Would anyone be interested in this?

I was thinking of doing a project just for the fun of it a little later but was curious if there would be any want for it.

I'm thinking about taking this flashback here(ugly one that I'm sure everyone is aware of).

And putting the guts in here instead.

Just want to know what everyone's thoughts are first on doing this. Should I leave the poor Genesis 3s alone? I'm thinking one advantage would be you have the neat look of the Genesis 3. Another being the ability to play carts still and also be able to play built in games though. But disadvantage I know would be the poor emulation quality I keep hearing about with those so I would like any thoughts and would wonder if anyone would like to have something like that(maybe just to have something one of a kind) if so I will make some.

It will not directly drop in I would have to cut part of the board and reroute some connections because the slot is to close to back on the Genesis 3 for the Atgames board to fit in, and would require a few other modifications as well, nothing I can't handle however.

Worth it or not?

I decided that I'm just going to go ahead and do it.

Here is the Guinea Pig

I figured the 3 6 button controllers and the game made it an okay deal.

I'll post updates on the project.

Do you think I should keep the original Sega A/V connector or instead go with a generic option 3.5mm female jack in its place for the use of a 3.5mm male to 3 RCA male connector cord? I know the latter should be easier to find cords for but either is doable.

  • 1 month later...

Why would you fill the Genesis 3 with that mess?

Well, I'm about halfway done with the project now as is.

The board of the Model 3 had rust and corrosion in a lot of places so it was worth it anyway.

Pic below shows rust on the shield and if you zoom in over the pins you may be able to see the oxidation. I thought I took a picture of the board after I took the shield off but not on the camera.

The pic shows the Flashback board, along with part of the board I am reusing from the Model 3. If you look at what is left of the model 3 board you will see where it was cut between the power switch and the other part that has the AV port and power jack. This was because I thought I might just make wholes in the back and keep the RCA jacks and power jack in place and not worry about using the one from the Genesis Model 3. I changed my mind and decided to do it without cutting and drilling into the case. So if you plan on doing this same mod I wouldn't recommend making the same cut that I did there, and instead keep it all one piece to add stability to it. I should still be able to make it stable however because there is a standoff under that small section of board(I might have to tap the whole) that I can screw the board down to after drilling a whole in it, and the top part of that small board there is already a whole where it slides into a guide pin so it should be pretty sturdy when I'm done.

This pic is a closer up to the back showing the modification I had to do the Flashback board.

I am going to be reusing the AV port of the Genesis 3, the power and reset switches, and the controller ports. The power jack is a different size and I desoldered the one off of the Flashback and the Genesis 3 and put the Flashback jack in the spot on the old Geneses 3 board. I still have to run my controller wires, power and reset, and the av wires up to the Flashback board.

I thought I was going to run into a problem and have to either find a switch or relay for the power because the power switch used in the Flashback is a SPDT switch with one NO and one NC set of contacts, both of which are used. Well, the Genesis model 3 slide switch thankfully is as well, but it just uses the NO contacts, and the leg for NC just goes through the board and isn't soldered to anything, but either way I will be able to use it which works out perfect.

This will not have a power LED nor will it have the infrared detector as I decided I didn't want to mess with the case. The case has been thoroughly washed inside and out.

This unit will be for sale when completed.

Okay, in all seriousness I refuse to sell this POS. Like mentioned above the emulation quality is crap. My daughter for some odd reason wants it anyway but why I don't know. This would be a great mod if the emulation was spot on, but it is not. On the newer ones coming out which are supposed to have better emulation quality the case design is better anyway and is modeled after the actual Genesis, so really this mod is completely pointless but it was just something I thought would be fun but it was more of a pain. Glad my daughter likes it.

I cringed when I seen you were putting that POS in my fav. model genesis.

Yeah, I'm a little hard headed and when I'm dead set on doing something usually nothing gets in my way. I wish it had of this time. I've never owned a Sega Flashback before this and the only testing I did prior was turning it on to see it works. I should have at least gave a few games a try to see what all the fuss was about before doing the mod but I thought they were exaggerating a bit on the quality of the Atgames Sega. The games are playable, but pretty much unbearable at the same time. Atgames should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such an unfinished disaster such as this. How the company is still in business is beyond me.

I wish now instead I would have just swapped the card edge connectors and cleaned and repaired whatever may have needed repaired on the Genesis 3 board. I should have listened to the comments above for sure.

EDIT:

PS

Sorry to you guys for not listening.

One more question to see if anyone may know the answer to this.

I used an older Sega Flashback I got off Ebay. Are the newer ones out for sale now in Walmart, Dollar General, etc.(with the same case, not the one modeled after the original Genesis) also have the bad emulation/sound issues or was the issue fixed on those?

EDIT:

It is this one here I'm talking about, which includes MK1, 2 and 3 which seems to be a plus(if the emulation is fixed)
