Rob Mitchell Posted October 19, 2017 Share Posted October 19, 2017 (edited) I found an Asteroids cocktail at Goodwill this past Saturday. The sticker said that the monitor does not work. We plugged it in and it made Asteroids sounds! We payed more than I wanted to but it will look great in our downstairs bar area so why not. I got it back to our garage and started takimg it apart. I found a 1985 quarter inside! After some brief cleaning and inspection, I plugged it in and the monitor came on! The gameplay is happening but the vectors are distorted. In selftest mode, that is apparent. Play counter is 76k I disasssembled the control panels to clean all the grime off the buttons. I removed the springs from the buttons and then gave the white pieces a good soak and scrubbing. That made them look good but not good enough .. so yesterday I soaked them in the Oxy/peroxide/UV process in the sun for 6+ hours. Now they look perfectly new! See pics thus far. How much was it? I found my Kangaroo cab at a thrift store twenty years ago. I got it for $50 but they said the price was mismarked but let me have it anyway. JBerel Posted October 19, 2017 Share Posted October 19, 2017 The Scott's outdoor cleaner is fairly new on the market, but it's just the same old hydrogen peroxide and Oxiclean folks have been mixing up themselves. I think it's a stronger concentration than you typically find. Soak stuff in it or spray it down and leave in the sun for a while and it brightens up nice without corrosion or nasty chemicals. I hear that cloth treated with HP and left in the sun can turn yellow, but I've never seen that. The chemical reaction on plastics is different than cloth fibers anyway. A friend of mine found a full size upright Asteroids years ago and was able to get it working by replacing a fuse and cleaning all the contacts on the various internal hook-ups. It seems that those old Atari machines were built pretty solidly and to last. Sounds like it has found a good home. Asteroids may look basic but it's anything but and can last a little or a long time depending on skill and a little luck too. I hope to see you keep this updated as it cleans up and gets nicer. That whole returning the colors stuff, you're thinking retrobrite which is a pain in the ass to mix up. First he had to remove the broken key part. Then made two new keys based on that. All pieces put back in place and aligned. It works like new! When the key broke, the previous owner had to chisel open the cocktail and destroy the hinges. First he had to remove the broken key part. Then made two new keys based on that. All pieces put back in place and aligned. It works like new! It has a new door and lock. We scraped all the peeling paint and stickers under the glass and placed a new underlay which features all the labels and borders. (Arcadeshop.com). All circuits have been recapped. We will take it to the Southern a Fried Gameroom Expo here in Atlanta in June 2018! I have an Asteroids Deluxe cocktail that I think i paid $50 for a Long Time ago, But it Never has worked. The thing is I had the sound and it sounds like it's playing fine. I took the monitor to this guy who was supposed to be an expert, and he hooked it up to one of his machines, and he gave it back to me saying "It works fine"... Clearly the problem is in between the monitor and the game haha...but I haven't thought about it in a long time. At this point in time it's in my father's basement as I have no room and it's just in storage under some things... *sigh* PS I really want that 3 in 1 board as I have an Asteroids cabinet too!...(Maybe I need to do or get some repairs done, and pick one of those up in the future). I took a jewelers screwdriver and bent all the connector brushes to make better contact and cleaned everything. Now the edge connector grips the PCB well.
