Looks like a scam to me?

Someone in Israel is selling an 8-bit cartridge that says it plays 70 5200 games. Doesn't pass the smell test to me.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ATARI-800-XL-XE-XEGS-Multi-Game-cartridge-with-70-ATARI-5200-Games-carts-inside/132385309953?hash=item1ed2c78501:g:vlsAAOSwBT9ZtjoE

None of the photos show any kind of menu to select a game (alarm bells).

Anyone hear of such a thing? Me thinks its bogus.

Im sorry, but I must point out how utterly shameful this is.

You didnt even research the seller who is a respected member here, and a good guy.

You started this fake news story, and it caused Nir to pull the plug on the sale.

Shame on you.

coming into a marketplace competing against others unfairly is the problem. That's my opinion I don't care who likes it or not.

Anybody who has the technical skills to convert 70 5200 to A8 games themself, make the originally analog controlled games compatible with a digital stick, design their own menu system, and burn it onto their own 8bit board is certainly welcome to do so.

hi all

This was a project that started from a special request of an Atari friend that use to own a 5200 console...

to goal was to play all Atari 5200 games from one source on the 8bit machine

In the cartridge there are 70 Atari 5200 converted games, New conversion... and the rule was to be faithful to the original 5200 cart with the exception of using

a Digital joystick instead of the analog one.. (these are not the Gleen 5200 conversions Inside)..

i did not use a MAX FLASH cartridge but a special made PCB created for this task with switch 16k bank switching (not 8k)... and only few cart where made.

...

Holy cow. I want to buy it.

... the Ebay post was ended.. and the remaining cart will not be offered for sale.

Oh. Krap.

Silly you quoted something of mine which has nothing to do with what you posted and seeing how if you would have read my whole post I mentioned his case was different meaning basically I didn't give a crap about what he was selling because it was a cart and I couldn't care less. All I did was pretty much called out one guy for calling out one guy who called out another guy about something being illegal which was true, but I really don't care as it doesn't affect me, which I clearly said in my post the case was different from what I care about.

I thought political correctness is not relevant anymore in the countries with funny presidents...

are you kidding, the guy could cure cancer and they'd scream he killed the planet with overpopulation! The PC crowd turned the knob to 11 and went wild shredding everything in it's path....I think they are doing whip its to keep it cranked up... he is funny though... the pc pretend that they can't see he's being funny... or speaking hyperbolic because it suits their needs.. I laugh my *ss off at both sides It's like elementary grade school the kids doing the wrong things- point a one kid and say he did it he did it and the supposed adults blindly say oh yeah that Johny is the one even though Johny never did any of it..

Just for additional info

There was another 5200 cart made, but it has only 20 games in it. They look just like straight ports. But I might be wrong. I do not know how to check.

I got this off ebay about 2005.

I opened it up and it too is a Very High Quality Nir Dary multi cart from 2003.

I think his new original Atari cart looks better.

But I would have used CX5200-80 as the part number ;)

I long for a world where PC bullshit doesn't rule the day. Where a funny joke can be laughed at, not looked at like a nuclear bomb.

I really love people in the retro scene calling out other's technical violations of copyright on works that have been effectively abandoned.

That's not the point I was making. Sure, feel free to copy old software and pass it around, but to profit from it is a whole different matter.

Anyone could download the entire 8Bit software literary and start selling a DVDR on eBay with it all on. That in my mind is not on.

I truly see where you are coming from but in Nir's defence he has over the years provided PD DVD's crammed with stuff that barely covered the cost and time of making them let alone the postage, he's put a hell of a lot in to the Atari domain, these carts if you look at the pics a few posts above are designed by him and he's covering the cost and sending, its something he does as odd units from time to time and it could hardly be called an 'income'. Lets imagine Curt vendel put all his amassed data on a blu ray and sold it for just over cost, I'd imagine it would sell like hotcakes but I don't a single person would look at the copyright perspective, it would simply be him spreading the love to very appreciative people.

I really do understand the piracy side here but this falls in to the grey area where its actually a sought after little treat for the people by a guy not looking to make from it, it seems any money he gets then gets ploughed in to the next project.

Nir is one of the good guys and I also think your point is very valid and not a kill joy' post, trust me if someone unknown jumped on here selling dvd's of software for profit then I doubt many would be happy, I myself have passed on my collection and not made a penny from it ever, I've been lucky to have been offered other items as a counter gift but I've never asked for anything, I just like to see it flow around. If it was something big I'd probably ask for postage because of my financial situation but had I created something by design that cost I'd probably want to recoup the costs.

