V-Cool
In my search trying to figure out which option to use for saving files, I now discover Lotharek's Side 2. Am I correct in assuming it does most things that the Sio2SD does except in a cartridge? It appears to be able to store and load carts as well as disc software. I could download things on my Mac, save the to the card, plug it into the side and have loaders ready correct? Also, I see on his website that it appears that a new version, Side 3, is coming. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks
baktra
SIDE 2 is very useful, but it is not meant to be a replacement of a disk drive connected to the SIO port (like SIO2SD is). In the Game Loader mode, SIDE will just be able to run binary load files (but not cartridges) In the SpartaDOS mode, SIDE will act as a PBI hard drive. You must use a DOS that supports such drive. In this case, it's the embedded SpartaDOS X. Only If you have the ULTIMATE 1MB extension, you can use SIDE to emulate a floppy disk drive (using .atr disk images). If I went with the side, I was also planning on getting the Ultimate 1MB. But, it sounds like even with the pair, I still won't be able to load cartridge files? flashjazzcat
U1MB/SIDE2 can soft-load 8K ROMs, but no banked carts.

According to Lotharek, Side3 will load cartridges.
electrotrains
In my opinion, nothing beats sio2sd as a modern replacement for a floppy drive. All the cartridge solutions are limited in some way and not 100% compatible. As far as I know, even the PBI hard disk solutions won't work with everything e.g. Games that use custom SIO routines. Having said that, if you are after a cartridge that does most things, you might want to also check out AtariMax MyIDE 2, and also my own design the UnoCart: https://github.com/robinhedwards/UnoCart Robin
Level42
The!Cart comes close to being the perfect cartridge....except that it has to be programmed on the A8 itself...

Jacques
It may be silly or controversial question, since it's feature of SIDE3, but would it be possible for SIDE1/SIDE2 to support cartridge images, too?
