PiPlay and attracting new blood.

There are a lot of RetroGamers who play on multiple emulated platforms. When users have so many different choices to choose from, they sometimes 'check out' other systems in the menu that they never owned or used as a kid. When this happens it could give us an opportunity to find new blood for the TI too... but only IF our system is an available option.

Not everyone sticks to emulation. For instance, when I came back to the TI, is was largely due to Classic 99, but before I realized it, I was sucked in and 'Real Iron' was appearing piece by piece in the den.

I noticed the PiPlay has a few period systems like the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 among others, but no TI. If we could get the TI into more of these multi-platform systems, it could help our hobby.

EmulationStation for the Pi has a version of TI99sim as an experimental entry. I talk it up to the local geeks every chance I get.

It seems like there is a forgotten emulator when it comes to the TI-99 and it's Ed Swartz's v9t9 which i believe was the first PC-based TI emulator that wasn't a commercial product (PC99) back during the DOS days. Since it now runs in Java, it means that it SHOULD operate on any platform with enough power. Has anyone attempted using it on a Pi? Also, no idea how it would interface with the multi-emulator solutions that are being developed for the Pi but figured it was worth mentioning in case someone has a RPi3 with Java installed on it and can see how fast or slow it runs. Been meaning to get a RPi3 myself but life keeps getting in the way!

Not forgotten to me! Using V9T9 is what made me start Classic99 (cause I wanted something like it, but for the Amiga ;) ). I loved V9T9!

The ideal might be to re-package a Raspbian distro to boot to a TI emulator. If people can download an image to a SD card and turn a Raspberry Pi 0 into a TI machine.. well, you've got a captive audience :)

Now that is a totally EXCELLENT idea! Thats simple enough for ANYONE to get into and try the TI. If they later get the full fledged TI bug, they'll already 1/3 of a TIPI if the decide to go on to Real Iron.

Not sure if I miss the point here, but the RetroPi (and Raspbian) already do this, I built an image for RetroPi

completely installed (NES, SNES, N64, Atari2600, Commodore64, Philips VideoPac, etc.)

(and instructions to build the TI-99/SIM on ti99.atariage.com).

Original video:

Someone created an updated/easier version to install it:

RetroPi script for Ti-99/SIM -

Mess on RetroPie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8vS9a5nwWU

Raspbian and TI-99/SIM -

This is my channel with most TI-99/4a emulators:

On youtube search for TI99 VIDEOS

(most emulators I recorded already and also TI-99/SIM on a Sony PSP for example, with the idea of ParaDroyd and help of Mark Rousseau)

- Classic99 (TI-99/4, /4A)

- JS99er.net

- V9T9 (javascript)

- V9T9 6.0 (Dos or Dosbox)

- Mess, later MAME (emulates TI-99/4, /4a, /8, Geneve 9640)

- Win994a

- TI994w

- CADD PC99

- TI-99/SIM

- Linux with - TI-99/SIM
- Sony PSP - TI-99/SIM
- Droid 99 on Android phones

Dedicated emulation

- Munch Man on Android phone (from Italy) .apk

- FPGA TI-99/4a (Eric Piehl)

- and older ones listed here

http://www.99er.net/emul.shtml

- Mac (V9T9)

- Linux / Windows / Amiga (Tonny Brouwer)

- Tutti Emulator (Tomy Tutor) on a commodore 64

Currently also working on Odroid C2 (better CPU)

using Ubuntu for Raspberry (MATE 16.04 LTS)

to run TI-99/SIM

and MAME (Michael Zapf)

So before I try to get this running in RetroPie, I just have to ask - does this implementation support diskettes or is this meant just to play cartridges? I understand that TI-99/Sim run from a command line (i.e not launching through emulation station) can do this, but I'm not sure I see how you could play a game like Tunnels of Doom or Adventure without the diskette images that go along with them. Since there is no GUI, there appears to be no way of changing diskettes on the fly either such as in Classic99. I'm just debating whether it's worth the effort to run this through RetroPie or just stick with my Windows based emulators.