Personally I'd love to get hold of Nir's carts, when they get put up and one's or twos they go like a flash and are lovely creations...If its to be called piracy then I'd say its very positive piracy, just the same as me sending out my collection to the odd user.

Copyright in the US was originally 14 years of protection. Only greedy Lawyers and politicians keep extending it.

This is why you can't even sing Happy Birthday in public even though it is from 1912 and NOBODY who actually wrote the song ever got a dime. Someone just decided to copyright it in 1935 and sell the rights over and over. These guys make 20 million dollars a year off this song

The real scam here is the existing copyright laws.

Actually it looks like Disney is to blame for the current state of copyright law.

Wow, never knew that about Happy Birthday.....

As for the companies, it saddens me when a suit holds on to a character / game / whatever just because they think there's a chance a person will want to create a tribute to this item and they are going to be made to pay top dollar for the rights.

All that stifles creativity and motivation to use something that's been dead in the water for 40 years...Thankfully there are SOME companies who release these items for public usage and even product usage..

I think 5200 conversions are awesome, so that makes the cart very interesting. And indeed the guy is a respected AA member... he is on the list of good guys!

But on the other side... we all remember a certain fellow named KJ_MANN who -with his atlantis game group- started to sell games, who he actually did not own the copyright to.

We all were very upset about that. Probably because he was not on the list of good guys?

Can someone explain the difference?

I'm really not surprised that you absolve your own violations of the law while demonizing another.

The sale is for a unique piece of hardware, not the readily available games you've likely pirated multiple times yourself. As I said, he should sell the cart unloaded to silence the hypocrites.

Of course you could claim you didn't pirate anything back in the day, when you really were hurting publishers, but that would be a lie, now wouldn't it?

First of all, don't speak for us ALL. Secondly, please confirm you never pirated readily available to purchase software. I just want to make sure the person lobbing stones here is free from sin (or please explain why your pirate activities are wholesome, good forms of copyright theft).

Kyle22,

I am at a loss to understand what your comments have to do with what I actually posted. Your comments are not correct and I don't appreciate the character assassination. No fake news, let's leave that to CNN and MSNBC.

1) I did research this item and found nothing on AA, or Google. No info, reviews or anything that verified its existence in places you'd think (like AA). So that contributed to my reason for the query. To me, this is a hobby and I'm not exactly going to exhaust an inordinate amount of time on it.

2) Ndary is unknown to me. I have been on AA since 2010 and our paths just haven't managed to cross. He sounds like a great guy with many testimonials to his standing. My post and query simply asked if anyone had heard of this mystery device.

3) No fake news here. I stated clearly that it was my opinion, hence "Me thinks this is bogus" (emphasis on "me thinks"). I didn't say "it was" a scam, just asking for others opinion if they could verify if such an item was legit.

4) Ndary's decision to pull the item had zero to do with "my post". He "apparently" decided to pull the item because of another AA member's comment with respect to copyright law. Valid or not, that had nothing to do with me.

5) Everything I stated was factual. I'm sorry you attributed attributes to my statements that I did not say or imply. At the time of the post, I "thought" that this might not be legit and asked the AA community that is in the know, to confirm such a device.

It really pisses me off when some Captain Obvious comes in talking about copyright, which has been debated in thousands of posts already, and causes a cool project like this to be discontinued.

Exactly this.

The question I asked was: why were people so pissed of about KJMANN and his Atlantis Game Group and not about this?

I do not judge. I do not care at all. I am surprised by the fact that people who might have judged kjmann do not do this now, while in my eyes there is almost no difference.

Why can't I ask this question? Again: with this question I do not say anything wrong about anyone. It is just a question nothing more nothing less.

Maybe you should ask those specific people that demonstrated this hypocritical behavior. You can't generalize that we as a group act in this manner when we all have our own individual thoughts and opinions.

I agree Marius. Nir is a good guy, but there are a lot of topics about copied Ebay cartridges on AtariAge. Most of the statements (I don't say all!) were not positive ;-)

So I understand your opinion/question ;-)

When I look at the seller history I can see the cartridges were sold for quite a lot of money. I don't care if people make a profit, I sell a lot of stuff too. When I created "ANG Greatest Hits" compilation I asked all former publishers for their permission.

I am not trying to influence opinion here, I am just giving my own. I think Prowizard is a respected member of the AA community too (just like Nir) and he is entitled to give his own opinion or ask a question

if you search facebook forums, you will find posts with pictures and game play expectance of a guy that that got this cartridge...

you can select a game from a menu, using the joystick or keyboard...

It was not intended to break any copyright rules, or to make people here upset.. the Ebay post was ended.. and the remaining cart will not be offered for sale.

I'm the guy on FB. I have the Cart and it rocks.
