Incognito v2?

I'd be happy with the first incognito re issued with the memory glitch fixed...

I keep missing the package deals and specials..or offerings completely... my absences always coincide with all the tasty good stuff....

Hi. What's this memory glitch? Oh no!

The cartridge control area at $D5xx is "write-thru" and hits the IORAM (memory reserved for use by the BIOS and PBI HDD driver) which shares the same address space. This means - for instance - that SpartaDOS X can take a hard disk partition off-line simply by writing to its own cartridge banking register. The partial fix was to simply move critical data out of this RAM region, but but it's hardly ideal and other cartridge types have the potential to cause troubles. Told Candle about it many months ago but I haven't heard from him since March or thereabouts, so presumably there's no interest in fixing it.

Fixing it would be awesome, in fact all the people who stumble on it are very interested in having it fixed....If there were a reason or some way to exploit the glitch I would suggest making it a toggle and allow both modes of operation if possible with modification(within the cpld? or other method?). The reason why I say that is in keeping with seeing what a thing can do approach to the Atari, great things can come from happy accidents or planned uses that sometimes get forgotten.

No, it just needs fixed. Nothing good can come out of this unintended behavior, believe me. The RAM is supposed to be completely invisible to the OS unless the PBI device is selected. That said, I never heard any complaint regarding adverse side-effects of the bug since the workaround was implemented.

Only been waiting eight months for my developer's prototype, but I'm starting to think it was never posted.

Well, that is going to be fun, when it turns out that the new version of incognito will not run your awesome alternate bios, and people start to complain about that.

Your alternative BIOS is considered as the first and only suitable BIOS, so in case someone involved in the project reads this: don't miss that boat please.

I second that  .

But do keep in mind that missing the boat isn't through any fault of Jon's ;) .

Since the incognito's are going for $200 - $250 on ebay, I might have to sell my spare as my motorcycle needs new tires soon...

You might regret that when the tires wear out once again, which they inevitably will. Whereas the Incognito's value will continue to increase, and is always usable by simply picking up a 2nd 800 to install it in.

But with that said, enjoy the motorcycle with it's fresh set of tires :) .

That's why I use the qualifier "Might" :) It would be very hard to part with...

CF cards last so much longer, I wish they'd consider not changing it,

I mean a CF-SD adapter costs less than 10 dollars and occupies the same space....

Unless some super great additions are being added just fix the known errors and start churning them out full steam!

Dead-on !!!

These shit-crap SD cards fall apart rather quickly, either on the read / write lock tab (whic just falls off) or the actual plastic tab that separate front-end connectors (they just brake).

Incognito DOES NOT need SD_card support, CF-cards are much sturdier, support a very long insert-extraction life-cycle and have all the assets to surpass SD cards capacity by a really large margin (not that it matters too much for 8bit SW, though).

Incognito meeds CARTDRIDGE-banking emulation support (to load any .car or rom image), more flash-rom space for holding entire SDX image + GUI, pin-header for enabling / disabling external add-ons and a pre-configured Cable-ribbon adapter to hook up legacy stuff to its PBI port, presto At least, that would be a start....

It's going to be hard, buddy....

Most of us that have back-up copies may not sell them either... precisely because of lack of supply!

We can't afford any (if possible) HW down-time / failures derived from owning only one (1) board. They become SO central to the operation of the system, and they enhance the host machine SO MUCH, that you really can't look back. Atari 8-bit computing at its very best, in my humble opinion.

Get ready to pay a real premium for these special boards.

Cheers!

I agree about the SD card support. I'd actually prefer to keep it CF.

I do have a CF to SD adapter in one of my incognito's so I can run my wifi SD. (I can copy files to/from the SD card wireless from my PC!)

all this works easily with a CF adapter I bought for $5.

I bought two incognito's when they came out... I'd buy another two if they are ever made again! Please do another run! We need one for every 800 (and 400, dammit!)
