Not trying to attack you on this subject, but....

"I think all bugs were corrected"

You are releasing these games thru your company and you don't know what you are releasing?

Yeah, complete in the box is nice and all, but it seems that you are more interested in releasing a CIB game than knowing if the game functions correctly. Is this 1983/84 all over again where it was about quantity and not quality.

I'm not working on manufacturing/testing anymore, hence why I don't always know what we're going to release

Heck, Toby informed me last saturday we are going to release Arkanoid

I'm not really sure why you said ''but it seems that you are more interested in releasing a CIB game than knowing if the game functions correctly.''

Again, I'm NOT part of beta testing anymore, Toby formed a team for this

Yeah, but it's ultimately your company and even if you aren't involved in the "process" anymore, your name is associated with the product. So maybe you should have answered ColecoDan's question with "I'm not 100% sure, I'll check and get back to you" instead of "I think", especially considering the purchase price on these new releases is $55 plus shipping.

Hence why I said: ''I think''

But yeah, I'll ask Toby to ColecoDan's answer the question himself

But it would just make sense that all bugs were corrected before releasing the games CIB ;)

I don't think Toby is stupid enough, eh?

As for me (in case you're wondering)

I'm ONLY working on creating new original games for various system , I'm not part of CollectorVision's publishing deals anymore

we've like 5-10 Colecovision games coming up (we're only publisher for those) and I don't even know most of them

No I got my answer, Stop buying Opcode protos because he is just going to release them later so it is basically just a total money grab and you get nothing special for helping him out with extra money for games.

This is exactly what came to my mind as well. As avid prototype buyer in the past, Dig Dug will be my last one it seems. Heck, I don't even care for the special prototype boxes anymore at the moment...

Geez. So much hostility in this thread towards people who don't HAVE to make games for our defunct system that hasn't seen a retail shelf in over 30 years. Maybe a better solution to get more games for these dead systems is to SUPPORT the homebrewers more instead of being angry with them?

Just a thought...

TPR... we DO support them and DO appreciate there efforts. However, and you know from your past experience working in the industry, there has to be accountability because people are spending their hard earned money to support the Homebrewers.

The issue of the very limited (5 each) Opcode Protos that sold for upwards of $500 being released widespread as CIB releases has to be a tough nut to swallow for those who purchased them and now see there value diminished to nothing... well, not nothing, maybe $25. Maybe the owners of these Opcode Protos should be sent a box, manual, cartridge label and reimbursement for what they overpaid for them years ago. An actual rom dump release of these games would be an easier pill to swallow because Opcode stated years ago that it was up to the individual purchasers of these protos if they wanted to do so as long as they weren't released to make a profit.

Glad that I never bought or even attempted to bid on them.

I think this just showcases the difference between how I look at things and how others do.

I more than happily spent the money to not only buy those prototypes but also then later spent the money to buy the cases that were made for them...

IMG_2249.JPG

At no point did I feel they were "overpriced" nor do I feel like I was owed anything else beyond the cart like a box, manual, etc, for free. I also have no issue at all with those games being re-released to the masses, and this is why...

I didn't buy those prototypes to have some weird "collectable" that me and a small handful of others was going to own. I bought those prototypes to HELP FUND the development of those games and others so that they could be made available to the masses!

As you stated from my past experience working on commercial games, I do know what it is like to publish games and I know the real-life costs and work that goes into it. I also know that these homebrewers are mostly working on these games in their spare time, and I also know that to develop everything that goes into a game, it takes a lot more than just the cost of each individual unit being sold once a homebrew is made available to the rest of the community.

So just like the "brotherhood" has helped fund other titles, and even myself helping out with CollectorVision securing that Pink Panther demo, I do not have any issue at all putting forth additional funds to Opcode, CollectorVision, Pixelboy, AtariAge, or whoever needs it, if it means that those funds will eventually go towards bringing more games, hardware or other products to the community as a whole.

tl:dr - I'm not in this hobby for me, I'm in it for everyone. And if my spending money on something that others may deem "diminished to nothing" ends up helping the community as a whole, then I feel it's money well spent!

I do also see where you're coming from, Jim and I'm not arguing with you nor do I find your stance on it to be wrong, I'm just trying to help others understand my stance. Honestly, I just want to help see this community thrive as much as possible.

Ok, let me clarity a couple of things:

When I was approached to handle the protos to CollectorVision, I discussed the matter for a while with Grazi and few close associates. At the first I was against it (and Grazi truth be told was always against it) since they were sold as limited editions. The argument that sold me was that the protos are still limited to 5 copies, nothing has changed. And secondly, the games got updates not found in the originals, from new fonts to improved colors.

In fact the initial feedback we got was positive, so we didnt see an issue with the general release.

That said, I see some people here got really upset, and I see their point. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and I will refrain of making limited editions available again to general release in the future, be it through Opcode Games or other publishers. Also, as a compensation, we will offer two new exclusive protos for the original owners of those 3 games, totally free. I hope that will be enough to compensate for your investimento on the original protos.

Eduardo, your offer, in my humble opinion, is both completely unnecessary but at the same time absolutely amazing. If any of the naysayers cannot see that you are in this for the community as a whole then I don't know what else you could do to convince them. Your words, generosity and actions speak volumes. I hope others can see this as well.

For those who own prototype copies of Juno First, Sparkie or Crazy Train. We hear you, lesson learned. An e-mail was sent with an offer for free prototypes in the future.

In case you own any of those games but didn't receive an email from us, please let me know. Protos may have changed hands, there is no way for us to keep track.

For the rest of the community, we apologize for what seems to have been a very bad idea. It was my decision, the buck stops here. My sincere apologies.

If you've a problem/issue with Opcode, CollectorVision, Team Pixelboy, why not simply contact them by PM?

This thread is not to resolve problem/issue

Well, as Ed stated above, it was CollectorVision who sticked their hands in the proto cookie jar and begged for permission to release them, so I find the discussion in here very much in place. Why do you guys not release some new material, instead of upsetting some people and just look after your purses? And, to make a constructive criticism, your boxes are way to flimsy by saving on cardboard costs - just compare them with Team Pixelboys' and you know the difference.

Please clarify: Will the now released ones have all updates from the protos and even the bugs sorted out?

All I can say is if you are not happy with our product, no one is forcing you to buy them. About the protos, we BOUGHT them from Opcode to make an official release so anyone can enjoy the games instead of only 5 persons.

Look at it the way you want, there was no bad intention and believed me, a lot of people are happy about it. These games are a lot of fun to play and they deserved an official release.

In the end this was my decision, I take responsibility for that. If it was indeed a bad idea, new free prototypes have been offered to make up for any investment loss. Let's not blame CollectorVision here.

As for the changes, I remember I made a few cosmetic to make the games look more like the arcade versions. For example, games now use their arcade fonts. Sony Hitbit logo was removed, etc. So the prototypes are still clearly different.

Now if I can kindly ask the complainers to STFU so the rest of us can enjoy CollectorVision's and Opcode's efforts for ColecoVision fans? Thank you very much.
