What kind of cables does the Atari 8-bit family use?

  • RF on all models

All models (Except 600XL NTSC and XEGS) have a 5 pin DIN that outputs sVideo (Chroma/Luma) OR Composite - Depending on the cable you purchase/make will determine the terminations on the TV end

800XL needs an internal mod for Chroma or you get B&W over sVideo

600XL NTSC models do not have a monitor port, but can be upgraded to add one

XEGS uses regular RCA cables with composite only

The 400, like the NTSC 600XL, also has only RF output.

Get one of these (unless you have a 400, 600XL or XEGS). It has composite and S-Video. If yours has the 5 pin DIN, this is the one to get!

I used this cable with an 800 hooked up to an LCD tv that had svideo. It worked great.

That is really the nicest cable I've ever seen. It looks professionally made, and has ALL the connections.

I have a cable that goes to RCA plugs and had to buy a separate adapter to get SVID pinout.

SVID is always best if you have a monitor / TV that supports it.

I have that exact cable. It is really nice. I highly recommend it.
