Return 5 thoughts?

Video

Recommended Posts

Just like some info and thoughts on this. It gets over all good reviews, and could replace a lot of consoles, most my 8-16 bit stuff. I'd really like to get the 5+ too, play master system carts and cards, as well as game gear.

It plays GB, GBC, GBA, NES, SNES, and genesis as it is.

Problems people bring up are the NES port is apparently crappy, and many x in one carts have issues or don't work at all.

Thoughts?

Its 150-ish on amazon.

You mean the Retron 5? Some comments already on it here at AA and Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-Console-Famicom-Genesis-nintendo/dp/B00DZIX394/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1507811864&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=Retron%2B5&smid=A1MTMP1LZL4FAB&th=1#customerReviews

Saw one at a LameStop the other day and picked it up. The box that is, not purchase. lol Immediate thought was how light it is and set it back down. And thus concludes my review.

It's just an emulator box that you can't load roms onto. You might as well get a Rasperry Pi. At least with the Pi, you can load roms directly onto it without using actual carts. Flash carts such as the Power Pack and Everdrive don't work with it. Also, I haven't heard anyone who likes the controllers.

I think you'd best return your top five favorite consoles to the shelf after dealing with it. It may save space but they have enough problems depending on your tolerances to not be worth it. If you had to go with an emulation box, you can score the retrofreak for a few dollars more and it runs better and allows you to run ROMs straight off a SD card dumped to the system which the R5 is blocked from.

Also doesn't the RetroN 5 have a fair share of copyright violations in the emulation code? Not that you might bother about it, but it would worry me if I'm getting a product that both has a number of annoying problems with how it works, and at the same time is found to live on stolen properties. It is a lose-lose situation.

Instead of the RetroN 5, get the Retro Freak. It does all the same stuff, only better and easier. It's only slightly more expensive. If you want to wait, they're releasing a series of modular versions as well, but the original deluxe bundle is available for a good price already.

If you have a retron 5 (come to think of it, "Return 5" is a much better name) or a retro freak, can you use the GB port to dump Game Boy camera ROMs, and get pure digital pictures out of it? I've been looking for a way to get those pictures without doing analog conversion.

The argument over the R5 guts is a little debatable and checkered yes. The whining from the retroarch clowns is stock and standard for them, they're trying now to intimidate the Seedi people too despite following the GPL rules entirely. The R5 though one could make the case not for that but using the Sega core since the terms on it if I recall say it's not allowed and the SNES9X borrowed code is impossible to get permission for with so many names on it and some people just not capable of being found. It shouldn't matter in the end to anyone other than someone looking to make some whiny beef over source code as game players on the whole won't care. If there really were a case against Seedi or the R5 there are free lawyers under that EF group that could pick them to pieces over the usage which is brought up in the seedi thread on this board.

I like mine well enough, and do use it a lot. Paired with an 8bitdo controller (which is, in and of itself, a pain in the ass), it's good. In addition to just playing Genesis, SNES and NES games, I get a lot of value out of it playing Game Gear games (yes, I bought the adapter) and running translation patches for various stuff. Lag isn't too bad (I've seen a lot of contrary stuff about this... with my oldish Sumsung, it seems fine).

Saying that, if I had to replace it, I'd probably go for the Retro Freak, simply since it does more stuff (PC Engine support, rom support).

God damn auto correct. Well being an emulator would kill multi carts, not that I have many. I don't really need a ROM emulator, as I could just use my computer for that, it was using carts that interests me, and other cart devices can cut the number of actual systems, but not as much. I have a genesis/NES console and a SNES/NES already, a GameCube for game boys, but nothing for master system or game gear.

You don't need a multi-cart with the Retro Freak. It runs the ROMs for the dozen or so systems it supports without issue. You just need to supply the card.

If you have a hefty cart library it can be OK. Picture looks nice thanks to the HDMI and some of the built in options are convenient. If you play fast paced games though there is input lag which can be annoying. Still, I have read the Retro Freak is more of the same while executing the concept better, you are probably better off shelling out the money for that.

The input lag is a tv problem not a system one at least if you're using a wired controller. I know the R5 bluetooth isn't the best, plus it doesn't handle well nor is it all that comfortable either. I just plugged a SNES controller in it when I had one.

A fair comment some games look far worse than others on there, the most damning oddly enough are GBA games. The range depends on the output of the title more than anything. The worst offenders are the 3D games, not the polygonal but the generated stuff like the DOOM and clone FPS games. They're damn near 2600 looking blocky in some cases outright horrible and made worse when it will blow the game up to full or near full screen. YOu can retain a standard size and no scaling but it's less display area than a GB Player and still looks notably worse. Console games handle quite a bit better, but side by side I'd put the Nintendo HDMI systems or even the ATGames Sega HD system with the new guts in it above the R5.

I had a Retron 5 at first, and if all you want to do is play the major titles for the systems it supports, it should work fine. The wireless controller is garbage though. Invest in some real ones if you don't have them already.

I ran across a retrospective review that Metal Jesus and Kelsey did while looking for something else:

The adapter for playing Sega Game Gear and Master System games can be rather expensive.

I ended up getting a Retro Freak and selling off the Retron 5. The ability dump your carts onto an SD card is nice, and you can detach the system from the cartridge adapter and have something really small to take with you when visiting family. You will need an adapter to plug in NES games, but any will do... don't have to use theirs. Be sure to get the version with the controller attachment to use real controllers. I wish they sold that adapter separately.

Some things that both can fail on... support for reproduction carts is very spotty. Everdrive carts will not work, but those are redundant with the Retro Freak. Also, I guess the Retron 5 can have problems with home brew games. I assume the Retro Freak will have similar issues. For those, I'd keep an original console around.
