NIKON
Greetings... This has probably been asked before but how hard would it be to port a 2600 game to the 7800 platform?
Andromeda Stardust
There's a hidden 7800 game in every 2600 cart. Did you try simply plugging it in and hitting the power switch?!

+Allan
About the same as porting it to the Colecovision. Allan
+Gemintronic
The 2600 and 7800 are unique beasts - even more so in comparison to each other. Basically all you can reuse directly is the game design. The assets would need an overhaul. The coding would have to be completely re-written. Andromeda Stardust
In all seriousness, the 2600 is an odd beast. It has no display buffer like nearly every other game console, but instead updates the display register every scanline instead of once per frame. So many display tricks on the 2600 are impossible on other consoles including 7800. Only the CPU and audio portion of the TIA are shared between console modes. DCent
7800 is backwards compatible with 2600 but not 5200 games.
+Gemintronic
7800 is backwards compatible with 2600 but not 5200 games. Not an expert but I *think* when you insert a 2600 cart it effectively becomes a 2600. Meaning, you can't "cheat" and use 2600 code for logic and 7800 code to access the 7800 display hardware. So, backwards compatible without sneaky ways to get the best of both worlds. This is unlike the sega genesis where to a point you can try and access sega master system graphic modes, SN76489 (sound) and the z80.
Andromeda Stardust
Genesis "becomes" a Master System when an MS cart is inserted, does it not?
vidak
Genesis "becomes" a Master System when an MS cart is inserted, does it not? You need the "power base converter", but yeah, basically. The Genesis has both a 68k and Z80 in it, and the Master System's CPU was a Z80.
Osgeld
Also the genesis vide chip was a evolution of the sms video
