Best Ti994A games for a newb?

Im about to dig my fathers old Ti994a out of his basement, i tried getting into it once already, but the games he had where pretty uninspiring. But after seeing how much support there is in the community, I'm going to give it another go. Whats the best SD card Device, and what games should i track down? Homebrew stuff?

i personally really enjoy Slymoids, the Scott Adams Adventure games (if you like text-based adventure), Crossfire, Buck Rogers, and Henhouse,

 

i cant avow to the homebrew stuff just yet because I haven't played much

32k is mandatory to play homebrew/disk software

finalgrom99 is the latest and greatest sd card, finalroms are available as well but only do 32k rom via sd while finalgrom's do 1mb rom+ grom emu

- Check out emulators like Classic99 and load easily all the games

(games are on ftp://ftp.whtech.com)

 

and online JS99er.net (select "more" for all the modules), so you can see them online.

Of course you can play them on your own TI, easiest is:

* get a FinalGrom (with SD card), via Ralph (search in the forum) and a sidecar 32K module (via Arcadeshopper)

 

* or get an ubergrom cart pre-configured with games e.g. 2048K Games 1 card + a sidecar 32K module (both via Arcadeshopper)

The games from Parker Bros - Popeye, Qbert, Frogger are among the best ports of those games on any original-era system, as are a few (Centipede / Moon Patrol / Pacman / Shamus / Robotron 2084) of the Atarisoft titles.

 

DataBioTics has an amazing Tennis and a Jumpman clone which is inarguably as good (or better) than the original, Tigervision has a near perfect version of Miner2049, and Funware has some GREAT titles like St Nick and Lobster Bay.

 

All of those only require a cartridge.

 

Then of course there are the TI homebrews, which in many cases surpass any other system (ours is without a doubt the best Scramble clone on any early 80's machine).

 

Add 32K and an F18A video board and your gaming library could grow (in quantity and quality) substantially adding jaw-dropping titles like Super Mario Bros (a multi-level demo that looks identical to the NES version), a stunning Alex Kidd and many many more.

 

Other Modern hardware... A FinalGrom is the most recent (and best) SD card solution for Cartriges, while the nanoPEB gives you CF card disc emulation, 32K and RS232 capabilities. There is also a stand-alone 32K expansion card that is a cost effective way to increase your memory and your library.

 

Try to add TI Extended Basic and the Editor/Assembler cart to your collection (or their file versions onto a FinalGrom99) ASAP, and they will make your potential file-based game library HUGE adding all manner of (originally) disk based software.

Got a 99 not too long ago myself, diving into the library has been pretty great.

 

I'll second the recommendations for Slymoids and Henhouse, both are great. Henhouse takes a little time to really get going but once it does it's frantic and awesome.

 

I'd also suggest Treasure Island, Moon Mine, Ambulance, Meteor Belt, Bigfoot, Fathom, Picnic Paranoia and Space Bandits. Tunnels of Doom is great if you have a means to load the dungeons. It's a good bet that Parsec was in that initial batch of games you tried, but it's worth snagging a copy if it wasn't.

I played Parsec in my youth, and wanted to play it again, was the whole reason i dug it out. I couldn't figure out the controllers last time, didn't know my dad was using a converter back in the day.
