unless you want to live with the RF interference. Like I said, it's there for a reason. Even if you install a composite or s-video mod, the system will be radiating RF noise. That noise may or may not interfere with other stuff nearby. *shrug*
